    Sistemas agropecuários sustentáveis (SAS): uma proposta metodológica para transferência de tecnologias agropecuárias.

    O estudo teve por objetivo desenvolver, testar e implantar metodologias que subsidiem uma nova abordagem de transferência de tecnologias pela Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, pautada na visão do diálogo e da construção coletiva de conhecimentos e na adoção de soluções tecnológicas de base sustentável para a agricultura familiar nos territórios rurais do Estado de Sergipe. A implantação dos Sistemas Agropecuários Sustentáveis atende a cinco diretrizes básicas, sendo elas: implantação em comunidades com baixo acesso a tecnologias; atendimento aos agricultores de base familiar; construção participativa; implantação de culturas variadas e implantação de culturas que realizem enriquecimento dos solos por meio da fixação e ciclagem de nutrientes. Com base nas experiências iniciadas, pode-se concluir que a metodologia tem alcançado alguns dos seus principais objetivos, emonstrando potencial para firmar-se como ferramenta de transferência de tecnologias e estimulando a organização social dos agricultores envolvidos. Uma fase de monitoramento da adoção das tecnologias disponibilizadas está em fase inicial e faz-se necessário para ajustes contínuos.     Experimental perspectives for systems based on long-range interactions

    The possibility of observing phenomena peculiar to long-range interactions, and more specifically in the so-called Quasi-Stationary State (QSS) regime is investigated within the framework of two devices, namely the Free-Electron Laser (FEL) and the Collective Atomic Recoil Laser (CARL). The QSS dynamics has been mostly studied using the Hamiltonian Mean-Field (HMF) toy model, demonstrating in particular the presence of first versus second order phase transitions from magnetized to unmagnetized regimes in the case of HMF. Here, we give evidence of the strong connections between the HMF model and the dynamics of the two mentioned devices, and we discuss the perspectives to observe some specific QSS features experimentally. In particular, a dynamical analog of the phase transition is present in the FEL and in the CARL in its conservative regime. Regarding the dissipative CARL, a formal link is established with the HMF model. For both FEL and CARL, calculations are performed with reference to existing experimental devices, namely the FERMI@Elettra FEL under construction at Sincrotrone Trieste (Italy) and the CARL system at LENS in Florence (Italy)

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa AES-1 exhibits increased virulence gene expression during chronic infection of cystic fibrosis lung

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), adapts for survival in the CF lung through both mutation and gene expression changes. Frequent clonal strains such as the Australian Epidemic Strain-1 (AES-1), have increased ability to establish infection in the CF lung and to superimpose and replace infrequent clonal strains. Little is known about the factors underpinning these properties. Analysis has been hampered by lack of expression array templates containing CF-strain specific genes. We sequenced the genome of an acute infection AES-1 isolate from a CF infant (AES-1R) and constructed a non-redundant micro-array (PANarray) comprising AES-1R and seven other sequenced P. aeruginosa genomes. The unclosed AES-1R genome comprised 6.254Mbp and contained 6957 putative genes, including 338 not found in the other seven genomes. The PANarray contained 12,543 gene probe spots; comprising 12,147 P. aeruginosa gene probes, 326 quality-control probes and 70 probes for non-P. aeruginosa genes, including phage and plant genes. We grew AES-1R and its isogenic pair AES-1M, taken from the same patient 10.5 years later and not eradicated in the intervening period, in our validated artificial sputum medium (ASMDM) and used the PANarray to compare gene expression of both in duplicate. 675 genes were differentially expressed between the isogenic pairs, including upregulation of alginate, biofilm, persistence genes and virulence-related genes such as dihydroorotase, uridylate kinase and cardiolipin synthase, in AES-1M. Non-PAO1 genes upregulated in AES-1M included pathogenesis-related (PAGI-5) genes present in strains PACS2 and PA7, and numerous phage genes.     Responsive Photonic Liquid Marbles

