Environmental Dependence of the Structure of Brightest Cluster Galaxies
We measure the Petrosian structural properties of 33 brightest cluster
galaxies (BCGs) at redshifts z<0.1 in X-ray selected clusters with a wide range
of X-ray luminosities. We find that some BCGs show distinct signatures in their
Petrosian profiles, likely to be due to cD haloes. We also find that BCGs in
high X-ray luminosity clusters have shallower surface brightness profiles than
those in low X-ray luminosity clusters. This suggests that the BCGs in high
X-ray luminosity clusters have undergone up to twice as many equal-mass mergers
in their past as those in low X-ray luminosity clusters. This is qualitatively
consistent with the predictions of hierarchical structure formation.Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA
Investigating knowledge management factors affecting Chinese ICT firms performance: An integrated KM framework

Interpersonal and affective dimensions of psychopathic traits in adolescents : development and validation of a self-report instrument
We report the development and psychometric evaluations of a self-report instrument designed to screen for psychopathic traits among mainstream community adolescents. Tests of item functioning were initially conducted with 26 adolescents. In a second study the new instrument was administered to 150 high school adolescents, 73 of who had school records of suspension for antisocial behavior. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 4-factor structure (Impulsivity α = .73, Self-Centredness α = .70, Callous-Unemotional α = .69, and Manipulativeness α = .83). In a third study involving 328 high school adolescents, 130 with records of suspension for antisocial behaviour, competing measurement models were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. The superiority of a first-order model represented by four correlated factors that was invariant across gender and age was confirmed. The findings provide researchers and clinicians with a psychometrically strong, self-report instrument and a greater understanding of psychopathic traits in mainstream adolescents
In vitro and ex vivo testing of tenofovir shows it is effective as an HIV-1 microbicide
Background: Tenofovir gel has entered into clinical trials for use as a topical microbicide to prevent HIV-1 infection but has no published data regarding pre-clinical testing using in vitro and ex vivo models. To validate our findings with on-going clinical trial results, we evaluated topical tenofovir gel for safety and efficacy. We also modeled systemic application of tenofovir for efficacy. Methods and Findings: Formulation assessment of tenofovir gel included osmolality, viscosity, in vitro release, and permeability testing. Safety was evaluated by measuring the effect on the viability of vaginal flora, PBMCs, epithelial cells, and ectocervical and colorectal explant tissues. For efficacy testing, PBMCs were cultured with tenofovir or vehicle control gels and HIV-1 representing subtypes A, B, and C. Additionally, polarized ectocervical and colorectal explant cultures were treated apically with either gel. Tenofovir was added basolaterally to simulate systemic application. All tissues were challenged with HIV-1 applied apically. Infection was assessed by measuring p24 by ELISA on collected supernatants and immunohisto-chemistry for ectocervical explants. Formulation testing showed the tenofovir and vehicle control gels were >10 times isosmolar. Permeability through ectocervical tissue was variable but in all cases the receptor compartment drug concentration reached levels that inhibit HIV-1 infection in vitro. The gels were non-toxic toward vaginal flora, PBMCs, or epithelial cells. A transient reduction in epithelial monolayer integrity and epithelial fracture for ectocervical and colorectal explants was noted and likely due to the hyperosmolar nature of the formulation. Tenofovir gel prevented HIV-1 infection of PBMCs regardless of HIV-1 subtype. Topical and systemic tenofovir were effective at preventing HIV-1 infection of explant cultures. Conclusions: These studies provide a mechanism for pre-clinical prediction of safety and efficacy of formulated microbicides. Tenofovir was effective against HIV-1 infection in our algorithm. These data support the use of tenofovir for pre-exposure prophylaxis. © 2010 Rohan et al
Silver–N-heterocyclic carbenes in π–Activation: Synergistic effects between the ligand ring size and the anion
