In the present paper, results of the research on application of residual fine-grained, carbon-bearing materials as coke substitutes in the shaft process of copper matter smelting are discussed. The addition was introduced into the charge as a component of concentrate-made briquettes; then, its effects on properties of the obtained briquettes were analysed for their compressive and drop strengths. The results of investigations confirmed the potential use of proposed alternative fuels (as briquette components) in the process of copper matte smelting

QED effects on individual atomic orbital energies

Several issues, concerning QED corrections, that are important in precise atomic calculations are presented. The leading QED corrections, self-energy and vacuum polarization, to the orbital energy for selected atoms with 30 ≤ Z ≤ 118 have been calculated. The sum of QED and Breit contributions to the orbital energy is analyzed. It has been found that for ns subshells the Breit and QED contributions are of comparative size, but for np and nd subshells the Breit contribution takes a major part of the QED+Breit sum. It has also, been found that the Breit to leading QED contributions ratio for ns subshells is almost independent of Z. The Z-dependence of QED and Breit+QED contributions per subshell is shown. The fitting coefficients may be used to estimate QED effects on inner molecular orbitals. We present results of our calculations for QED contributions to orbital energy of valence ns-subshell for group 1 and 11 atoms and discuss about the reliability of these numbers by comparing them with experimental first ionization potential data.Fil: Koziol, Karol. Several issues concerning Breit correction to electron-electron interaction in many-electron systems, which are important in precise atomic and molecular calculations, are presented. At first, perturbative versus self-consistent calculations of Breit correction were studied in selected cases. Second, the Z-dependence of Breit contribution per subshell is shown, based on values calculated for selected atoms with 30 ≤ Z ≤ 118. Third, the relations between magnetic and retardation parts of Breit interaction are analyzed. Finally, Gaunt contribution calculated for Kr, Xe, and Rn noble gas atoms and its iso-electronic HBr, HI, and HAt diatomic molecules has been compared to full-Breit atomic calculations. We found that Breit corrections should be treated by self-consistent calculations and that there is a functional dependence of those corrections for subshells as ϵnlBreit(Z)â‰a×Zb. We also found that molecular Gaunt corrections are close to their atomic counterparts for inner electrons though they are not for outer orbitals. In any case, accurate calculations must include retardation correction in addition to Gaunt.Fil: Koziol, Karol. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Pathological processes that strongly affect the uterine endometrium lead to infertility and abortion. The most common of these pathologies are clinical and subclinical endometritis. Subclinical endometritis is characterized by endometrial inflammation in the absence of clinical signs of endometritis. In this study, we used uterine samples obtained from Ukrainian black-and-white dairy cows aged 4 to 7 years to compare the histology of the uterine endometrium and changes in estrogen-α (ER-α), estrogen-β (ER-β) and progesterone (PgR) nuclear receptor sensitivity in cows with subclinical endometritis. Cows were separated based on cytological examination of the endometrium into a healthy group, or those presenting with subclinical endometritis. From these groups endometrial and epithelial tissue samples were obtained using biopsy forceps and an endoscope then analyzed using immunohistochemistry. Our results demonstrate that the sensitivity of ER-α and ER-β is lower while PgR sensitivity is elevated in cows with subclinical endometritis compared to the healthy control group. Additionally, we observed markedly altered histological changes characterized by enlargement of uterine glands, epithelial desquamation, and infiltration of leukocytes. These results suggest that there are significant changes in the endometrium linked to the sensitivity of nuclear steroid hormone receptors that may also play an immunoregulatory role in cows with subclinical endometriosis. While the interaction of steroid hormones and immunoregulation in the uterus remains to be elucidated, it may provide key insights into the uterine immune response.

In vivo performance of hierarchical HRP-crosslinked silk fibroin/β-TCP scaffolds for osteochondral tissue regeneration

    Get PDF
Background: Osteochondral defects (OCD) can affect the articular cartilage and subchondral bone tissues, which requires superior therapies for the simultaneous and full restoration of such structurally and biologically different tissues. Methods: Tissue engineered OC grafts were prepared using a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) approach to crosslink silk fibroin (HRP-SF) as the articular cartilage-like layer and an underlying HRP-SF/ZnSrTCP subchondral bone-like layer (HRP-SF/dTCP), through salt-leaching/freeze-drying methodologies. In vivo OC regeneration was assessed by implantating the hierarchical scaffolds in rabbit critical size OC defects, during 8 weeks. A comparative analysis was performed using hierarchical OC grafts made of pure β-TCP (HRP-SF/TCP). Results: The hierarchical scaffolds showed good integration into the host tissue and no signs of acute inflammatory reaction, after 8 weeks of implantation. The histological analyses revealed positive collagen type II and glycosaminoglycansâ formation in the articular cartilage-like layer. New bone ingrowthâ s and blood vessels infiltration were detected in the subchondral bone-like layers. Conclusions: The proposed hierarchical scaffolds presented an adequate in vivo response with cartilage tissue regeneration and calcified tissue formation specially promoted by the ionic incorporation into the subchondral bone layer, confirming the hierarchical structures as suitable for OCD regeneration.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology for the Hierarchitech project (M-era-Net/0001/2014), for the fellowships (SFRH/BD/99555/2014) and (SFRH/BPD/101952/2014), and for the distinctions attributed to JMO (IF/01285/2015) and SP (CEECIND/03673/2017). A three-headed piriformis muscle: an anatomical case study and narrative review of literature

    Get PDF
Introduction: The piriformis muscle (PM) is found in the gluteal region, exiting the pelvis through the greater sciatic foramen and dividing it into the suprapiriform and infrapiriform foramina. The piriformis works as part of the hip external rotator muscle group, and is responsible for rotation of the femur upon hip extension and abduction of the femur during flexion of the hip joint. The aim of the present report is to describe a very rare case of the primary three-headed piriformis muscle. To the best knowledge of the authors, the said variant has not yet been described in the existing literature. Case report: The 71-year-old male formalin-fixed cadaver was subjected to routine dissection. After careful removal of the connecting tissue, three separate, primary heads of the PM were identified. The lower head of the PM arose from the middle part of the sacral bone; 87.56 mm long and 9.73 mm wide. The medial head was attached to the internal part of the posterior inferior iliac spine; 121.6 mm long and 20.97 mm wide. The upper head was attached to the external part of the posterior inferior iliac spine; 78.89 mm long and 23.94 mm wide. All heads converged into a common tendon which inserted onto the greater trochanter. Conclusions: The clinical importance of this work comes down to the fact that the aberrant PM may be the reason behind the piriformis syndrome and its associated symptoms. Moreover, knowledge regarding the variant anatomy of the PM is of immense importance to, e.g., anesthesiologists performing CT- or ultrasound-guided SN injection for local anesthesia, radiologists interpreting imaging studies, and surgeons, especially during posterior approaches to the hip and pelvis

Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other regions/countries
