    Direct Torque and Predictive Control Strategies in Nine-phase Electric Drives Using Virtual Voltage Vectors

    One of the main distinctive features of multiphase machines is the appearance of new degrees of freedom ( - voltages/currents) that do not exist in their three-phase counterparts. As a direct consequence, control approaches that apply a single switching state during the sampling period cannot achieve zero average - voltage production. In direct torque control (DTC) this implies that - currents are not regulated, whereas in finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) an enhanced - current regulation is feasible only at the expense of disturbing the flux/torque production. Aiming to avoid these shortcomings, this work makes use of the concept of synthetic/virtual voltage vectors (VVs) to nullify/limit the - voltage production in order to improve the current regulation in the secondary planes. Two strategies using two and four virtual voltage vectors (2-VV and 4-VV, respectively) are proposed and compared with the standard case that applies a single switching state. Since standard MPC has the capability to indirectly regulate - currents, the improvements with the inclusion of VVs are expected to be more significant in DTC strategies. Experimental results validate the proposed VVs and confirm the expectations through a detailed performance comparison of standard, 2-VV and 4-VV approaches for DTC and MPC strategies

    Natural and human-induced Holocene paleoenvironmental changes on the Guadiana shelf (northern Gulf of Cadiz)

    Three contrasting sedimentary environments on the continental shelf off the Guadiana River (northern Gulf of Cadiz) were integrated in a chronological framework and analysed in terms of sedimentology and benthic foraminiferal assemblages to understand the Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution. The analysed environments differ in terms of their depositional regimes and benthic foraminiferal assemblages. However, a dominant fluvial origin of the sand fraction was observed in all three environments. Holocene sedimentary processes were mainly controlled by natural (sea level changes and climate variations) and human-induced processes (e.g. deforestation, agriculture) along four evolutionary stages. The three older stages were mainly influenced by natural processes, such as sea level variations and fluvial inputs, whereas the most recent stage reflects a combination of climatic- and human-induced processes. A deepening of sedimentary environments related to a period of rapid sea level rise, strongly influenced by river discharges occurred from c. 11,500 to c. 10,000 cal. yr BP. A reduction in sediment export to the shelf, as a result of the continuous and rapid sea level rise and enhanced estuary infilling reflects the second stage, from c. 10,000 to c. 5000 cal. yr BP. The beginning of the third stage, from c. 5000 to c. 1500–1000 cal. yr BP, is marked by a sea-level slowdown and the relatively stable climate and environmental conditions. The fourth stage, from c. 1500–1000 cal. yr BP to Recent times, reflects the intensification of human-induced processes and climatic variability in the Guadiana River basin. This stage also reflects modern depositional conditions, with the formation of a proximal prodeltaic wedge and a distal muddy body

    Star Formation Rate Indicators in Wide-Field Infrared Survey Preliminary Release

    With the goal of investigating the degree to which theMIR luminosity in theWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) traces the SFR, we analyze 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m data in a sample of {\guillemotright} 140,000 star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions covering a wide range in metallicity 7.66 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.46, with redshift z < 0.4. These star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions are selected by matching the WISE Preliminary Release Catalog with the star-forming galaxy Catalog in SDSS DR8 provided by JHU/MPA 1.We study the relationship between the luminosity at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m from WISE and H\alpha luminosity in SDSS DR8. From these comparisons, we derive reference SFR indicators for use in our analysis. Linear correlations between SFR and the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m luminosity are found, and calibrations of SFRs based on L(3.4), L(4.6), L(12) and L(22) are proposed. The calibrations hold for galaxies with verified spectral observations. The dispersion in the relation between 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m luminosity and SFR relates to the galaxy's properties, such as 4000 {\deg}A break and galaxy color.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in 4d string models

    We study the realization of non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in 4d field theory and string theory compactifications. The underlying structure generalizes the Abelian case, and follows from the interplay between gaugings of non-Abelian isometries of the scalar manifold and field identifications making axion-like fields periodic. We present several classes of string constructions realizing non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries. In particular, compactifications with torsion homology classes, where non-Abelianity arises microscopically from the Hanany-Witten effect, or compactifications with non-Abelian discrete isometry groups, like twisted tori. We finally focus on the more interesting case of magnetized branes in toroidal compactifications and quotients thereof (and their heterotic and intersecting duals), in which the non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries imply powerful selection rules for Yukawa couplings of charged matter fields. In particular, in MSSM-like models they correspond to discrete flavour symmetries constraining the quark and lepton mass matrices, as we show in specific examples.Comment: 58 pages; minor typos corrected and references adde