A series of 12 silver(I)–N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes were prepared featuring five- (both saturated and unsaturated backbone), six-, and seven-membered ring ligand scaffolds. The N-substituents of the NHCs were diisopropylphenyl in all cases, while the anion was varied between bromide, acetate, and triflate. The complexes were evaluated as catalysts in the spirocyclization of 1-(1H-indol-3-yl)-4-phenylbut-3-yn-2-one to give a spirocyclic indolenine product. To our knowledge, it is the first time that a systematic study has been conducted to examine the effects of both NHC ring size and anion in this type of silver-catalyzed reaction. While the acetate and triflate complexes catalyzed the reaction to 100% conversion, the bromide complexes exhibited a significant ligand/anion effect. Reactions catalyzed by both complexes bearing the five-membered ring NHC ligands and the complex bearing the seven-membered ring NHC ligand stalled after approximately two turnovers. However, the bromide complex bearing the six-membered ring NHC ligand catalyzes the reaction to almost full conversion, similarly to the acetate and triflate complexes. This demonstrates that the NHC ligand ring size can have a dramatic effect in these types of reactions and does not necessarily display a linear correlation
Biomass of Scyphozoan Jellyfish, and Its Spatial Association with 0-Group Fish in the Barents Sea
An 0-group fish survey is conducted annually in the Barents Sea in order to estimate fish population abundance. Data on jellyfish by-catch have been recorded since 1980, although this dataset has never been analysed. In recent years, however, the ecological importance of jellyfish medusae has become widely recognized. In this paper the biomass of jellyfish (medusae) in 0–60 m depths is calculated for the period 1980–2010. During this period the climate changed from cold to warm, and changes in zooplankton and fish distribution and abundance were observed. This paper discusses the less well known ecosystem component; jellyfish medusae within the Phylum Cnidaria, and their spatial and temporal variation. The long term average was ca. 9×108 kg, with some years showing biomasses in excess of 5×109 kg. The biomasses were low during 1980s, increased during 1990s, and were highest in early 2000s with a subsequent decline. The bulk of the jellyfish were observed in the central parts of the Barents Sea, which is a core area for most 0-group fishes. Jellyfish were associated with haddock in the western area, with haddock and herring in the central and coastal area, and with capelin in the northern area of the Barents Sea. The jellyfish were present in the temperature interval 1°C<T<10°C, with peak densities at ca. 5.5°C, and the greatest proportion of the jellyfish occurring between 4.0–7.0°C. It seems that the ongoing warming trend may be favourable for Barents Sea jellyfish medusae; however their biomass has showed a recent moderate decline during years with record high temperatures in the Barents Sea. Jellyfish are undoubtedly an important component of the Barents Sea ecosystem, and the data presented here represent the best summary of jellyfish biomass and distribution yet published for the region
How to Adapt to Changing Markets: Experience and Personality in a Repeated Investment Game
Investment behavior is traditionally investigated with the assumption that it is on average advantageous to invest. However, this may not always be the case. In this paper, we experimentally studied investment choices made by students and financial professionals facing alternately an advantageous and disadvantageous environment in a multi-round investment game. Expected returns from investment in the advantageous environment were higher than a safe alternative, while expected returns were lower in the disadvantageous environment.
We investigate how experience and personality are related to choices. Investment behavior does not differ dependent on expected returns and professionals do not significantly differ from students. Personality predicts behavior and in particular we observe that openness to experience was an asset in unfavorable markets, leading to reduced risk taking
Which executive functioning deficits are associated with AD/HD, ODD/CD and comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD?
Item does not contain fulltextThis study investigated (1) whether attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is associated with executive functioning (EF) deficits while controlling for oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD), (2) whether ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits while controlling for AD/HD, and (3)~whether a combination of AD/HD and ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits (and the possibility that there is no association between EF deficits and AD/HD or ODD/CD in isolation). Subjects were 99~children ages 6–12 years. Three putative domains of EF were investigated using well-validated tests: verbal fluency, working memory, and planning. Independent of ODD/CD, AD/HD was associated with deficits in planning and working memory, but not in verbal fluency. Only teacher rated AD/HD, but not parent rated AD/HD, significantly contributed to the prediction of EF task performance. No EF deficits were associated with ODD/CD. The presence of comorbid AD/HD accounts for the EF deficits in children with comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD. These results suggest that EF deficits are unique to AD/HD and support the model proposed by R. A.
