    Get PDF
This article presents a theoretical review of the recent research related to mindfulness in education, specifically that concerned with the contribution of this practice to the self-care of teachers and with how the cultivation of a fuller presence by teachers influences the formative process overall, putting special emphasis in the cultivation of certain attitudes: attentional (non-judgment, beginner’s mind, and right effort) and relational (kindness, empathy, and compassion) attitudes. In this way, the study carries out a rigorous review of pertinent research and proposes a guiding model for diverse interventions based on what we call “mindfulness focus,” emphasizing the need for a systemic view, beyond isolated events, with the purpose of influencing the education system overall toward a culture of well-being.https://scielo.conicyt.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0718-07052018000100241&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=e

Autonomous Satellite Recovery Vehicle (ASRV) Final Report

In collaboration with Embry-Riddle Future Space Explorers and Developers Society (ERFSEDS), we came up with the idea to build a quad-copter/sensor system that could be deployed from a rocket. The goal is to build a new chassis for the quad-copters electronic components that will allow the quad-copters arms to fold inwards to meet the required space constraints of a rocket. In addition to the critical components of the quad-copter, our design will integrate a number of other data collecting sub-systems currently being used in a weather balloon designed by Society 4 S.P.A.C.E. club members. After being jettisoned from the rocket, the sensor systems objective would be to collect atmospheric data as it descends. At the altitude of 2,000 feet the quad-copter would be programmed to deploy a parachute. Once it has reached a safe velocity the arms would extend, motors engage, and the quad would autonomously navigate to a prearranged location. Flight planning will be done using a preexisting flight planning application. Data gathered from the sensors will include pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, and video. This project will give us a better understanding of rocket propulsion systems and the effect of launch on the payload. It will also allow us to gain valuable research, data retrieval, team development and multi-club collaboration experience

CrimeBB: Enabling cybercrime research on underground forums at scale

    Get PDF
Underground forums allow criminals to interact, exchange knowledge, and trade in products and services. They also provide a pathway into cybercrime, tempting the curious to join those already motivated to obtain easy money. Analysing these forums enables us to better understand the behaviours of offenders and pathways into crime. Prior research has been valuable, but limited by a reliance on datasets that are incomplete or outdated. More complete data, going back many years, allows for comprehensive research into the evolution of forums and their users. We describe CrimeBot, a crawler designed around the particular challenges of capturing data from underground forums. CrimeBot is used to update and maintain CrimeBB, a dataset of more than 48m posts made from 1m accounts in 4 different operational forums over a decade. This dataset presents a new opportunity for large-scale and longitudinal analysis using up-to-date information. We illustrate the potential by presenting a case study using CrimeBB, which analyses which activities lead new actors into engagement with cybercrime. CrimeBB is available to other academic researchers under a legal agreement, designed to prevent misuse and provide safeguards for ethical research

Sex-partitioning of the <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i> stage V gametocyte proteome provides insight into <i>falciparum</i>-specific cell biology

One of the critical gaps in malaria transmission biology and surveillance is our lack of knowledge about Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte biology, especially sexual dimorphic development and how sex ratios that may influence transmission from the human to the mosquito. Dissecting this process has been hampered by the lack of sex-specific protein markers for the circulating, mature stage V gametocytes. The current evidence suggests a high degree of conservation in gametocyte gene complement across Plasmodium, and therefore presumably for sex-specific genes as well. To better our understanding of gametocyte development and subsequent infectiousness to mosquitoes, we undertook a Systematic Subtractive Bioinformatic analysis (filtering) approach to identify sex-specific P. falciparum NF54 protein markers based on a comparison with the Dd2 strain, which is defective in producing males, and with syntenic male and female proteins from the reanalyzed and updated P. berghei (related rodent malaria parasite) gametocyte proteomes. This produced a short list of 174 male- and 258 female-enriched P. falciparum stage V proteins, some of which appear to be under strong diversifying selection, suggesting ongoing adaptation to mosquito vector species. We generated antibodies against three putative female-specific gametocyte stage V proteins in P. falciparum and confirmed either conserved sex-specificity or the lack of cross-species sex-partitioning. Finally, our study provides not only an additional resource for mass spectrometry-derived evidence for gametocyte proteins but also lays down the foundation for rational screening and development of novel sex-partitioned protein biomarkers and transmission-blocking vaccine candidates

Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) is an ornamental plant highly appreciated for its fragrance and coloration; however, one of its disadvantages during its commercialization is its short post-harvest life marked by a change in the flower coloration. The action inhibition of ethylene has been taken advantage of as a strategy to extend the vase life of some ornamental plants, and thus, the application of two ethylene inhibitors was evaluated, with the purpose of extending the vase life of gardenia. The inhibitors were applied for 4, 12 and 24 h in flowers cut in different stages of development. As parameters of senescence the following were evaluated: fresh weight, color of petals, flower longevity, flower epinasty, and application of 1-MCP. The results showed that the 1-MCP delayed the senescence when applied on flowers in the phase known as “striped” during 24 h, increasing the life of the vase almost two days.

Cheese whey: a cost-effective alternative for hyaluronic acid production by Streptococcus zooepidemicus

    Get PDF
This study focuses on the optimization of cheese whey formulated media for the production of hyaluronic acid HA by Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Culture media containing whey (W; 2.1 g/L) or whey hydrolysate (WH; 2.4 g/L) gave the highest HA productions. Both W and WH produced high yields on protein consumed, suggesting cheese whey is a good nitrogen source for S. zooepidemicus production of HA. Polysaccharide concentrations of 4.0 g/L and 3.2 g/L were produced in W and WH in a further scale-up to 5 L bioreactors, confirming the suitability of the low-cost nitrogen source. Cheese whey culture media provided high molecular weight (> 3000 kDa) HA products. This study revealed replacing the commercial peptone by the low-cost alternative could reduce HA production costs by up to a 70%compared to synthetic media.Isabel Rodriguez was funded by a postdoctoral contract from the Xunta de Galicia, Spain (Plan I2C, 2012).
