Goodwill Hunting:Why and When Ultimate Controlling Owners Affect Their Firms' Corporate Social Responsibility Performance
Researchers have long been interested in how owners affect firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance. However, owners face diverging ethical preferences between funding and potentially benefiting from their firms’ CSR performance. To better understand owners’ influence on firms’ CSR performance, we focus on ultimate controlling owners with the highest control rights over their firms. We theorize that ultimate controlling owners with more control rights have stronger motivations and greater decision-making power to promote firms’ CSR performance to demonstrate that they are responsible owners and gain legitimacy and goodwill from their stakeholders. Moreover, we explore how this positive relationship is strengthened when ultimate controlling owners and their firms share similar corporate names and receive increased financial analyst coverage, as these conditions increase the likelihood of gaining legitimacy and goodwill through their firms’ improved CSR performance. We test our theory using a sample of 852 publicly listed Chinese firms from 2008 to 2017. Our findings support our theoretical predictions and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how differences in ownership structure and owner type associated with ultimate controlling owners shape their motives and power to affect CSR performance in their firms
Conflict within species determines the value of a mutualism between species.
Mutually beneficial interactions between species play a key role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function. Nevertheless, such mutualisms can erode into antagonistic interactions. One explanation is that the fitness costs and benefits of interacting with a partner species vary among individuals. However, it is unclear why such variation exists. Here, we demonstrate that social behavior within species plays an important, though hitherto overlooked, role in determining the relative fitness to be gained from interacting with a second species. By combining laboratory experiments with field observations, we report that conflict within burying beetles Nicrophorus vespilloides influences the fitness that can be gained from interacting with the mite Poecilochirus carabi. Beetles transport these mites to carrion, upon which both species breed. We show that mites help beetles win intraspecific contests for this scarce resource: mites raise beetle body temperature, which enhances beetle competitive prowess. However, mites confer this benefit only upon smaller beetles, which are otherwise condemned by their size to lose contests for carrion. Larger beetles need no assistance to win a carcass and then lose reproductive success when breeding alongside mites. Thus, the extent of mutualism is dependent on an individual's inability to compete successfully and singlehandedly with conspecifics. Mutualisms degrade into antagonism when interactions with a partner species start to yield a net fitness loss, rather than a net fitness gain. This study suggests that interactions with conspecifics determine where this tipping point lies
Analysis of genetic diversity in Arrhenatherum elatius Germplasm using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers
The genetic diversity of 19 Arrhenatherum elatius accessions was analyzed using 100 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers, out of which 11 generated distinct amplification products. Out of the 152 total bands detected, 107 were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphic bands (PPB) was 68.9% with an average of 9.73 polymorphic bands per primer. The ISSR-based genetic similarity (GS) coefficients among the 19 accessions ranged from 0.4821 to 0.7411, revealing high genetic diversity. Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis and the principal components analysis (PCA), the 19 A. elatius accessions were divided into three groups with similar situations. We found that the genetic distance was related to the geographical distance among the 19 A. elatius accessions studied. These results confirm the potential value of genetic diversity preservation for future breeding programs.Key words: Arrhenatherum elatius, genetic diversity, inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers
Wavelet domain compounding for speckle reduction in optical coherence tomography
Visibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images can be severely degraded by speckle noise. A computationally efficient despeckling approach that strongly reduces the speckle noise is reported. It is based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT), but eliminates the conventional process of threshold estimation. By decomposing an image into different levels, a set of sub-band images are generated, where speckle noise is additive. These sub-band images can be compounded to suppress the additive speckle noise, as DWT coefficients resulting from speckle noise tend to be approximately decorrelated. The final despeckled image is reconstructed by taking the inverse wavelet transform of the new compounded sub-band images. The performance of speckle reduction and edge preservation is controlled by a single parameter: the level of wavelet decomposition. The proposed technique is applied to intravascular OCT imaging of porcine carotid arterial wall and ophthalmic OCT images. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique for speckle noise reduction and simultaneous edge preservation. The presented method is fast and easy to implement and to improve the quality of OCT images.published_or_final_versio

Experimental study on Shear capacity of cementitious composite RPC Beams using high strength steel
Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is a special concrete where the microstructure is optimized by precise gradation of all particles in the mix to yield maximum density. Therefore, Reactive Powder Concrete exhibits ultra-high strength and durability. The high strength reinforcement (HSR) has high strength and good plastic deformation properties. The combination of RPC and high strength reinforcement can fully exploit their respective advantages. At present, there is little research on shear capacity of HSR reinforced RPC concrete beams, neither are design guidelines for this type of structure. Therefore, it is imperative to make detailed investigations on the shear capacity of this type of concrete. In this paper, thirty-two full scale shear tests of high strength steel reinforced RPC beams were carried out. The parameters affecting the shear capacity of this type of structures were studied, the major failure modes of this type structure due to shear are identified
Towards formal modelling and verification of pervasive computing systems
Smart systems equipped with emerging pervasive computing technologies enable people with limitations to live in their homes independently. However, lack of guarantees for correctness prevent such system to be widely used. Analysing the system with regard to correctness requirements is a challenging task due to the complexity of the system and its various unpredictable faults. In this work, we propose to use formal methods to analyse pervasive computing (PvC) systems. Firstly, a formal modelling framework is proposed to cover the main characteristics of such systems (e.g., context-awareness, concurrent communications, layered architectures). Secondly, we identify the safety requirements (e.g., free of deadlocks and conflicts) and specify them as safety and liveness properties. Furthermore, based on the modelling framework, we propose an approach of verifying reasoning rules which are used in the middleware for perceiving the environment and making adaptation decisions. Finally, we demonstrate our ideas using a case study of a smart healthcare system. Experimental results show the usefulness of our approach in exploring system behaviours and revealing system design flaws such as information inconsistency and conflicting reminder services.No Full Tex
