    Food elimination based on IgG antibodies in irritable bowel syndrome: a randomised controlled trial

    Background: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often feel they have some form of dietary intolerance and frequently try exclusion diets. Tests attempting to predict food sensitivity in IBS have been disappointing but none has utilised IgG antibodies. Aims: To assess the therapeutic potential of dietary elimination based on the presence of IgG antibodies to food. Patients: A total of 150 outpatients with IBS were randomised to receive, for three months, either a diet excluding all foods to which they had raised IgG antibodies ( enzyme linked immunosorbant assay test) or a sham diet excluding the same number of foods but not those to which they had antibodies. Methods: Primary outcome measures were change in IBS symptom severity and global rating scores. Non-colonic symptomatology, quality of life, and anxiety/depression were secondary outcomes. Intention to treat analysis was undertaken using a generalised linear model. Results: After 12 weeks, the true diet resulted in a 10% greater reduction in symptom score than the sham diet ( mean difference 39 (95% confidence intervals (CI) 5 - 72); p = 0.024) with this value increasing to 26% in fully compliant patients ( difference 98 ( 95% CI 52 - 144); p< 0.001). Global rating also significantly improved in the true diet group as a whole ( p = 0.048, NNT = 9) and even more in compliant patients ( p = 0.006, NNT = 2.5). All other outcomes showed trends favouring the true diet. Relaxing the diet led to a 24% greater deterioration in symptoms in those on the true diet ( difference 52 ( 95% CI 18 - 88); p = 0.003). Conclusion: Food elimination based on IgG antibodies may be effective in reducing IBS symptoms and is worthy of further biomedical research

    Effect of Order-Parameter Suppression on Scattering by Isolated Impurities in Asymmetric Bands

    The single-impurity problem in d-wave superconductors with asymmetric bands is discussed. The effect of local order parameter suppression near the impurity is to shift the quasiparticle resonance. Contrary to previous work [A. Shnirman et al., Phys. Rev.     Renormalization of thermal conductivity of disordered d-wave superconductors by impurity-induced local moments

    The low-temperature thermal conductivity \kappa_0/T of d-wave superconductors is generally thought to attain a "universal" value independent of disorder at sufficiently low temperatures, providing an important measure of the magnitude of the gap slope near its nodes. We discuss situations in which this inference can break down because of competing order, and quasiparticle localization. Specifically, we study an inhomogeneous BCS mean field model with electronic correlations included via a Hartree approximation for the Hubbard interaction, and show that the suppression of \kappa_0/T by localization effects can be strongly enhanced by magnetic moment formation around potential scatterers.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, submitted to M2S-HTSC VIII, Dresden 200

    Fundamental optical and magneto-optical constants of Co/Pt and CoNi/Pt multilayered films

    A study has been made of the optical and magneto-optical properties of several Co/Pt and CoNi/Pt multilayered films that were fabricated by magnetron sputter deposition. Spectroscopic rotating analyzer ellipsometry and Kerr polarimetry were carried out to determine the fundamental optical and magneto-optical constants over the spectral range 320¿860 nm. The constants determined were the complex refractive index and the first-order magneto-optic Voigt parameter. A total of seven films were examined and excellent reproducibility was observed in the measured material constants. These have been used to discuss the spectral dependence of the figure-of-merit, for each material, associated with the detection of the polar Kerr effect

    Low-energy quasiparticle excitations in dirty d-wave superconductors and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes kicked rotator

    We investigate the quasiparticle density of states in disordered d-wave superconductors. By constructing a quantum map describing the quasiparticle dynamics in such a medium, we explore deviations of the density of states from its universal form (E\propto E), and show that additional low-energy quasiparticle states exist provided (i) the range of the impurity potential is much larger than the Fermi wavelength [allowing to use recently developed semiclassical methods]; (ii) classical trajectories exist along which the pair-potential changes sign; and (iii) the diffractive scattering length is longer than the superconducting coherence length. In the classically chaotic regime, universal random matrix theory behavior is restored by quantum dynamical diffraction which shifts the low energy states away from zero energy, and the quasiparticle density of states exhibits a linear pseudogap below an energy threshold EΔ0E^* \ll \Delta_0.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTe

    Microwave conductivity of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.99_{6.99} including inelastic scattering

