    Patterns of Parental Reactions to Their Children’s Negative Emotions: A Cluster Analysis with a Clinical Sample

    Parents' emotion socialization practices are an important source of influence in the development of children's emotional competencies This study examined parental reactions to child negative emotions in a clinical sample using a cluster analysis approach and explored the associations between clusters of parents' reactions and children's and parents' adjustment. The sample comprised 80 parents of Portuguese children (aged 3-13 years) attending a child and adolescent psychiatry unit. Measures to assess parental reactions to children's negative emotions, parents' psychopathological symptoms, parents' emotion dysregulation, and children's adjustment were administered to parents. Model-based cluster analysis resulted in three clusters: low unsupportive, high supportive, and inconsistent reactions clusters. These clusters differed significantly in terms of parents' psychopathological symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and children's adjustment. A pattern characterized by high supportive reactions to the child's emotions was associated with higher levels of children's adjustment. On the other hand, an inconsistent reactions pattern was associated with the worst indicators of children's adjustment and parental emotion dysregulation. These results suggest the importance of supporting parents of children with emotional and behavioural problems so that they can be more responsive to their children's emotional manifestations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Clinical signs of pneumonia in children: association with and prediction of diagnosis by fuzzy sets theory

    The present study compares the performance of stochastic and fuzzy models for the analysis of the relationship between clinical signs and diagnosis. Data obtained for 153 children concerning diagnosis (pneumonia, other non-pneumonia diseases, absence of disease) and seven clinical signs were divided into two samples, one for analysis and other for validation. The former was used to derive relations by multi-discriminant analysis (MDA) and by fuzzy max-min compositions (fuzzy), and the latter was used to assess the predictions drawn from each type of relation. MDA and fuzzy were closely similar in terms of prediction, with correct allocation of 75.7 to 78.3% of patients in the validation sample, and displaying only a single instance of disagreement: a patient with low level of toxemia was mistaken as not diseased by MDA and correctly taken as somehow ill by fuzzy. Concerning relations, each method provided different information, each revealing different aspects of the relations between clinical signs and diagnoses. Both methods agreed on pointing X-ray, dyspnea, and auscultation as better related with pneumonia, but only fuzzy was able to detect relations of heart rate, body temperature, toxemia and respiratory rate with pneumonia. Moreover, only fuzzy was able to detect a relationship between heart rate and absence of disease, which allowed the detection of six malnourished children whose diagnoses as healthy are, indeed, disputable. The conclusion is that even though fuzzy sets theory might not improve prediction, it certainly does enhance clinical knowledge since it detects relationships not visible to stochastic models.The present study compares the performance of stochastic and fuzzy models for the analysis of the relationship between clinical signs and diagnosis.     A Chapada do Araripe é um berçário riquíssimo em vegetação, que carece de um estudo mais aprofundado sobre as várias espécies existentes. Sabemos que as plantas de um modo geral têm grande importância econômica para a região do Cariri, como também para outras regiões. Este trabalho visa detectar lectina através da atividade hemaglutinante com a utilização de extratos de pau-ferro (Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex. Tul.), visgueiro (Parkia platycephala Benth.) e pau-d?óleo (Copaifera langsdorffii Desf.). Visgueiro éconsiderado um das leguminosas mais primitivas. È uma importante forrageira que cresce no Nordeste do Brasil. Pau-d?óleo árvore baixa, apresenta propriedades medicinais: emolientes, utilizada no tratamento de cistites, blenorragias, reumatismos e, em pequenas doses, é tônico. Pau-ferro, planta de grande porte, alto e robusto, casca lisa, é um anti-inflamatório natural e antibiótico. A pesquisa foi realizada na Chapada do Araripe, em Crato, CE, no período de dezembro de 2013 a abril de 2014. Foi selecionado apenas um individuo de cada espécie, onde as sementes foram trituradas, peneiradas para em seguida obter o extrato. Os extratos foram utilizados para testar a atividade aglutinante dos mesmos em eritrócitos de Jumento (Equus africanus asinus), carneiro (Ovis aries)e coelho (Orictolagus cuniculus). O extrato de visgueiro apresentou AH apenas para eritrócitos de carneiro, pau-ferro apresentou AH apenas para eritrócitos de jumento e pau-d'oleo apresentou AH para eritrócitos de carneiro e jumento. Indicando assim a presença de lectinas nesses extratos, porém os respectivos extratos não apresentaram atividades hemaglutinantes para eritrócitos de coelho. As lectinas detectadas apresentaram especificidade para a glicose

    Potential role of age, sex, body mass index and pain to identify patients with knee osteoarthritis

    Aim: To evaluate the potential role of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), radiographic features and pain in knee osteoarthritis (OA) case ascertainment. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was performed using information from the EPIPorto cohort; social, demographic, behavioral and clinical data was obtained. Pain was assessed using a pain frequency score (regarding ever having knee pain, pain in the last year, in the last 6 months and in the last month). Knee radiographs were classified using the Kellgren–Lawrence scale (0–4). Path analysis was used to assess the plausibility of the causal assumptions and a classification tree to identify characteristics that could improve the identification of patients with radiographic OA. Results: Higher age and higher BMI were associated with higher radiographic score, but sex had no statistical association. Females, higher age, higher BMI and higher radiographic score were statistically associated with higher pain scores. For both genders, the classification tree estimated age as the first variable to identify individuals with knee radiographic features. In females older than 56 years, pain frequency score is the second discriminator characteristic, followed by age (> 65 years) and (BMI > 30 kg/m2). Higher pain frequency and BMI > 29 kg/m2 were relevant for identifying OA in men with ages between 43.5 and 55.5 years. Conclusions: Age, BMI and pain frequency are independently associated with radiographic OA and the use of information on these characteristics can improve the identification of patients with knee OA.     The use of compression stockings for venous disorders in Brazil

