Introduction: The gradual entry of phytoterapeutic products has led to a rapid growth of this industry in Colombia. These types of products are commonly found for sale in health food stores and not in pharmacies due to legal requirements. An example of this, is the dispensing of vegetable materials with known adverse effects by personnel without specialized technical training. There are no current studies in Colombia about the handling and dispensing of phytoterapeutic products and the potential impact on public health. Methodology: An observational and descriptive cross-sectional study in dispensing was done in 2017 in all the health food stores that sell phytoterapeutic products in the municipality of Chiquinquirá-Boyacá. The research involved related requirements in accordance with Resolution 126 of 2009. Results: From the 16 health food stores included in this research 50% complied with all the variables related to legal documentation; while in the areas of storage and technical product reception 87.5% and 93.8% complied, respectively. The average age and experience of the 16 people responsible for dispensing the products was 38.69 years old and 8.8 years, and 75% of them had specific training in phytoterapeutic products. Dosing and contraindications from 71 phytoterapeutic products showed lack of compliance with 43.7% and 19.7%, respectively. Discussion: It is clear that there are no studies that verify compliance of health food stores with current legal regulations and the locative components. It is suggested to evaluate if the type of training in the management of phytoterapeutic products for the responsible personnel is adequate given the non- association between training and factors such as dosing, condition of sale, indications and contraindications

The following paper reflects on the symbolic and material boundaries of a contemporary public space based on a key space such a public toilet. The increasing debate over recent years about public toilets and trans population expresses a profound social process of changing political recognition of the subjects who not only demand a formal recognition but also a place in the world. The public restroom represents a borderline (public/private, man/woman) and thus, it emerges as symptomatic of a changing signi cant economy that structurally modifies the social organization. In that context, the following work tries to trace, from the production referring to the thematic the historical emergence of these spaces as well as to synthesize the state of the art around the discussions. Finally, we will try to address the current situation in Argentina by focusing on the experience of some trans subjects in Córdoba, taking into account that, as Lohana Berkins (2003) points out, it represents the most vulnerable sector of the so-called sexual minorities. During our practice and observations carried out in Colegio Técnico y Académico Celestin Freinet, we were able to identify the difficulties that the students encounter at the moment of presenting an oral production activity in front of the class, reducing the amount of speaking and the quality of it, making more difficult for the students and the teacher to share their ideas, increasing the frustration that the students might feel. This proposal emerged after the experience that one of the researchers had in a previous school in which some of the students from tenth grade felt overwhelmed by their emotions and were not able to complete their oral presentations in front of the class. The students let the teachers know that fear and shame were behind the way they felt and how the previously mentioned emotions and feelings prevented them from speaking in front of the class

Assessment of modeling sensitivity for nonlinear seismic analysis of highway bridges in Illinois

