Robo-line storage: Low latency, high capacity storage systems over geographically distributed networks
Rapid advances in high performance computing are making possible more complete and accurate computer-based modeling of complex physical phenomena, such as weather front interactions, dynamics of chemical reactions, numerical aerodynamic analysis of airframes, and ocean-land-atmosphere interactions. Many of these 'grand challenge' applications are as demanding of the underlying storage system, in terms of their capacity and bandwidth requirements, as they are on the computational power of the processor. A global view of the Earth's ocean chlorophyll and land vegetation requires over 2 terabytes of raw satellite image data. In this paper, we describe our planned research program in high capacity, high bandwidth storage systems. The project has four overall goals. First, we will examine new methods for high capacity storage systems, made possible by low cost, small form factor magnetic and optical tape systems. Second, access to the storage system will be low latency and high bandwidth. To achieve this, we must interleave data transfer at all levels of the storage system, including devices, controllers, servers, and communications links. Latency will be reduced by extensive caching throughout the storage hierarchy. Third, we will provide effective management of a storage hierarchy, extending the techniques already developed for the Log Structured File System. Finally, we will construct a protototype high capacity file server, suitable for use on the National Research and Education Network (NREN). Such research must be a Cornerstone of any coherent program in high performance computing and communications
Ancient west Eurasian ancestry in southern and eastern Africa
The history of southern Africa involved interactions between indigenous
hunter-gatherers and a range of populations that moved into the region. Here we
use genome-wide genetic data to show that there are at least two admixture
events in the history of Khoisan populations (southern African hunter-gatherers
and pastoralists who speak non-Bantu languages with click consonants). One
involved populations related to Niger-Congo-speaking African populations, and
the other introduced ancestry most closely related to west Eurasian (European
or Middle Eastern) populations. We date this latter admixture event to
approximately 900-1,800 years ago, and show that it had the largest demographic
impact in Khoisan populations that speak Khoe-Kwadi languages. A similar signal
of west Eurasian ancestry is present throughout eastern Africa. In particular,
we also find evidence for two admixture events in the history of Kenyan,
Tanzanian, and Ethiopian populations, the earlier of which involved populations
related to west Eurasians and which we date to approximately 2,700 - 3,300
years ago. We reconstruct the allele frequencies of the putative west Eurasian
population in eastern Africa, and show that this population is a good proxy for
the west Eurasian ancestry in southern Africa. The most parsimonious
explanation for these findings is that west Eurasian ancestry entered southern

A Call to Relational Leadership Arising from a Shared Eschatalogical Vision
The book of Revelation contrasts two distinct approaches to leadership. This article describes these approaches and concludes how Christians should practice leadership today. The two approaches are traced from the rebellion in heaven, through creation, and the life of Jesus, with a focus on Scripture’s apocalyptic messages. This study is needed because leadership in the church profoundly affects the church’s witness and accomplishment of mission. Faithfulness among God’s people in the last days can only be experienced when leadership is practiced according to God-honoring principles. This article concludes that the loving, non-coercive, relational dynamic—demonstrated by the Lamb’s leading during the Eschaton—provides a biblical template for Christian leadership in the present time
Diskless supercomputers: Scalable, reliable I/O for the Tera-Op technology base
Computing is seeing an unprecedented improvement in performance; over the last five years there has been an order-of-magnitude improvement in the speeds of workstation CPU's. At least another order of magnitude seems likely in the next five years, to machines with 500 MIPS or more. The goal of the ARPA Teraop program is to realize even larger, more powerful machines, executing as many as a trillion operations per second. Unfortunately, we have seen no comparable breakthroughs in I/O performance; the speeds of I/O devices and the hardware and software architectures for managing them have not changed substantially in many years. We have completed a program of research to demonstrate hardware and software I/O architectures capable of supporting the kinds of internetworked 'visualization' workstations and supercomputers that will appear in the mid 1990s. The effects of injection of bovine vaccine into a human digit: a case report
BACKGROUND: The incidence of needlestick injuries in farmers and veterinary surgeons is significant and the consequences of such an injection can be serious. CASE PRESENTATION: We report accidental injection of bovine vaccine into the base of the little finger. This resulted in increased pressure in the flexor sheath causing signs and symptoms of ischemia. Amputation of the digit was required despite repeated surgical debridement and decompression. CONCLUSION: There have been previous reports of injection of oil-based vaccines into the human hand resulting in granulomatous inflammation or sterile abscess and causing morbidity and tissue loss. Self-injection with veterinary vaccines is an occupational hazard for farmers and veterinary surgeons. Injection of vaccine into a closed compartment such as the human finger can have serious sequelae including loss of the injected digit. These injuries are not to be underestimated. Early debridement and irrigation of the injected area with decompression is likely to give the best outcome. Frequent review is necessary after the first procedure because repeat operations may be required
