In order to accomplish the task of supporting and ‘fostering’ human self-understanding, philosophy obviously has to deal with human psychology. The normative dimension of its results, though, depends on whether philosophy regards human psychology in an essentialist or in a historical way, that is, it depends on the anthropological assumptions constituting the background of its inquiry. Through his project of a ‘natural history of morals’, Nietzsche helps clarifying some issues of this framework connecting human ‘nature’, i.e. human physiology and psychology, to morality, norms, and institutions. Exploring these connections through the case of passions (and especially of the amour passion), this paper discusses the anthropological account informing Nietzsche’s project of a ‘natural history of morality’. By doing so, it also aims at clarifying the importance of becoming aware of the (often implicit) anthropological assumptions lying in every philosophical project which seeks a transformation of human self-understanding

By means of the project of a «natural history of morals», we can understand some issues of Nietzsche’s framework, where human «nature», i.e. human physiology and psychology, is linked to morality, norms, and institutions. Exploring these connections through the example of passions (and especially of love), this paper discusses the anthropological account that serves as a basis for the mentioned «natural history of morality».By doing so, we intend to clarify the importance of becoming aware of the (often implicit) anthropological assumptions lying behind every philosophical project which seeks a transformation of human selfunderstandingA través del proyecto de una «historia natural de la moral», podemos entender algunos puntos del  planteamiento de Nietzsche, donde la «naturaleza» humana, es decir, la fisiología y la psicología humana, está conectada con la moralidad, con las normas e instituciones.

What does it mean to examine erotic love and intimacy from a sociological point of view? Does this endeavour entail adefinition of love, and, if so, is such a definition possible from a sociological perspective? This paper discusses the epistemologicalchallenges implied by the task of constructing love as the object of sociological inquiry. We will start by givinga definition of the task itself and by detailing the peculiarities of a sociological inquiry on love. We will point out whyit is imperative for such an inquiry to remain open to the historicity of love as an emotion and as a form of interaction. Finally we will explore love as the object of a sociological investigation in order to spell out what becomes visible to thesociological eye once the correct epistemological precautions are taken.¿Qué significa examinar el amor erótico y la intimidad desde un punto de vista sociológico?

What is the object of a sociological or philosophical understanding of “love”? Should the aim of an inquiry on “love” be that of providing a general definition of “love”, or that of creating an approach which accommodates historicity, locality, and diversity of meaning-producing practices? This paper presents the epistemological premises and the operational steps of an original approach to love, the goal thereof is to understand personal and relational love experiences within the framework of historical change and cultural diversity, and to allow for rigorous empirical application. I discuss the theoretical foundations of this approach, that is the concept of “integrated semantics”, the latter’s empirical emergence form a pilot case-study, and its implementation in an ongoing research project focusing on the Canadian general population. What is the object of a sociological or philosophical understanding of “love”?
