A Case of Pseudo-xanthoma Elasticum Presenting with Ischaemic Claudication
AbstractA 37-year-old man presented with symptoms of intermittent claudication. Investigations revealed atypical calf vessel disease but no obvious aetiology. Ten years later he re-presented with worsening symptoms. CT angiography confirmed the atypical pattern of lower limb arterial disease but also noted calcification of the renal parenchyma, myocardium and scrotum. A diagnosis of pseudo-xanthoma elasticum was confirmed by skin biopsy. Pseudo-xanthoma elasticum is a rare condition that presents infrequently to vascular surgeons. Early recognition should prompt aggressive risk factor management to slow accelerated atherosclerosis. Clinicians should be aware of the clinical features of this condition to allow early diagnosis
Toward high-precision values of the self energy of non-S states in hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions
The method and status of a study to provide numerical, high-precision values
of the self-energy level shift in hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions is described.
Graphs of the self energy in hydrogen-like ions with nuclear charge number
between 20 and 110 are given for a large number of states. The self-energy is
the largest contribution of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) to the energy levels
of these atomic systems. These results greatly expand the number of levels for
which the self energy is known with a controlled and high precision.
Applications include the adjustment of the Rydberg constant and atomic

Chern-Simons Reduction and non-Abelian Fluid Mechanics
We propose a non-Abelian generalization of the Clebsch parameterization for a
vector in three dimensions. The construction is based on a group-theoretical
reduction of the Chern-Simons form on a symmetric space. The formalism is then
used to give a canonical (symplectic) discussion of non-Abelian fluid
mechanics, analogous to the way the Abelian Clebsch parameterization allows a

Statistics of Atmospheric Correlations
For a large class of quantum systems the statistical properties of their
spectrum show remarkable agreement with random matrix predictions. Recent
advances show that the scope of random matrix theory is much wider. In this
work, we show that the random matrix approach can be beneficially applied to a
completely different classical domain, namely, to the empirical correlation
matrices obtained from the analysis of the basic atmospheric parameters that
characterise the state of atmosphere. We show that the spectrum of atmospheric
correlation matrices satisfy the random matrix prescription. In particular, the
eigenmodes of the atmospheric empirical correlation matrices that have physical