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) seismic provisions were updated in 2008. These provisions increased the design earthquake return period from 500 to 1000 years, eventually demanding special structural systems to counteract seismic forces and therefore increasing construction costs. The updates were based on the seismic practices in the western United States, which focus on bridge configurations that dissipate energy either by plastic deformation of the piers or by specially designed isolation devices placed between the superstructure and substructure. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has focused on this second isolation approach, however considering only conventional bearings, in order to formulate a cost-effective “quasi-isolation” concept targeted to the seismic hazard and typical bridge configurations in Illinois. An Earthquake Resisting System (ERS) based on quasi-isolation uses elastomeric bearings and is different from conventional seismic design by permitting bearing anchorages to fracture during a design earthquake. The ERS also depends on subsequent bearing deformation and sliding to accommodate seismic demands. IDOT has organized two research phases to analyze and develop the concept of an ERS based on quasi-isolation. Phase I performed an experimental investigation of the seismic response of bridge bearings and formulated structural models of typical bridges based on information obtained after testing these structural components. The structural models of this phase only considered regular bridges and a simplified abutment model. The structural performance of these models was assessed for various hazard levels by using a suite of synthetic ground motions based on representative seismic records of the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), a geographical region that encompasses several locations with high seismicity, including southern Illinois. Phase II continued the assessment process of the proposed ERS by formulating structural models that considered additional features such as skew angles and a detailed abutment model that included elements such as approach slabs and wingwalls. In this phase, a suite of synthetic ground motions specifically formulated for Cairo, Illinois, the geographical location with the highest seismic hazard of the state, was developed to analyze the structural performance of these models for design hazard levels. The principal objective of the present work is to evaluate modeling sensitivity between Phase I and Phase II models in order to determine to what extent the additional elements included in Phase II models affect overall structural response. In order to perform a consistent comparison, bridge configurations that can be found in both Phase I and Phase II parametric studies were selected. The comparison encompassed static pushover analyses and nonlinear dynamic analyses. Static pushover analyses were considered to determine similarities and/or differences of bridge response characteristics such as force distribution among substructures, sequence of limit state occurrences, fusing of sacrificial connections, and vulnerability of critical bridge components. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were considered to assess the seismic performance of Phase I and Phase II models based on a comparison of the number of occurrences of various limit states. The synthetic ground motions developed during Phase II were used for this comparison. This study found that additional Phase II elements, such as approach slabs, increased structural stiffness at abutments in the longitudinal direction of analysis, which allowed a redistribution of forces at this location. This redistribution precluded the concentration of forces in sacrificial connections and reduced superstructure displacements. In general, these conditions diminished the occurrence of fusing limit states at abutments and damaging limit states at intermediate substructures in comparison to Phase I models. Likewise, in the transverse direction of analysis, it was observed that additional elements, especially wingwalls, increased abutment stiffness that allowed a redistribution of forces that essentially reduced the concentration of demands on sacrificial connections at that location. Generally, the stiffness increase observed in the transverse direction was lower compared to the longitudinal direction. Finally, according to the results of nonlinear static analyses and nonlinear dynamic analyses, it was not possible to identify a marked difference in the occurrence of limit states between Phase I and Phase II models, especially regarding damaging limit states. Even though the formulation of Phase II models resemble more closely the real structural configuration of seat-type abutment bridges, the Phase I models require less computational resources to be analyzed. For this reason, it is possible to employ the more simplified Phase I models as a preliminary assessment tool, before using more complex formulations (as needed) for definitive structural analysis of seat-type abutment bridges

Future Scenarios And Trends Of Energy Demand In Colombia Using Long-Range Energy Alternative Planning

    Get PDF
The prospective of Colombia’s energy demand will be defined by economic, social, cultural and political phenomena. Modeling the factors that determine demand can be broadly divided into quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative phenomena, demography, energy efficiency and the direct consumption of fuels; qualitative effects are specific conditions, which are defined within each scenario as variables that will have effects on quantitative phenomena. In the baseline scenario, the transportation sector is expected to remain as the largest representative of Colombia’s energy demand, although its participation in the year 2050 will be reduced by approximately 7%. The residential sector will have a reduced growth supported by the law 1715 that will increase distributed generation and implement more efficient lighting systems. A scenario focused on energy diversification shows a reduction in demand since the short term. Transport sector is maintained with similar behaviors in all scenarios as the goods transport networks keep the same

Diet supplementation with omega-3 affect reproductive traits and milk yield of lactating dairy cows

Master of ScienceDepartment of Animal Sciences and IndustryVictor 'Gomez' LeonFatty acids can modulate important functions including metabolic pathways, health, and reproduction. Supplementation with fatty acids is a common and efficient practice to supply energy to the dairy cow. Several ingredients in dairy cattle diets, however, are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, with only a few ingredients supplying omega-3 fatty acids to the diet. This situation can create an imbalance that can impact milk production and reproduction because omega-6 fatty acids are related to pro-inflammatory responses, whereas omega-3 fatty acids are related to anti-inflammatory responses. In the first chapter of this thesis, a literature review of fatty acid classification, common sources of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, important roles of fatty acids in cattle, and effects of omega-3 supplementation in milk production and reproduction elaborate on the importance of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. In the second chapter, one experiment is described, which assessed effects of omega-3 supplementation on milk, oocyte quality, in vitro embryo quality, and in vivo conceptus development during the first 2 months of pregnancy in high milk-producing Holstein cows. In this experiment, 22 primiparous and 28 multiparous cows were enrolled weekly at 15 DIM and randomly assigned to either of two diets with different omega-6:omega3 (n6:n3) ratios: Control (6:1 n6:n3, n = 25) or Omega-3 (2:1 n6:n3, n = 25) and randomly allocated to 6 pens to consume the specific diet until approximately140 DIM. We showed that omega-3 supplementation might help improve milk production in multiparous cows and increase quality of milk by reducing somatic cell count and n6:n3 ratio. Furthermore, we showed that omega-3 supplementation can impact pregnancy per AI by enhancing oocyte quality, cleavage rate, corpus luteum function, and placentation
