Unveiling the inner morphology and gas kinematics of NGC 5135 with ALMA
The local Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5135, thanks to its almost face-on appearance,
a bulge overdensity of stars, the presence of a large-scale bar, an AGN and a
Supernova Remnant, is an excellent target to investigate the dynamics of
inflows, outflows, star formation and AGN feedback. Here we present a
reconstruction of the gas morphology and kinematics in the inner regions of
this galaxy, based on the analysis of Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA)
archival data. To our purpose, we combine the available 100 pc resolution
ALMA 1.3 and 0.45 mm observations of dust continuum emission, the spectroscopic
maps of two transitions of the CO molecule (tracer of molecular mass in star
forming and nuclear regions), and of the CS molecule (tracer of the dense star
forming regions) with the outcome of the SED decomposition. By applying the
BAROLO software (3D-Based Analysis of Rotating Object via Line
Observations), we have been able to fit the galaxy rotation curves
reconstructing a 3D tilted-ring model of the disk. Most of the observed
emitting features are described by our kinematic model. We also attempt an
interpretation for the emission in few regions that the axisymmetric model
fails to reproduce. The most relevant of these is a region at the northern edge
of the inner bar, where multiple velocity components overlap, as a possible
consequence of the expansion of a super-bubble.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS after moderate revision
Software Measures for Business Processes
Designing a business process, which is executed by a Workflow Management System, recalls the activity of writing software source code, which is executed by a computer. Different business processes may have different qualities, e.g., size, structural complexity, some of which can be measured based on the formal descriptions of the business processes. This paper defines measures for quantifying business process qualities by drawing on concepts that have been used for defining measures for software code.
Specifically, the measures we propose and apply to business processes are related to attributes of activities, control-flow, data-flow, and resources. This allows the business process designer to have a comprehensive evaluation of business processes according to several different attributes
Expansion of cyanobacteria outbreaks in the Alpine region: first report of an intense Microcystis bloom in Lake Serraia
Lake Serraia is a small eutrophic dimictic lake located in the town of Baselga di Pinè, in the Province of Trento. The lake has an average depth of 7 m and a maximum depth of 18 m and is mainly used for recreational activities. During the last decade, summer blooms of non-toxigenic populations of Dolichospermum spp. were documented over the entire lake. Conversely, at the end of August 2023, an intense toxigenic bloom of Microcystis aeruginosa developed over several weeks, resulting in a bathing ban by the local authorities. Besides the usual monitoring for the control of bathing waters, a few opportunistic samples were collected for microscopical examinations, toxins analyses using LC-MS techniques, and strain isolation and cultivation. In the areas where the surface scums developed, the MC-LR and MC-RR congeners of microcystins showed concentrations of 200 μg L-1 and 42 μg L-1, respectively. The bloom episodes documented in Lake Serraia are part of a more general increasing trend of cyanobacterial outbreaks actively documented in the southern Alpine region. Besides persisting high trophic status, as in Lake Serraia, the causes were also connected to the general increasing temperature trends at the global and local levels
AGN counts at 15um. XMM observations of the ELAIS-S1-5 sample
Context: The counts of galaxies and AGN in the mid infra-red (MIR) bands are
important instruments for studying their cosmological evolution. However, the
classic spectral line ratios techniques can become misleading when trying to
properly separate AGN from starbursts or even from apparently normal galaxies.
Aims: We use X-ray band observations to discriminate AGN activity in
previously classified MIR-selected starburst galaxies and to derive updated
AGN1 and (Compton thin) AGN2 counts at 15 um.
Methods: XMM observations of the ELAIS-S1 15um sample down to flux limits
~2x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (2-10 keV band) were used. We classified as AGN all
those MIR sources with a unabsorbed 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity higher that
~10^42 erg/s.
Results: We find that at least about 13(+/-6) per cent of the previously
classified starburst galaxies harbor an AGN. According to these figures, we
provide an updated estimate of the counts of AGN1 and (Compton thin) AGN2 at 15
um. It turns out that at least 24% of the extragalactic sources brighter than
0.6 my at 15 um are AGN (~13% contribution to the extragalactic background
produced at fluxes brighter than 0.6 mJy).Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
