Dynamics for a 2-vertex Quantum Gravity Model
We use the recently introduced U(N) framework for loop quantum gravity to
study the dynamics of spin network states on the simplest class of graphs: two
vertices linked with an arbitrary number N of edges. Such graphs represent two
regions, in and out, separated by a boundary surface. We study the algebraic
structure of the Hilbert space of spin networks from the U(N) perspective. In
particular, we describe the algebra of operators acting on that space and
discuss their relation to the standard holonomy operator of loop quantum
gravity. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to make the restriction to
the isotropic/homogeneous sector of the model by imposing the invariance under
a global U(N) symmetry. We then propose a U(N) invariant Hamiltonian operator
and study the induced dynamics. Finally, we explore the analogies between this
model and loop quantum cosmology and sketch some possible generalizations of

Marco Polo: A near Earth object sample return mission
From Introduction:
MARCO POLO is a joint European-Japanese sample return mission to a Near-Earth Object. In late 2007 this mission was selected by ESA, in the framework of COSMIC VISION 2015-2025, for an assessment scheduled to last until mid 2009.
This Euro-Asian mission will go to a primitive Near-Earth Object (NEO), such as a C or D type asteroid. The spacecraft will rendezvous with the object, and over an extended period scientifically characterize it at multiple scales and bring samples back to Earth for detailed scientific investigation
Revisiting the Simplicity Constraints and Coherent Intertwiners
In the context of loop quantum gravity and spinfoam models, the simplicity
constraints are essential in that they allow to write general relativity as a
constrained topological BF theory. In this work, we apply the recently
developed U(N) framework for SU(2) intertwiners to the issue of imposing the
simplicity constraints to spin network states. More particularly, we focus on
solving them on individual intertwiners in the 4d Euclidean theory. We review
the standard way of solving the simplicity constraints using coherent
intertwiners and we explain how these fit within the U(N) framework. Then we
show how these constraints can be written as a closed u(N) algebra and we
propose a set of U(N) coherent states that solves all the simplicity
constraints weakly for an arbitrary Immirzi parameter.Comment: 28 page
On chemiluminescent emission from an infiltrated chiral sculptured thin film
The theory describing the far-field emission from a dipole source embedded
inside a chiral sculptured thin film (CSTF), based on a spectral Green function
formalism, was further developed to allow for infiltration of the void regions
of the CSTF by a fluid. In doing so, the extended Bruggeman homogenization
formalism--which accommodates constituent particles that are small compared to
wavelength but not vanishingly small--was used to estimate the relative
permittivity parameters of the infiltrated CSTF. For a numerical example, we
found that left circularly polarized (LCP) light was preferentially emitted
through one face of the CSTF while right circularly polarized (RCP) light was
preferentially emitted through the opposite face, at wavelengths within the
Bragg regime. The centre wavelength for the preferential emission of LCP/RCP
light was red shifted as the refractive index of the infiltrating fluid
increased from unity, and this red shift was accentuated when the size of the
constituent particles in our homogenization model was increased. Also, the
bandwidth of the preferential LCP/RCP emission regime decreased as the
refractive index of the infiltrating fluid increased from unity
Entropy calculation for a toy black hole
In this note we carry out the counting of states for a black hole in loop
quantum gravity, however assuming an equidistant area spectrum. We find that
this toy-model is exactly solvable, and we show that its behavior is very
similar to that of the correct model. Thus this toy-model can be used as a nice

An extension of SPARQL for expressing qualitative preferences
In this paper we present SPREFQL, an extension of the SPARQL language that
allows appending a PREFER clause that expresses "soft" preferences over the
query results obtained by the main body of the query. The extension does not
add expressivity and any SPREFQL query can be transformed to an equivalent
standard SPARQL query. However, clearly separating preferences from the "hard"
patterns and filters in the WHERE clause gives queries where the intention of
the client is more cleanly expressed, an advantage for both human readability
and machine optimization. In the paper we formally define the syntax and the
semantics of the extension and we also provide empirical evidence that
optimizations specific to SPREFQL improve run-time efficiency by comparison to

The song of the dunes as a self-synchronized instrument
Since Marco Polo (1) it has been known that some sand dunes have the peculiar
ability of emitting a loud sound with a well defined frequency, sometimes for
several minutes. The origin of this sustained sound has remained mysterious,
partly because of its rarity in nature (2). It has been recognized that the
sound is not due to the air flow around the dunes but to the motion of an
avalanche (3), and not to an acoustic excitation of the grains but to their
relative motion (4-7). By comparing several singing dunes and two controlled
experiments, one in the laboratory and one in the field, we here demonstrate
that the frequency of the sound is the frequency of the relative motion of the
sand grains. The sound is produced because some moving grains synchronize their
motions. The existence of a velocity threshold in both experiments further
shows that this synchronization comes from an acoustic resonance within the
flowing layer: if the layer is large enough it creates a resonance cavity in

Genetic modifiers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy
OBJECTIVE:
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major complication and leading cause of death in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DCM onset is variable, suggesting modifier effects of genetic or environmental factors. We aimed to determine if polymorphisms previously associated with age at loss of independent ambulation (LoA) in DMD (rs28357094 in the SPP1 promoter, rs10880 and the VTTT/IAAM haplotype in LTBP4) also modify DCM onset.
METHODS:
A multicentric cohort of 178 DMD patients was genotyped by TaqMan assays. We performed a time-to-event analysis of DCM onset, with age as time variable, and finding of left ventricular ejection fraction 70 mL/m2 as event (confirmed by a previous normal exam < 12 months prior); DCM-free patients were censored at the age of last echocardiographic follow-up.
RESULTS:
Patients were followed up to an average age of 15.9 \ub1 6.7 years. Seventy-one/178 patients developed DCM, and median age at onset was 20.0 years. Glucocorticoid corticosteroid treatment (n = 88 untreated; n = 75 treated; n = 15 unknown) did not have a significant independent effect on DCM onset. Cardiological medications were not administered before DCM onset in this population. We observed trends towards a protective effect of the dominant G allele at SPP1 rs28357094 and recessive T allele at LTBP4 rs10880, which was statistically significant in steroid-treated patients for LTBP4 rs10880 (< 50% T/T patients developing DCM during follow-up [n = 13]; median DCM onset 17.6 years for C/C-C/T, log-rank p = 0.027).
CONCLUSIONS:
We report a putative protective effect of DMD genetic modifiers on the development of cardiac complications, that might aid in risk stratification if confirmed in independent cohorts
