    Evaluating an EFL Textbook: To What Extent Does The 2013 Curriculum-Based Textbook Accomplish Pedagogical Aspects?

    According to Permendikbud number 71 year 2013 article 1, the government provides guide books for learning process, so pilot project schools for the 2013 curriculum must use the textbooks developed by the government. The 2013 curriculum-based English textbook for grade X is entitled “Bahasa Inggris” (BI hereafter). Since the use textbook is so significant and no textbook is completely accurate, this present study aims to verify: (1) how the 2013-based curriculum textbook “Bahasa Inggris” (BI hereafter) for grade X of senior high school accomplishes pedagogical aspects; (2) the students‟ responses toward BI textbook for grade X. It is classified as a qualitative study. BI textbook for grade X is the object of the study while SMA 1 Ponorogo and SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo are the setting of the study. Document analysis, personal interview, and focus group discussions are the data collection techniques and the instruments are a constructed criteria rubric to analyze the textbook and two lists of interview. After analysis of data, it is found that BI textbook has strengths in aspects of methodology, presentation, design, and learner‟s factors and weaknesses in aspects of content coverage and material completeness. Moreover, BI textbook is sufficiently beneficial and challenging for the students

    Dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris, berbicara merupakan ketrampilan yang paling penting untuk bisa berkomunikasi dengan para native speaker. Dengan memberikan kesempatan lebih untuk menyampaikan pendapat dan ide, para siswa diharapkan untuk bisa memotivasi diri untuk mampu berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Salah satu usaha yang bisa dilakukan oleh guru adalah menerapkan permainan di dalam kelas. Permainan merupakan salah satu tehnik yang dapat memotivasi siswa dalam proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Permainan Lost In A Jungle merupakan sebuah permainan simulasi yang dapat mengaktifkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Item bahasa yang diaplikasikan dalam permainan ini menggunakan ekspresi agreement dan disagreement. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subyek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII F di SMPN 1 Madiun. Instrumen dalam penelitian ini adalah tabel observasi dan rubrik ketrampilan berbicara. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah hasil observasi dan deskripsi nilai ketrampilan berbicara siswa yang dikumpulkan selama proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Setelah observasi dilakukan, peneliti mendeskripsikan hasil observasi dan nilai ketrampilan berbicara siswa.   Kata Kunci: Permainan Lost In A Jungle, ketrampilan berbicara, ekspresi agreement dan disagreement          Abstract Speaking is the most important skill because the aim of learning English is to be able communicate with speakers of that language. By giving more opportunities to speak, students are asked to encourage themselves to speak in English. One of the teacher’s efforts is implementing the game since games can motivate students in learning process. Lost In A Jungle game is a kind of simulation game that can activate students’ speaking ability. The language applied in this game uses the expressions of agreement and disagreement expressions. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subject is VIII-F class of SMPN 1 Madiun. The researcher uses observation checklist and students’ performance score from rubric of speaking proficiency as the instrument. The data are obtained from the observation during the implementation of Lost In A Jungle game and students’ performance score. After being observed, the researcher described two findings. the observation result from the implementation of Lost In A Jungle game that the teacher had done and the students’ speaking ability are adressed.   Keywords: Lost In A Jungle game, speaking, agreement and disagreement expressions

    Critical discourse analysis in teaching reading

    In Indonesian context, it is mostly found that reading material and its exercises examine of what have been explicitly discussed. Critical thinking is less introduced within reading texts and somehow it makes the students less understandable to know what is exactly meant by the author. However, when the students are able to think critically, they will also be able to connect between ideas and to solve the problems with logical reasons. From this reason, it is clearly seen that critical thinking should be introduced, for instance, through reading texts and its exercises. This article aims to present one idea that can be used to raise critical thinking by implementing a critical discourse analysis. Therefore, the relevant literature of teaching reading, CDA, the description of how the material is integrated with CDA and the teaching sequence will be described. It is expected that this article will have deeper insight and significant implication for some educational parties such as teachers and lecturers

Menjiplak hasil tulisan dan ide tanpa mencantumkan referensi kerap ditemukan dalam banyak kasus, tidak hanya di dalam karya ilmiah tetapi juga pada tugas-tugas perkuliahan. Seiring dengan berkembangnya teknologi melalui telepon pintar dan juga jaringan internet yang semakin mudah untuk mengakses informasi, membuat plagiat di lingkungan akademisi juga semakin meningkat. Dengan atau tanpa sadar mahasiswa menjiplak sebuah karya atau ide pemikiran, adalah tanggung jawab sebuah institusi perguruan tinggi untuk memperkenalkan pada mahasiswanya apa itu plagiat, jenis-jenis plagiat, akibat dari perilaku plagiat, bagaimana cara-cara untuk menghindari plagiat dan bagaimana penerapan sangsi untuk yang melakukan plagiat secara konsisten. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi persepsi dan perilaku mahasiswa terhadap plagiat, mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe plagiat, dan menganalisis solusi yang bisa dilakukan untuk mengurangi perilaku plagiat.Pendekatan kualitatif dan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan kuesioner, wawancara, observasi, dan analisis dokumen di aplikasikan dalam studi ini.Obyek dalam penelitian ini merupakan mahasiswa Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. Sampel populasi menggunakan purposive random sampling.

    An ESP Needs Analysis: Addressing the Needs of English for Informatics Engineering

    English for specific purposes (ESP) have different needs of English language use. These needs will be the fundamental indicators to develop appropriate ESP syllabus. In order to find those needs, a need analysis research is necessary to conduct. This qualitative study addresses the result of ESP needs analysis for 95 Informatics Engineering of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo students. Brief reviews of ESP, needs analysis, and current learners’ situation of ESP classroom for Informatics Engineering are described as theoretical frameworks. A needs analysis questionnaire is utilized as an approach to find specific needs and to evaluate the current class situation. The results address 10 areas of English language use for Informatics Engineering major

    WHAT UNIVERSITY-STUDENTS BELIEVE ABOUT PLAGIARISM

    Plagiarism among academicians has been a popular issue in Indonesia for the last five years. Some people argue that plagiarism occurs due to pressure of work to get certain level of academic degree. Another opinion claims that it is due to incapability of writing an academic paper. Plagiarism is definitely unacceptable and not tolerated in any context. Writing an academic paper is about producing a masterpiece. An academic writing should be given a high appreciation to boost positive motivation for academicians to write and publish their research papers. A lot of efforts have been conducted by institutions to avoid plagiarism, such as giving academic writing lectures and citation training, and checking papers using plagiarism checker tools. However, plagiarism still has its popularity among academicians including students and lecturers. For this reason, it is interested to study how those academicians perceive plagiarism. We specify the study by subjecting the research for university student. We investigate students’ behavior towards plagiarism. Thirty-five students of a private university in Ponorogo, Indonesia are purposively taken as sample of the study and they are interviewed to gain the data. The results of data analysis are discussed with related literatures to draw the conclusions.&nbsp