Cross-species chromosome painting in bats from Madagascar: the contribution of Myzopodidae to revealing ancestral syntenies in Chiroptera
The chiropteran fauna of Madagascar comprises eight of the 19 recognized families of bats, including the endemic Myzopodidae. While recent systematic studies of Malagasy bats have contributed to our understanding of the morphological and genetic diversity of the island’s fauna, little is known about their cytosystematics. Here we investigate karyotypic relationships among four species, representing four families of Chiroptera endemic to the Malagasy region using cross-species chromosome painting with painting probes of Myotis myotis: Myzopodidae (Myzopoda aurita, 2n=26), Molossidae (Mormopterus jugularis, 2n=48), Miniopteridae (Miniopterus griveaudi, 2n=46), and Vespertilionidae (Myotis goudoti, 2n=44). This study represents the first time a member of the family Myzopodidae has been investigated using chromosome painting. Painting probes of Myotis. myotis were used to delimit 30, 24, 23, and 22 homologous chromosomal segments in the genomes of Myzopoda aurita, Mormopterus jugularis, Miniopterus . griveaudi and Myotis . goudoti, respectively. Comparison of GTG-banded homologous chromosomes/chromosomal segments among the four species revealed the genome of M. aurita has been structured through 15 fusions of chromosomes and chromosomal segments of Myotis. myotis chromosomes leading to a karyotype consisting solely of bi-armed chromosomes. In addition, chromosome painting revealed a novel X-autosome translocation in Myzopoda. aurita. Comparison of our results with published chromosome maps provided further evidence for karyotypic conservatism within the genera Mormopterus, Miniopterus and Myotis. Mapping of chromosomal rearrangements onto a molecular consensus phylogeny revealed ancestral syntenies shared between Myzopoda and other bat species of the infraorders Pteropodiformes and Vespertilioniformes. Our study provides further evidence for the involvement of Robertsonian (Rb) translocations and fusions/fissions in chromosomal evolution within Chiroptera
Reversible maps and composites of involutions in groups of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the real line
An element of a group is reversible if it is conjugate to its own inverse, and it is strongly reversible if it is conjugate to its inverse by an involution. A group element is strongly reversible if and only if it can be expressed as a composite of two involutions. In this paper the reversible maps, the strongly reversible maps, and those maps that can be expressed as a composite of involutions are determined in certain groups of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the real line
Optical frequency measurement of the 1S-3S two-photon transition in hydrogen
This article reports the first optical frequency measurement of the
transition in hydrogen. The excitation of this
transition occurs at a wavelength of 205 nm which is obtained with two
frequency doubling stages of a titanium sapphire laser at 820 nm. Its frequency
is measured with an optical frequency comb. The second-order Doppler effect is
evaluated from the observation of the motional Stark effect due to a transverse
magnetic field perpendicular to the atomic beam. The measured value of the
frequency splitting is with a relative uncertainty of
. After the measurement of the
frequency, this result is the most precise of the optical frequencies in
hydrogen
The clinical spectrum of Kommerell's diverticulum in adults with a right-sided aortic arch: a case series and literature overview
Background: Kommerell's diverticulum is a rare vascular anomaly characterized as an outpouch at the onset of an aberrant subclavian artery. In the variant of a right-sided aortic arch, the trachea and esophagus are enclosed dorsally by the arch. In the configuration of an aberrant left subclavian artery, a Kommerell's diverticulum and persisting ductus arteriosus or ductal ligament enclose the lateral side, forming a vascular ring which may result in (symptomatic) esophageal or tracheal compression. Spontaneous rupture of an aneurysmatic Kommerell's diverticulum has also been reported. Due to the rarity of this condition and underreporting in the literature, the clinical implications of a Kommerell's diverticulum are not well defined. Case summary: We describe seven consecutive adult patients with a right-sided aortic arch and an aberrant course of the left subclavian artery (arteria lusoria), and a Kommerell's diverticulum, diagnosed in our tertiary hospital. One patient had severe symptoms related to the Kommerell's diverticulum and underwent surgical repair. In total, two of the patients experienced mild non-limiting dyspnea complaints and in four patients the Kommerell's diverticulum was incidentally documented on a computed tomography (CT) scan acquired for a different indication. The size of the Kommerell's diverticulum ranged from 19 x 21 mm to 30 x 29 mm. In the six patients that did not undergo surgery, a strategy of periodic follow-up with structural imaging was pursued. No significant growth of the Kommerell's diverticulum was observed and none of the patients experienced an acute aortic syndrome to date. Discussion: Kommerell's diverticulum in the setting of a right-sided aortic arch with an aberrant left subclavian artery is frequently associated with tracheal and esophageal compression and this may result in a varying range of symptoms. Guidelines on management of Kommerell's diverticulum are currently lacking. This case series and literature overview suggests that serial follow-up is warranted in adult patients with a Kommerell's diverticulum with small dimensions and no symptoms, however, that surgical intervention should be considered when patients become symptomatic or when the diameter exceeds 30 mm in the absence of symptoms.Cardiolog
Isospin Asymmetry in Nuclei and Neutron Stars
The roles of isospin asymmetry in nuclei and neutron stars are investigated
using a range of potential and field-theoretical models of nucleonic matter.
The parameters of these models are fixed by fitting the properties of
homogeneous bulk matter and closed-shell nuclei. We discuss and unravel the
causes of correlations among the neutron skin thickness in heavy nuclei, the
pressure of beta-equilibrated matter at a density of 0.1 fm, the
derivative of the nuclear symmetry energy at the same density and the radii of
moderate mass neutron stars. Constraints on the symmetry properties of nuclear
matter from the binding energies of nuclei are examined. The extent to which
forthcoming neutron skin measurements will further delimit the symmetry
properties is investigated. The impact of symmetry energy constraints for the
mass and moment of inertia contained within neutron star crusts and the
threshold density for the nucleon direct Urca process, all of which are
potentially measurable, is explored. We also comment on the minimum neutron

Fast variability from black-hole binaries
Currently available information on fast variability of the X-ray emission
from accreting collapsed objects constitutes a complex phenomenology which is
difficult to interpret. We review the current observational standpoint for
black-hole binaries and survey models that have been proposed to interpret it.
Despite the complex structure of the accretion flow, key observational
diagnostics have been identified which can provide direct access to the
dynamics of matter motions in the close vicinity of black holes and thus to the
some of fundamental properties of curved spacetimes, where strong-field general
