Sport injuries are a constant in physical activity and sport and represent, to a greater or lesser degree, an obstacle that most athletes have to face and which could have an impact on economical, occupational and educational aspects, as well as on physical and psychological health. Traditionally, sport injury was deemed the result of biomechanical forces exerted on the body and sustained during participation in sport activity, under which perspective the athlete is considered merely as the container of a set of parts that break down and must be repaired. In contrast, Sport Psychology has brought the individual into a central active role, both when sustaining and recovering from an injury. This paper promotes a psychological perspective on sport injury and reviews the main psychological models posed for both the pre-injury and the post-injury phases.

Alternatives to conventional fungicides for the control of citrus postharvest green and blue moulds

Purpose of review: This article reviews research based on the evaluation of postharvest control methods alternative to conventional chemical fungicides for the control of citrus green and blue moulds, caused by the pathogens Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum, respectively. Emphasis is given to advances developed during the last few years. Potential benefits, disadvantages and commercial feasibility of the application of these methods are discussed. Findings: Substantial progress has been accomplished in selecting and characterising new effective physical, chemical and biological control methods. However, their widespread commercial implementation relies, in general, on the integration of different treatments of the same or different nature in a multifaceted approach. For satisfactory penicillium decay control, this postharvest approach should be part of an integrated disease management (IDM) programme in which preharvest and harvest factors are also considered. Limitations: The lack of either curative or preventive activity, low persistence, high variability, inconsistency or excessive specificity are general limitations associated with the use of alternatives to synthetic fungicides as stand-alone treatments. Furthermore, the risk of adverse effects on fruit quality, technological problems for cost-effective application, or the availability of new conventional fungicides for traditional markets are additional reasons that may hinder the broad commercial use of such treatments. Directions for future research: As we learn more about the fundamental basis underlying host-pathogen interactions and how they are influenced by direct or indirect protective effects of existing or new single alternative treatments, more effective methods of applying and combining complementary approaches for additive or synergistic effects will emerge. Research should provide appropriate tools to tailor the application of these nonpolluting postharvest control systems and, further, the complete IDM strategy for each specific situation (ie, citrus species and cultivar, climatic and seasonal conditions, destination market, etc)

Evaluating food additives as antifungal agents against Monilinia fructicola in vitro and in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-lipid composite edible coatings for plums

Common food preservative agents were evaluated in in vitro tests for their antifungal activity against Monilinia fructicola, the most economically important pathogen causing postharvest disease of stone fruits. Radial mycelial growth was measured in Petri dishes of PDA amended with three different concentrations of the agents (0.01-0.2%, v/v) after 7. days of incubation at 25. °C. Thirteen out of fifteen agents tested completely inhibited the radial growth of the fungus at various concentrations. Among them, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate were the most effective while sodium acetate and sodium formate were the least effective. The effective agents and concentrations were tested as ingredients of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-lipid edible coatings against brown rot disease on plums previously inoculated with M. fructicola (curative activity). 'Friar' and 'Larry Ann' plums were inoculated with the pathogen, coated with stable edible coatings about 24. h later, and incubated at 20. °C and 90% RH. Disease incidence (%) and severity (lesion diameter) were determined after 4, 6, and 8. days of incubation and the 'area under the disease progress stairs' (AUDPS) was calculated. Coatings containing bicarbonates and parabens significantly reduced brown rot incidence in plums, but potassium sorbate, used at 1.0% in the coating formulation, was the most effective agent with a reduction rate of 28.6%. All the tested coatings reduced disease severity to some extent, but coatings containing 0.1% sodium methylparaben or sodium ethylparaben or 0.2% ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate were superior to the rest, with reduction rates of 45-50%. Overall, the results showed that most of the agents tested in this study had significant antimicrobial activity against M. fructicola and the application of selected antifungal edible coatings is a promising alternative for the control of postharvest brown rot in plums. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

Transcriptome analysis in blood cells from children reveals potential early biomarkers of metabolic alterations

OBJECTIVES: The development of effective strategies to prevent childhood obesity and its comorbidities requires new, reliable early biomarkers. Here, we aimed to identify in peripheral blood cells potential transcript-based biomarkers of unhealthy metabolic profile associated to overweight/obesity in children. METHODS: We performed a whole-genome microarray analysis in blood cells to identify genes differentially expressed between overweight and normal weight children to obtain novel transcript-based biomarkers predictive of metabolic complications. RESULTS: The most significant enriched pathway of differentially expressed genes was related to oxidative phosphorylation, for which most of genes were downregulated in overweight versus normal weight children. Other genes were involved in carbohydrate metabolism/glucose homoeostasis or in lipid metabolism (for example, TCF7L2, ADRB3, LIPE, GIPR), revealing plausible mechanisms according to existing biological knowledge. A set of differentially expressed genes was identified to discriminate in overweight children those with high or low triglyceride levels. CONCLUSIONS: Functional microarray analysis has revealed a set of potential blood-cell transcript-based biomarkers that may be a useful approach for early identification of children with higher predisposition to obesity-related metabolic alterations
