This paper addresses the purported belief that Content and Language Integrat- ed Learning positively infuences students’ affective stance. It compares the motivation of CLIL and non-CLIL learners in seven state schools and one charter school in the province of Seville, both at Primary (n=194) and Compulsory Secondary Education (n=158) level. Affective aspects pertaining to motivation and anxiety are grouped around four clusters of factors: (i) desire to work and self-esteem (containing 10 items); (ii) anxiety in the face of exams (with a negative-inhibitory content and made up of 9 elements); (iii) lack of interest in studying (comprising 9 items); and (iv) realistic personal self-demand (consisting of 7 el- ements). The interaction of motivation and language attainment (considering use of English, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and reading) is also measured in order to confrm or refute prior fndings which tend to assign higher levels of motivation to CLIL strands. Keywords: CLIL, motivation and language attainment.

The Potential for Telehealth Consultations in Cardiology and Dermatology in Newfoundland and Labrador: A Synthesis of Research Evidence

    Get PDF
This report provides a synthesis of relevant research evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of telehealth technologies for specialist-patient consultations in the fields of cardiology and dermatology. The report is intended to inform and assist decision makers in the Labrador-Grenfell Regional Health Authority, the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Health and Community Services and the province’s other Regional Health Authorities by providing research evidence surrounding the effectiveness of telehealth consultation as an intervention for cardiology or dermatology patients. The findings of our synthesis are specifically interpreted for the context of Newfoundland and Labrador. Decision makers from other jurisdictions, particularly those with similar features in terms of potential clients, geography and resources, may also find the content helpful. The report includes explanations of research terms and technical language; as such, there is no need to have a specialized medical or health background to understand its content

[EN] The squinches is a very versatile construction type in the field of stonework. It is defined in its most elementary case as the covering of a triangular area with a conical surface, but, nevertheless, there are an infinite number of variants increasing the complexity of the layout and its execution. The studied case in this paper is the development of the layout of the "square conical vault" (actually, a cantilevered vault), in the treatise on stonework by Tomás Vicente Tosca, published in 1727. This author's work reflects the tradition of the local area (which comes mainly from the brilliant episode of the 15th century in Valencia), but it is also part of the pre-illustrated cultural trends of the time. The traces that appear are the result of combining ancient graphic habits with the development, to a certain extent, already scientific, of geometry and mathematics. All this leads, in the case of the "conical-square vault", to the development of a fundamentally descriptive trace, result of a mentality that is more analytical than practical, but that does not manage to emancipate itself from the old building tradition, as this study makes evident, and also the detected graphic habits. The research is also based on other examples of a documentary nature, such as the cantilevered domes of Vandelvira, Philibert de l'Orme, Gelabert, and on a built example; the squinch of the palace of the Generalitat de Valencia.Navarro Camallonga, P.; Navarro Esteve, PJ.

Sociological theory has attempted to grasp the complex phenomenon of human sociality by means of concepts such as the micro/macro distinction, the relation between action and structure, or the clash between the individualistic and the holistic stances. The aim of this paper is to show how those conceptual approaches get some clarification, and find a common underpinning, when we look into the evolutionary process that shaped the sociality of our species. In this respect, human sociality seems to hinge on a peculiar double duplicity. This provides the basis for the aforementioned conceptual dualities, which have prompted a substantial part of the theoretical gogitations of sociology from its beginings

In aeronautics, passenger safety and reliability of structures are essential aspects. For the specific case of helicopters, blades are subjected to impact solicitations. Modelling these phenomena is still difficult and experimental tests often replace the prediction. This work will be focused on the experimental and numerical study of an oblique impact on the skin of the blade. It is equivalent in a first approach to an impact on a sandwich panel made up with a foam core and a thin woven composite skin. First the mechanisms of damage in the skin for this kind of solicitation have been identified experimentally and a study of the influence of the materials on the impact response has been performed. Then a representative model of the damage kinetics adapted to the modelling of the complete structure has been developed. Thus, an F.E. explicit model has been developed. It relies on the development of a specific damageable element at the bundles scale. Finally, the numerical results obtained have been compared to the experimental results. The modelling allows the identification of the damage mechanism of the woven skin