Forecasting daily attendances at an emergency department to aid resource planning
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate forecasting of emergency department (ED) attendances can be a valuable tool for micro and macro level planning.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data for analysis was the counts of daily patient attendances at the ED of an acute care regional general hospital from July 2005 to Mar 2008. Patients were stratified into three acuity categories; i.e. P1, P2 and P3, with P1 being the most acute and P3 being the least acute. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) method was separately applied to each of the three acuity categories and total patient attendances. Independent variables included in the model were public holiday (yes or no), ambient air quality measured by pollution standard index (PSI), daily ambient average temperature and daily relative humidity. The seasonal components of weekly and yearly periodicities in the time series of daily attendances were also studied. Univariate analysis by t-tests and multivariate time series analysis were carried out in SPSS version 15.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By time series analyses, P1 attendances did not show any weekly or yearly periodicity and was only predicted by ambient air quality of PSI > 50. P2 and total attendances showed weekly periodicities, and were also significantly predicted by public holiday. P3 attendances were significantly correlated with day of the week, month of the year, public holiday, and ambient air quality of PSI > 50.</p> <p>After applying the developed models to validate the forecast, the MAPE of prediction by the models were 16.8%, 6.7%, 8.6% and 4.8% for P1, P2, P3 and total attendances, respectively. The models were able to account for most of the significant autocorrelations present in the data.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Time series analysis has been shown to provide a useful, readily available tool for predicting emergency department workload that can be used to plan staff roster and resource planning.</p
Molecular characteristics of Polish field strains of Marek's disease herpesvirus isolated from vaccinated chickens
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Twenty-nine Marek's disease virus (MDV) strains were isolated during a 3 year period (2007-2010) from vaccinated and infected chicken flocks in Poland. These strains had caused severe clinical symptoms and lesions. In spite of proper vaccination with mono- or bivalent vaccines against Marek's disease (MD), the chickens developed symptoms of MD with paralysis.</p> <p>Because of this we decided to investigate possible changes and mutations in the field strains that could potentially increase their virulence. We supposed that such mutations may have been caused by recombination with retroviruses of poultry - especially reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to detect the possible reasons of recent changes in virulence of MDV strains, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses for <it>meq </it>oncogene and for long-terminal repeat (LTR) region of REV were conducted. The obtained PCR products were sequenced and compared with other MDV and REV strains isolated worldwide and accessible in the GeneBank database.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Sequencing of the <it>meq </it>oncogene showed a 68 basepair insertion and frame shift within 12 of 24 field strains. Interestingly, the analyses also showed 0.78, 0.8, 0.82, 1.6 kb and other random LTR-REV insertions into the MDV genome in 28 of 29 of strains. These genetic inserts were present after passage in chicken embryo kidney cells suggesting LTR integration into a non-functional region of the MDV genome.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results indicate the presence of a recombination between MDV and REV under field conditions in Polish chicken farms. The genetic changes within the MDV genome may influence the virus replication and its features <it>in vivo</it>. However, there is no evidence that <it>meq </it>alteration and REV insertions are related to the strains' virulence.</p
Cognitive appraisal of environmental stimuli induces emotion-like states in fish
The occurrence of emotions in non-human animals has been the focus of debate over the years. Recently, an interest in expanding this debate to non-tetrapod vertebrates and to invertebrates has emerged. Within vertebrates, the study of emotion in teleosts is particularly interesting since they represent a divergent evolutionary radiation from that of tetrapods, and thus they provide an insight into the evolution of the biological mechanisms of emotion. We report that Sea Bream exposed to stimuli that vary according to valence (positive, negative) and salience (predictable, unpredictable) exhibit different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states. Since according to the dimensional theory of emotion valence and salience define a two-dimensional affective space, our data can be interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of distinctive affective states in fish corresponding to each the four quadrants of the core affective space. Moreover, the fact that the same stimuli presented in a predictable vs. unpredictable way elicited different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states, suggests that stimulus appraisal by the individual, rather than an intrinsic characteristic of the stimulus, has triggered the observed responses. Enterobacter nimipressuralis as a cause of pseudobacteremia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The clinical significance of the <it>Enterobacter nimipressuralis </it>as human pathogens remains unclear.</p> <p>Case presentations</p> <p>The microbiologic culture monitoring system of sterile body fluids revealed on an episode of <it>Enterobacter cloacae </it>and <it>Enterobacter amnigenus </it>in blood culture results on the same day; the antibiotic sensitivity and MIC were nearly the same for both species. First patient was a healthy woman with postmenopausal syndrome, while second patient with herpes zoster. Both patients had febrile sensations without signs of bacteremia. <it>E. amnigenus </it>was also cultured from the unused package of salined cotton in the container through epidemiologic investigation. The cultured <it>Enterobacter </it>species were all identified as <it>E. nimipressuralis </it>through <it>hsp60 </it>gene sequencing and infrequent-restriction-site PCR (IRS-PCR).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>When an unusual microorganisms such as <it>E. nimipressuralis </it>is isolated from blood of a patient with no clinical signs of sepsis, a pseudobacteremia should be suspected. When the antibiogram and MIC test results of bacterial cultures from two or more patients are nearly the same, although the species involved may appear different, it may be necessary to prove that they are the same species through molecular methods. The microbiologic cultures monitoring system will probably help to detect pseudobacteremia and other pseudo infections through reliable and fast identification.</p