    Liquid marbles have potential to serve as mini-reactors for fabricating new materials, but this has been exploited little and mostly for conventional chemical reactions. Here, we uncover the unparalleled capability of liquid marbles to act as platforms for controlling the self-assembly of a bio-derived polymer, hydroxypropyl cellulose, into a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase showing structural coloration by Bragg reflection. By adjusting the cholesteric pitch via quantitative water extraction, we achieve liquid marbles that we can tailor for structural color anywhere in the visible range. Liquid marbles respond with color change that can be detected by eye, to changes in temperature, exposure to toxic chemicals and mechanical deformation. Our concept demonstrates the advantages of using liquid marbles as a miniature platform for controlling the liquid crystal self-assembly of bio-derived polymers, and their exploitation to fabricate sustainable, responsive soft photonic objects

    Computational Studies on Microreactors for the Decomposition of Formic Acid for Hydrogen Production Using Heterogeneous Catalysts

    Sustainable alternatives to conventional fuels have emerged recently, focusing on a hydrogen-based economy. The idea of using hydrogen (H2) as an energy carrier is very promising due to its zero-emission properties. The present study investigates the formic acid (FA) decomposition for H2 generation using a commercial 5 wt.% Pd/C catalyst. Three different 2D microreactor configurations (packed bed, single membrane, and double membrane) were studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Parameters such as temperature, porosity, concentration, and flow rate of reactant were investigated. The packed bed configuration resulted in high conversions, but due to catalyst poisoning by carbon monoxide (CO), the catalytic activity decreased with time. For the single and double membrane microreactors, the same trends were observed, but the double membrane microreactor showed superior performance compared with the other configurations. Conversions higher than 80% were achieved, and even though deactivation decreased the conversion after 1 h of reaction, the selective removal of CO from the system with the use of membranes lead to an increase in the conversion afterwards. These results prove that the incorporation of membranes in the system for the separation of CO is improving the efficiency of the microreactor

    Fabrication and Sub-Assembly of Electrostatically Actuated Silicon Nitride Microshutter Arrays

    We have developed a new microshutter array (MSA) subassembly. The MSA and a silicon substrate are flip-bonded together. The MSA has a new back side fabrication process to actuate the microshutters electrostatically, and the new silicon substrate has light shields. The microshutters with a pixel size of 100 x 200 sq micrometers are fabricated on silicon with thin silicon nitride membranes. The microshutters rotate 90 deg on torsion bars. The selected microshutters are actuated, held, and addressed electrostatically by applying voltages on the electrodes the front and back sides of the microshutters. The substrate has the light shield to block lights around the microshutters. Also, electrical connections are made from the MSA to a controller board via the substrate

    Operational Wildfire Monitoring and Disaster Management Support Using State-of-the-art EO and Information Technologies

    Fires have been one of the main driving forces in the evolution of plants and ecosystems, determining the current structure and composition of the Landscapes. However, significant alterations in the fire regime have occurred in the recent decades, primarily as a result of socioeconomic changes, increasing dramatically the catastrophic impacts of wildfires as it is reflected in the increase during the 20th century of both, number of fires and the annual area burnt. Therefore, the establishment of a permanent robust fire monitoring system is of paramount importance to implement an effective environmental management policy. Such an integrated system has been developed in the Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens (ISARS/NOA). Volumes of Earth Observation images of different spectral and spatial resolutions are being processed on a systematic basis to derive thematic products that cover a wide spectrum of applications during and after wildfire crisis, from fire detection and fire-front propagation monitoring, to damage assessment in the inflicted areas. The processed satellite imagery is combined with auxiliary geo-information layers and meteorological data to generate and validate added-value fire-related products. The service portfolio has become available to institutional End Users with a mandate to act on natural disasters in the framework of the operational GMES projects SAFER and LinkER addressing fire emergency response and emergency support needs for the entire European Union. Towards the goal of delivering integrated services for fire monitoring and management, ISARS/NOA employs observational capacities which include the operation of MSG/SEVIRI and NOAA/AVHRR receiving stations, NOA’s in-situ monitoring networks for capturing meteorological parameters to generate weather forecasts, and datasets originating from the European Space Agency and third party satellite operators.