    The fluctuation spectrum responsible for the inelastic scattering in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.99_{6.99} which was recently determined from consideration of the in-plane optical conductivity in the infrared, is used to calculate the temperature dependence of the microwave conductivity at several measured frequencies. Reasonable overall agreement can only be achieved if, in addition, some impurity scattering is included within a model potential intermediate between weak (Born) and strong (unitary) limit.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures accepted for publication in Phys.     Relative diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care tests to rule-in Dirofilaria immitis infection in clinically suspect dogs: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, can cause severe disease and sometimes death of the host. Associated clinical signs, lack of preventative usage and regional endemicity are unlikely sufficient by themselves to reach a definitive diagnosis. Several point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests are commercially available to aid in-clinic diagnosis, however, there is variable diagnostic accuracy reported and no synthesis of published evidence. This systematic review aims at meta-analysing the likelihood ratio of a positive result (LR+) to inform the selection and interpretation of POC tests in practice to rule-in heartworm infection when there is clinical suspicion. Three literature index interfaces (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus) were searched on November 11th, 2022, for diagnostic test evaluation (DTE) articles assessing at least one currently commercialised POC test. Risk of bias was assessed adapting the QUADAS-2 protocol and articles with no evidence of high risk of bias were metaanalysed if deemed applicable to our review objective. Substantial between DTE heterogeneity was investigated including potential threshold or covariate effects. A total of 324 primary articles were sourced and 18 were retained for full text review of which only three had low risk of bias in all four QUADAS-2 domains. Of the nine heartworm POC tests evaluated, only three, IDEXX SNAP (n DTEs = 6), Zoetis WITNESS (n DTEs = 3) and Zoetis VETSCAN (n DTEs = 5) could be analysed. Both WITNESS and VETSCAN DTEs showed substantial heterogeneity due to a putative threshold effect and no summary point estimates could be reported. SNAP DTEs showed acceptable heterogeneity, and a summary LR+ was estimated at 559.0 (95%CI: 24.3–12,847.4). The quality and heterogeneity of heartworm POC test DTEs was highly variable which restricted our summary of the diagnostic accuracy to only the SNAP test. A positive result from the SNAP test provides strong evidence of the presence of an infection with adult heartworm(s) in a dog patient and this test is warranted to rule-in clinical suspicion(s) in clinics. However, our review did not appraise the literature to assess the fitness of SNAP test, or any other POC tests, to rule-out heartworm infection in dogs without clinical suspicion or following heartworm therapy.Peter J.     A plasticity model for powder compaction processes incorporating particle deformation and rearrangement

Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier Ltd.This paper develops a mechanistic model of granular materials that can be used with a commercial finite element package (ABAQUS). The model draws on the ideas of critical state soil mechanics and combines them with the theory of envelopes to develop an elasto-plastic model with a non-associated flow rule. The model incorporates both local deformation at the granule contacts, and rearrangement of the granules so that jointly they account for any bulk deformation. The mechanics of the model closely reflect the physicality of the material behaviour and the model parameters are closely linked (although not simplistically identical) to the characteristics of the granules. This not only gives an insight into the material behaviour, but also enables the model to be used to facilitate design of the material, its processing properties and, hence, component development. The model is used to simulate drained triaxial tests, settlement of a powder in a bin, and some examples of die pressing. Simulations are compared with experimental data and with predictions obtained using other models

    Spectral and Transport Properties of d-Wave Superconductors With Strong Impurities

    One of the remarkable features of disordered d-wave superconductors is strong sensitivity of long range properties to the microscopic realization of the disorder potential. Particularly rich phenomenology is observed for the -- experimentally relevant -- case of dilute distributions of isolated impurity centers. Building on earlier diagrammatic analyses, the present paper derives and analyses a low energy effective field theory of this system. Specifically, the results of previous diagrammatic T-matrix approaches are extended into the perturbatively inaccessible low energy regimes, and the long range (thermal) transport behaviour of the system is discussed. It turns out that in the extreme case of a half-filled tight binding band and infinitely strong impurities (impurities at the unitary limit), the system is in a delocalized phase.Comment: 14 pages, two figures include

    Absolute values of the London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O6+y measured by zero field ESR spectroscopy on Gd doped single crystals

    Zero-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of dilute Gd ions substituted for Y in the cuprate superconductor YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+y_{\rm 6+y} is used as a novel technique for measuring the absolute value of the low temperature magnetic penetration depth λ(T0)\lambda(T\to 0). The Gd ESR spectrum of samples with 1\approx 1% substitution was obtained with a broadband microwave technique that measures power absorption bolometrically from 0.5 GHz to 21 GHz. This ESR spectrum is determined by the crystal field that lifts the level degeneracy of the spin 7/2 Gd3+^{3+} ion and details of this spectrum provide information concerning oxygen ordering in the samples. The magnetic penetration depth is obtained by relating the number of Gd ions exposed to the microwave magnetic field to the frequency-integrated intensity of the observed ESR transitions. This technique has allowed us to determine precise values of λ\lambda for screening currents flowing in the three crystallographic orientations (a^\hat a, b^\hat b and c^\hat c) in samples of Gdx_{\rm x}Y1x_{\rm 1-x}Ba2_2Cu3_3O6+y_{6+{\rm y}} of three different oxygen contents y=0.993{\rm y}=0.993 (Tc=89T_c = 89 K), y=0.77{\rm y}=0.77 (Tc=75T_c=75 K) and y=0.52{\rm y}=0.52 (Tc=56T_c=56 K).