Cold heteromolecular dipolar collisions
We present the first experimental observation of cold collisions between two
different species of neutral polar molecules, each prepared in a single
internal quantum state. Combining for the first time the techniques of Stark
deceleration, magnetic trapping, and cryogenic buffer gas cooling allows the
enhancement of molecular interaction time by 10. This has enabled an
absolute measurement of the total trap loss cross sections between OH and
ND at a mean collision energy of 3.6 cm (5 K). Due to the dipolar
interaction, the total cross section increases upon application of an external
polarizing electric field. Cross sections computed from \emph{ab initio}
potential energy surfaces are in excellent agreement with the measured value at
zero external electric field. The theory presented here represents the first
such analysis of collisions between a radical and a closed-shell
polyatomic molecule.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
A Comparison of Reef Fish Assemblages on the East and West Sides of Central Eleuthera, Bahamas
Eleuthera is a long, narrow crescent-shaped Atlantic margin island on the eastern extremity of the Great Bahama Bank in the central Bahamas. It is 144 km long and less than 5 km at its greatest width. Fringing reefs with substantial vertical relief (to 5 m in depths of 6 m) are found approximately 500 m offshore on the eastern side of the island facing the Atlantic Ocean. The western side of the island has stretches of rock cliffs and large fallen boulders providing substrate with similar vertical relief. No open passes exist between the two sides of the island and thus no direct larval transport from one side to the other appears possible. We compared post-settlement fish assemblages and larval supply on either side of central Eleuthera near Governor’s Harbour quarterly from July 2003 until July 2004. Twelve point-counts were performed at two replicate sites on both sides of the island to census juveniles and adults. Abundance, as well as average, maximum and minimum lengths of species present were recorded. Three light traps were moored at each of the same sites 40-50 m from the reef for three to five nights around the new moon to examine larval supply. Fish collected in the light traps were preserved and transported to the lab. They were identified, enumerated, and standard length was measured. Preliminary analyses of point-count and light trap data indicate dissimilar assemblage structure between the two sides of the island, with significantly greater fish abundance and species richness on the eastern side
An Experimental Approach to a Rapid Propulsion and Aeronautics Concepts Testbed
Modern aircraft design tools have limitations for predicting complex propulsion-airframe interactions. The demand for new tools and methods addressing these limitations is high based on the many recent Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) concepts being developed for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) markets. We propose that low cost electronics and additive manufacturing can support the conceptual design of advanced autonomy-enabled concepts, by facilitating rapid prototyping for experimentally driven design cycles. This approach has the potential to reduce complex aircraft concept development costs, minimize unique risks associated with the conceptual design, and shorten development schedule by enabling the determination of many "unknown unknowns" earlier in the design process and providing verification of the results from aircraft design tools. A modular testbed was designed and built to evaluate this rapid design-build-test approach and to support aeronautics and autonomy research targeting UAM applications utilizing a complex, transitioning-VTOL aircraft configuration. The testbed is a modular wind tunnel and flight model. The testbed airframe is approximately 80% printed, with labor required for assembly. Lessons Learned from Developing a Learning–Focused Classroom Observation Form: Learning-Focused Observation Form
At the United States Air Force Academy, we are attempting to go through a cultural transformation, making an overt shift toward a more learning-focused paradigm. In this chapter, we describe the nature of this transformation, as well as why we have chosen to move in this direction. We also describe one specific initiative we have undertaken: the development of a new learning-focused classroom observation form. We conclude by sharing a baker’s dozen lessons we have learned about classroom observation, effective teaching, and faculty development in general as a result of having developed this form

Microarray detection of human parainfluenzavirus 4 infection associated with respiratory failure in an immunocompetent adult.
A pan-viral DNA microarray, the Virochip (University of California, San Francisco), was used to detect human parainfluenzavirus 4 (HPIV-4) infection in an immunocompetent adult presenting with a life-threatening acute respiratory illness. The virus was identified in an endotracheal aspirate specimen, and the microarray results were confirmed by specific polymerase chain reaction and serological analysis for HPIV-4. Conventional clinical laboratory testing using an extensive panel of microbiological tests failed to yield a diagnosis. This case suggests that the potential severity of disease caused by HPIV-4 in adults may be greater than previously appreciated and illustrates the clinical utility of a microarray for broad-based viral pathogen screening