    The Complete Star Formation History of the Universe

    The determination of the star-formation history of the Universe is a key goal of modern cosmology, as it is crucial to our understanding of how structure in the Universe forms and evolves. A picture has built up over recent years, piece-by-piece, by observing young stars in distant galaxies at different times in the past. These studies indicated that the stellar birthrate peaked some 8 billion years ago, and then declined by a factor of around ten to its present value. Here we report on a new study which obtains the complete star formation history by analysing the fossil record of the stellar populations of 96545 nearby galaxies. Broadly, our results support those derived from high-redshift galaxies elsewhere in the Universe. We find, however, that the peak of star formation was more recent - around 5 billion years ago. Our study also shows that the bigger the stellar mass of the galaxy, the earlier the stars were formed.     Benign cystic mesothelioma of the appendix presenting in a woman: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Benign cystic mesothelioma or peritoneal inclusion cysts are rare benign abdominal tumors usually occurring in females of reproductive age. These cysts present as abdominopelvic pain or masses but are often found on imaging or incidentally at surgery. They are commonly associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or ovarian cysts. We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of a benign cystic mesothelioma complicating a presentation of acute appendicitis.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>A 19-year-old Irish Caucasian woman presented with abdominal pain. Imaging suggested appendicitis with abscess formation. She was treated with antibiotics and scheduled for interval appendicectomy. At laparoscopy, an unusual cystic mass was found arising from the appendix. Histology revealed benign cystic mesothelioma.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of a benign cystic mesothelioma arising from the appendix and complicating a presentation of acute appendicitis. This is a benign pathology, but recurrences are not uncommon. Benign cystic mesothelioma should be included in the differential when investigating pelvic masses or abscesses associated with either appendicitis or pelvic inflammatory disease in women.</p

    Abnormal skeletal muscle blood flow, contractile mechanics and fibre morphology in a rat model of obese‐HFpEF

    Peripheral skeletal muscle and vascular alterations induced by heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remain poorly identified, with limited therapeutic targets. This study used a cardiometabolic obese‐HFpEF rat model to comprehensively phenotype skeletal muscle mechanics, blood flow, microvasculature and fibre atrophy. Lean (n = 8) and obese‐HFpEF (n = 8) ZSF1 rats were compared. Skeletal muscles (soleus and diaphragm) were assessed for in vitro contractility (isometric and isotonic properties) alongside indices of fibre‐type cross‐sectional area, myosin isoform, and capillarity, and estimated muscle PO2. In situ extensor digitorum longus (EDL) contractility and femoral blood flow were assessed. HFpEF soleus demonstrated lower absolute maximal force by 22%, fibre atrophy by 24%, a fibre‐type shift from I to IIa, and a 17% lower capillary‐to‐fibre ratio despite increased capillary density (all P 0.05). Soleus isotonic properties (shortening velocity and power) were impaired by up to 17 and 22%, respectively (P < 0.05), while the magnitude of the exercise hyperaemia was attenuated by 73% (P = 0.012) in line with higher muscle fatigue by 26% (P = 0.079). Diaphragm alterations (P < 0.05) included Type IIx fibre atrophy despite Type I/IIa fibre hypertrophy, with increased indices of capillarity alongside preserved contractile properties during isometric, isotonic, and cyclical contractions. In conclusion, obese‐HFpEF rats demonstrated blunted skeletal muscle blood flow during contractions in parallel to microvascular structural remodelling, fibre atrophy, and isotonic contractile dysfunction in the locomotor muscles. In contrast, diaphragm phenotype remained well preserved. This study identifies numerous muscle‐specific impairments that could exacerbate exercise intolerance in obese‐HFpEF

    Deep sternal wound infections: Evidence for prevention, treatment, and reconstructive surgery

    Median sternotomy is the most popular approach in cardiac surgery. Post-sternotomy wound complications are rare, but the occurrence of a deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a catastrophic event associated with higher morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, and increased costs. A literature review was performed by searching PubMed from January 1996 to August 2017 according to the guidelines in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The following keywords were used in various combinations: DSWI, post-sternotomy complication, and sternal reconstruction. Thirty-nine papers were included in our qualitative analysis, in which each aspect of the DSWI-related care process was analyzed and compared to the actual standard of care. Plastic surgeons are often involved too late in such clinical scenarios, when previous empirical treatments have failed and a definitive reconstruction is needed. The aim of this comprehensive review was to create an up-to-date operative flowchart to prevent and properly treat sternal wound infection complications after median sternotomy