    Objective: the aim of this study was to analyse the medical indication and the use of elastic compression stockings, and to assess patient adherence to treatment in different regions of Brazil.Method: the prescription and clinical indication of elastic stockings were evaluated in a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional, multicentre study for a population of private patients. in 2009, 3414 patients from 123 treatment centres in southern, south-eastern and north-eastern Brazil were evaluated using a questionnaire. the following variables were analysed: sociodemographic (gender, age, occupation and education), lifestyle (physical activity and time spent standing); classification of venous disease (CEAP [clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathophysiological] classification - clinical criteria), indications for prescription, consumer behaviour (strength, acquisition and use of stockings) and criteria of satisfaction (improvement, duration of use, adherence). the effects of compression therapy were assessed at a follow-up visit approximately 30 days after starting treatment with the following items being assessed: complaints about pain, discomfort, burning sensation and oedema of the leg while using elastic stockings.     Biometric traits as a tool for the identification and breeding of coffea canephora genotypes

This is an important crop for Brazil, the largest producer of this type of coffee and also a major exporter. The study of biometric characteristics is essential to assist in the selection of promising plant materials. We examined the diversity of morpho-agronomic traits of genotypes of C. canephora cv. Conilon through the evaluation of branch and leaf parameters. Assessments included plagiotropic branch length, number of nodes in plagiotropic branches, distance between nodes in plagiotropic branches, orthotropic branch length, number of nodes in orthotropic branch, distance between nodes in orthotropic branch, plant height, canopy diameter, leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area in two periods. The data from the 43 coffee genotypes were tested by multivariate and cluster analyses. Six groups were formed by the Tocher optimization method, and five groups by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) hierarchical method, suggesting an important genetic variability among plant materials. Both Tocher optimization and UPGMA hierarchical methods were consistent for clustering the genotypes, ordering them in six and five dissimilar groups, respectively, with genotypes 25 and 37 standing out with the greatest dissimilarity, constituting isolated groups by both methods. Pearson’s correlation ranged from very weak to very strong, positive and negative, among the characteristics, as also shown by principal component analyses. These analyses indicated the morpho-agronomic traits with a greater degree of correlation, assisting in the choice of promising plant materials. The genetic parameters estimates demonstrate genetic variability and thus breeding potential within the Conilon coffee genotypes studied.     Steel fibre reinforced concrete for elements failing in bending and in shear

    Discrete steel fibres can increase significantly the bending and the shear resistance of concrete structural elements when Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is designed in such a way that fibre reinforcing mechanisms are optimized. To assess the fibre reinforcement effectiveness in shallow structural elements failing in bending and in shear, experimental and numerical research were performed. Uniaxial compression and bending tests were executed to derive the constitutive laws of the developed SFRC. Using a cross-section layered model and the material constitutive laws, the deformational behaviour of structural elements failing in bending was predicted from the moment-curvature relationship of the representative cross sections. To evaluate the influence of the percentage of fibres on the shear resistance of shallow structures, three point bending tests with shallow beams were performed. The applicability of the formulation proposed by RILEM TC 162-TDF for the prediction of the shear resistance of SFRC elements was evaluated. Inverse analysis was adopted to determine indirectly the values of the fracture mode I parameters of the developed SFRC.     Computational prediction of the human-microbial oral interactome

    Background: The oral cavity is a complex ecosystem where human chemical compounds coexist with a particular microbiota. However, shifts in the normal composition of this microbiota may result in the onset of oral ailments, such as periodontitis and dental caries. In addition, it is known that the microbial colonization of the oral cavity is mediated by protein-protein interactions (PPIs) between the host and microorganisms. Nevertheless, this kind of PPIs is still largely undisclosed. To elucidate these interactions, we have created a computational prediction method that allows us to obtain a first model of the Human-Microbial oral interactome.Results: We collected high-quality experimental PPIs from five major human databases. The obtained PPIs were used to create our positive dataset and, indirectly, our negative dataset. The positive and negative datasets were merged and used for training and validation of a naïve Bayes classifier. For the final prediction model, we used an ensemble methodology combining five distinct PPI prediction techniques, namely: literature mining, primary protein sequences, orthologous profiles, biological process similarity, and domain interactions. Performance evaluation of our method revealed an area under the ROC-curve (AUC) value greater than 0.926, supporting our primary hypothesis, as no single set of features reached an AUC greater than 0.877. After subjecting our dataset to the prediction model, the classified result was filtered for very high confidence PPIs (probability ≥ 1-10-7), leading to a set of 46,579 PPIs to be further explored.Conclusions: We believe this dataset holds not only important pathways involved in the onset of infectious oral diseases, but also potential drug-targets and biomarkers.
