Etiopathogenesis of Behçet's disease with emphasison the role of immunological aberrations

    No full text
Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multisystemic inflammatory disorder of unknown origin consisting of oral aphthous ulcers, ocular symptoms, skin lesions, and genital ulcerations. It has many features in common with systemic vasculitides and is more prevalent in countries along the ancient Silk route. Immune-mediated mechanisms play a major role in the pathogenesis of the disease, and inflammatory mediators are also involved. BD is not considered to be an autoimmune disorder, and the character of the disease needs to be clarified. Immunological aberrations in BD have been extensively studied by many investigators; genetic factors have been related to disease susceptibility, but their exact role in the development of disease is uncertain. Environmental factors such as infectious agents have also been implicated in the etiology of BD. However, the etiopathogenesis of the disease remains to be elucidated. Factors involved in the immunopathogenesis of BD with emphasis on the role of immunological aberrations are analyzed in this review. © 2010 Clinical Rheumatology

    Juvenile Adamantiades-Behçet Disease

Adamantiades-Behçet disease (ABD) is a chronic, multisystemic, recurrent, inflammatory vascular disorder of unknown etiology. Patients with symptoms initially appearing at the age of 16 or less are considered as cases of juvenile-onset ABD (JABD). JABD is relatively rare compared to ABD of adults, and only case reports and case studies have been published regarding this subtype of the disease. Epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of JABD are discussed in this review. © 2016 S. Karger AG, Basel

The frequency of arthritis in Adamantiades-Behçet's disease in Greek patients

Background/Objectives: Musculoskeletal manifestations are frequent in Adamantiades-Behçet's disease (ABD) but only represent non-specific clinical findings. They have not been included in the two commonly used sets of classification criteria. The occurrence of musculoskeletal manifestations at ABD onset may even delay or obscure the diagnosis; therefore, detailed knowledge of the different musculoskeletal manifestations is essential. Our objective was to describe musculoskeletal signs and their clinical course in Greek ABD patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study, which included all patients with ABD, who had been examined in our Rheumatology Outpatient Division from 1995 to 2010. The study included 224 ABD patients (140 male, 84 female) that fulfilled the International Criteria for the diagnosis of BD. For statistical analysis, we have used chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Results: Arthritis as a presenting sign was seen in 10.2% of our patients. During the follow-up period, the frequency of arthritis was 58.4%. Monoarthritis was found in 32.8% and 22.6% of male and female patients, respectively (ns). During the follow-up period, polyarthritis was only occasionally observed in male patients (2.14%). Oligoarthritis was assessed in 20.0% and 41.6% of male and female patients, respectively (P < 0.001), and was the only significantly different manifestation between sexes. Conclusions: Musculoskeletal manifestations are common in ABD both at presentation and during the disease course. The most frequent sign is mooarthritis. Oligoarthritis was the only significantly different articular manifestation between sexes (more common in women) in our study group. © 2018 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereolog

GPU-Vote: A Framework for Accelerating Voting Algorithms on GPU.

    No full text
Voting algorithms, such as histogram and Hough transforms, are frequently used algorithms in various domains, such as statistics and image processing. Algorithms in these domains may be accelerated using GPUs. Implementing voting algorithms efficiently on a GPU however is far from trivial due to irregularities and unpredictable memory accesses. Existing GPU implementations therefore target only specific voting algorithms while we propose in this work a methodology which targets voting algorithms in general. This methodology is used in gpu-vote, a framework to accelerate current and future voting algorithms on a GPU without significant programming effort. We classify voting algorithms into four categories. We describe a transformation to merge categories which enables gpu-vote to have a single implementation for all voting algorithms. Despite the generality of gpu-vote, being able to handle various voting algorithms, its performance is not compromised. Compared to recently published GPU implementations of the Hough transform and the histogram algorithms, gpu-vote yields a 11% and 38% lower execution time respectively. Additionally, we give an accurate and intuitive performance prediction model for the generalized GPU voting algorithm. Our model can predict the execution time of gpu-vote within an average absolute error of 5%

Diagnosis and treatment complications of primary cardiac lymphoma in an immunocompetent 28-year old man: A case report

    No full text
Background: Primary cardiac lymphomas (PCL) represent extremely rare cardiac tumors which are accompanied by poor prognosis, unless they are timely diagnosed and treated. Case presentation: Herein we present a 28-year-old, immunocompetent man who presented to our hospital due to progressively worsening symptoms and signs of superior vena cava syndrome. Multi-modality imaging demonstrated a large intracardiac tumor, which was proven, by biopsy, to be a PCL. The patient received targeted chemotherapy which led to total remission of his disease, with no relapse over a 15-month follow-up period. Conclusions: Although PCLs are rare, they should always be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of cardiac tumors. Timely diagnosis of PCLs and appropriate chemotherapy, alone or in combination with radiotherapy, seems to provide the best results. © 2019 The Author(s)
