On right conjugacy closed loops of twice prime order
The right conjugacy closed loops of order 2p, where p is an odd prime, are
classified up to isomorphism.Comment: Clarified definitions, added some remarks and a tabl
A Census Of Highly Symmetric Combinatorial Designs
As a consequence of the classification of the finite simple groups, it has
been possible in recent years to characterize Steiner t-designs, that is
t-(v,k,1) designs, mainly for t = 2, admitting groups of automorphisms with
sufficiently strong symmetry properties. However, despite the finite simple
group classification, for Steiner t-designs with t > 2 most of these
characterizations have remained longstanding challenging problems. Especially,
the determination of all flag-transitive Steiner t-designs with 2 < t < 7 is of
particular interest and has been open for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 147] and
[12, p. 273], but presumably dating back to 1965). The present paper continues
the author's work [20, 21, 22] of classifying all flag-transitive Steiner
3-designs and 4-designs. We give a complete classification of all
flag-transitive Steiner 5-designs and prove furthermore that there are no
non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-designs. Both results rely on the
classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups. Moreover, we
survey some of the most general results on highly symmetric Steiner t-designs.Comment: 26 pages; to appear in: "Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics
Additive Polynomials for Finite Groups of Lie Type
This paper provides a realization of all classical and most exceptional
finite groups of Lie type as Galois groups over function fields over F_q and
derives explicit additive polynomials for the extensions. Our unified approach
is based on results of Matzat which give bounds for Galois groups of Frobenius
modules and uses the structure and representation theory of the corresponding
connected linear algebraic groups.Comment: 59 pages; v2: added reference, slightly restructured section 6.1, few
small rewordings; v3: completed realization of Steinberg's triality groups
(thanks to P. Mueller for solving the remaining open question); clarified
argument how to use Thm. 3.
Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and jacobians
We construct absolutely simple jacobians of non-hyperelliptic genus 4 curves,
using Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. This paper is a natural continuation of
author's paper math.AG/0405156.Comment: 24 page
Hemisystems of small flock generalized quadrangles
In this paper, we describe a complete computer classification of the
hemisystems in the two known flock generalized quadrangles of order
and give numerous further examples of hemisystems in all the known flock
generalized quadrangles of order for . By analysing the
computational data, we identify two possible new infinite families of
hemisystems in the classical generalized quadrangle .Comment: slight revisions made following referee's reports, and included raw

Maritime Aerosol Network as a Component of AERONET - First Results and Comparison with Global Aerosol Models and Satellite Retrievals
The Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) has been collecting data over the oceans since November 2006. Over 80 cruises were completed through early 2010 with deployments continuing. Measurement areas included various parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Northern and Southern Pacific Ocean, the South Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and inland seas. MAN deploys Microtops handheld sunphotometers and utilizes a calibration procedure and data processing traceable to AERONET. Data collection included areas that previously had no aerosol optical depth (AOD) coverage at all, particularly vast areas of the Southern Ocean. The MAN data archive provides a valuable resource for aerosol studies in maritime environments. In the current paper we present results of AOD measurements over the oceans, and make a comparison with satellite AOD retrievals and model simulations
Precision requirements for space-based XCO2 data

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 112 (2007): D10314, doi:10.1029/2006JD007659.Precision requirements are determined for space-based column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction (XCO2) data. These requirements result from an assessment of spatial and temporal gradients in XCO2, the relationship between XCO2 precision and surface CO2 flux uncertainties inferred from inversions of the XCO2 data, and the effects of XCO2 biases on the fidelity of CO2 flux inversions. Observational system simulation experiments and synthesis inversion modeling demonstrate that the Orbiting Carbon Observatory mission design and sampling strategy provide the means to achieve these XCO2 data precision requirements. This work was supported by the Orbiting
