    We present results from a study of meson spectra and structure in the limit where one quark is infinitely heavy. The calculations, based on the framework of light-front QCD formulated on a transverse lattice, are the first non-perturbative studies of B-mesons in light-front QCD.     Possibility of quantitative T2-mapping MRI of cartilage near metal in high tibial osteotomy: A human cadaver study

    T2-mapping is a widely used quantitative MRI technique in osteoarthritis research. An important challenge for its application in the context of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is the presence of metallic fixation devices. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of performing T2-mapping after a HTO, by assessing the extent of magnetic susceptibility artifacts and the influence on T2 relaxation times caused by two commonly used fixation devices.     Rapid assessment of antibiotic susceptibility using a fully 3D-printed impedance- based biosensor

    The sustained misuse and overuse of antibacterial agents is accelerating the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is becoming one of the major threats to public health. Abuse of antibiotics drives spontaneous evolution, bacterial mutation, and exchange of resistant genes through lateral gene transfer. Mitigating the worldwide impact of AMR requires enhanced antibiotic stewardship through faster diagnostic testing. In this work, we aim to tackle this issue via development of a fully 3D-printed electrochemical, gel-modified biosensor for rapid bacterial growth monitoring. By using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we have successfully identified growth profiles and confirmed antibiotic susceptibility of two ESKAPE pathogens, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, following overnight culture it was possible to determine antibiotic sensitivity in 90 min, altogether faster than the 24–48 h current gold standard of culture-based antimicrobial susceptibility testing with significant scope for optimisation. Results show a clear distinction between growth profiles in the presence and absence of amoxicillin, gentamicin, and fosfomycin, therefore demonstrating a rapid, cost-efficient platform for phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility testing within clinically relevant concentration ranges for conditions such as urinary tract infections and pneumonia

    Einstein's quantum theory of the monatomic ideal gas: non-statistical arguments for a new statistics

    In this article, we analyze the third of three papers, in which Einstein presented his quantum theory of the ideal gas of 1924-1925. Although it failed to attract the attention of Einstein's contemporaries and although also today very few commentators refer to it, we argue for its significance in the context of Einstein's quantum researches. It contains an attempt to extend and exhaust the characterization of the monatomic ideal gas without appealing to combinatorics. Its ambiguities illustrate Einstein's confusion with his initial success in extending Bose's results and in realizing the consequences of what later became to be called Bose-Einstein statistics. We discuss Einstein's motivation for writing a non-combinatorial paper, partly in response to criticism by his friend Ehrenfest, and we paraphrase its content. Its arguments are based on Einstein's belief in the complete analogy between the thermodynamics of light quanta and of material particles and invoke considerations of adiabatic transformations as well as of dimensional analysis. These techniques were well-known to Einstein from earlier work on Wien's displacement law, Planck's radiation theory, and the specific heat of solids.     Step based physical activity guidelines for preschool-aged children

    OBJECTIVE Public health organizations recommend that preschool-aged children accumulate at least 3h of physical activity (PA) daily. Objective monitoring using pedometers offers an opportunity to measure preschooler's PA and assess compliance with this recommendation. The purpose of this study was to derive step-based recommendations consistent with the 3h PA recommendation for preschool-aged children. METHOD The study sample comprised 916 preschool-aged children, aged 3 to 6years (mean age=5.0+/-0.8years). Children were recruited from kindergartens located in Portugal, between 2009 and 2013. Children wore an ActiGraph GT1M accelerometer that measured PA intensity and steps per day simultaneously over a 7-day monitoring period. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to identify the daily step count threshold associated with meeting the daily 3hour PA recommendation. RESULTS A significant correlation was observed between minutes of total PA and steps per day (r=0.76, p/=3h of total PA was 9099 steps per day (sensitivity (90%) and specificity (66%)) with area under the ROC curve=0.86 (95% CI: 0.84 to 0.88).     Does high-dose metformin cause lactic acidosis in type 2 diabetic patients after CABG surgery? A double blind randomized clinical trial

    Metformin is a dimethyl biguanide oral anti-hyperglycemic agent. Lactic acidosis due to metformin is a fatal metabolic condition that limits its use in patients in poor clinical condition, consequently reducing the number of patients who benefit from this medication. In a double blind randomized clinical trial, we investigated 200 type 2 diabetic patients after coronary artery bypass surgery in the open heart ICU of the Mazandaran Heart Center, and randomly assigned them to equal intervention and control groups. The intervention group received regular insulin infusion along with 2 metformin 500 mg tablets every twelve hours, while the control group received only intravenous insulin with 2 placebo tablets every twelve hours. Lactate level, pH, base excess, blood glucose and serum creatinine were measured over five 12 h periods, with data averaged for each period. The primary outcome in this study was high lactate levels. Comparison between the 2 groups was made by independent Student’s t-test. To compare changes in multiple measures in each group and analysis of group interaction, a repeated measurement ANOVA test was used

    Perturbation theory for large Stokes number particles in random velocity fields

    We derive a perturbative approach to study, in the large inertia limit, the dynamics of solid particles in a smooth, incompressible and finite-time correlated random velocity field. We carry on an expansion in powers of the inverse square root of the Stokes number, defined as the ratio of the relaxation time for the particle velocities and the correlation time of the velocity field. We describe in this limit the residual concentration fluctuations of the particle suspension, and determine the contribution to the collision statistics produced by clustering.     The IFITM5 mutation c.-14C > T results in an elongated transcript expressed in human bone; and causes varying phenotypic severity of osteogenesis imperfecta type V

    Background The genetic mutation resulting in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type V was recently characterised as a single point mutation (c.-14C > T) in the 5’ untranslated region (UTR) of IFITM5, a gene encoding a transmembrane protein with expression restricted to skeletal tissue. This mutation creates an alternative start codon and has been shown in a eukaryotic cell line to result in a longer variant of IFITM5, but its expression has not previously been demonstrated in bone from a patient with OI type V. Methods Sanger sequencing of the IFITM5 5’ UTR was performed in our cohort of subjects with a clinical diagnosis of OI type V. Clinical data was collated from referring clinicians. RNA was extracted from a bone sample from one patient and Sanger sequenced to determine expression of wild-type and mutant IFITM5. Results All nine subjects with OI type V were heterozygous for the c.-14C > T IFITM5 mutation. Clinically, there was heterogeneity in phenotype, particularly in the manifestation of bone fragility amongst subjects. Both wild-type and mutant IFITM5 mRNA transcripts were present in bone. Conclusions The c.-14C > T IFITM5 mutation does not result in an RNA-null allele but is expressed in bone. Individuals with identical mutations in IFITM5 have highly variable phenotypic expression, even within the same family
