    Full-Range Approximation for the Theis Well Function Using Ramanujan's Series and Bounds for the Exponential Integral

    The solution of the governing equation representing the drawdown in a horizontal confined aquifer, where groundwater flow is unsteady, is provided in terms of the exponential integral, which is famously known as the Well function. For the computation of this function in practical applications, it is important to develop not only accurate but also a simple approximation that requires evaluation of the fewest possible terms. To that end, introducing Ramanujan's series expression, this work proposes a full-range approximation to the exponential integral using Ramanujan's series for the small argument (u \leq 1) and an approximation based on the bound of the integral for the other range (u \in (1,100]). The evaluation of the proposed approximation results in the most accurate formulae compared to the existing studies, which possess the maximum percentage error of 0.05\%. Further, the proposed formula is much simpler to apply as it contains just the product of exponential and logarithm functions. To further check the efficiency of the proposed approximation, we consider a practical example for evaluating the discrete pumping kernel, which shows the superiority of this approximation over the others.     Estimation of TFP growth:a semiparametric smooth coefficient approach

    This article uses a semiparametric smooth coefficient model (SPSCM) to estimate TFP growth and its components (scale and technical change). The SPSCM is derived from a nonparametric specification of the production technology represented by an input distance function (IDF), using a growth formulation. The functional coefficients of the SPSCM come naturally from the model and are fully flexible in the sense that no functional form of the underlying production technology is used to derive them. Another advantage of the SPSCM is that it can estimate bias (input and scale) in technical change in a fully flexible manner. We also used a translog IDF framework to estimate TFP growth components. A panel of U.S. electricity generating plants for the period 1986–1998 is used for this purpose. Comparing estimated TFP growth results from both parametric and semiparametric models against the Divisia TFP growth, we conclude that the SPSCM performs the best in tracking the temporal behavior of TFP growth

    Assessing the efficiency of maintenance operators: a case study of turning railway wheelsets on an under-floor wheel lathe

    The present paper assesses the technical efficiency of different operators turning railway wheelsets on a under-floor wheel lathe. This type of lathe is a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine used to turn wheelsets in-situ on the train. As railway wheels are turned, a certain amount of the wheel diameter is lost to restore the tread profile and full flange thickness of the wheel. The technical efficiencies of the different wheel lathe operators are assessed using a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), whilst controlling for other explaining variables such as the flange thickness and the occurrence of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) defects, wheel flats and cavities. Different model specifications for the SFA are compared with Linear Mixed Model (LMM) specifications, showing that the SFA model exhibits a better Akaike Information Criterion (AIC)

    Estimation and inference under economic restrictions

    Estimation of economic relationships often requires imposition of constraints such as positivity or monotonicity on each observation. Methods to impose such constraints, however, vary depending upon the estimation technique employed. We describe a general methodology to impose (observation-specific) constraints for the class of linear regression estimators using a method known as constraint weighted bootstrapping. While this method has received attention in the nonparametric regression literature, we show how it can be applied for both parametric and nonparametric estimators. A benefit of this method is that imposing numerous constraints simultaneously can be performed seamlessly. We apply this method to Norwegian dairy farm data to estimate both unconstrained and constrained parametric and nonparametric models

    Measuring productivity and efficiency: a Kalman filter approach

    In the Kalman filter setting, one can model the inefficiency term of the standard stochastic frontier composed error as an unobserved state. In this study a panel data version of the local level model is used for estimating time-varying efficiencies of firms. We apply the Kalman filter to estimate average efficiencies of U.S. airlines and find that the technical efficiency of these carriers did not improve during the period 1999-2009. During this period the industry incurred substantial losses, and the efficiency gains from reorganized networks, code-sharing arrangements, and other best business practices apparently had already been realized

    Purification and Activity Testing of the Full-Length YycFGHI Proteins of Staphylococcus aureus

    Background: The YycFG two-component regulatory system (TCS) of Staphylococcus aureus represents the only essential TCS that is almost ubiquitously distributed in Gram-positive bacteria with a low G+C-content. YycG (WalK/VicK) is a sensor histidine-kinase and YycF (WalR/VicR) is the cognate response regulator. Both proteins play an important role in the biosynthesis of the cell envelope and mutations in these proteins have been involved in development of vancomycin and daptomycin resistance. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we present high yield expression and purification of the full-length YycG and YycF proteins as well as of the auxiliary proteins YycH and YycI of Staphylococcus aureus. Activity tests of the YycG kinase and a mutated version, that harbours an Y306N exchange in its cytoplasmic PAS domain, in a detergent-micelle-model and a phosholipid-liposome-model showed kinase activity (autophosphorylation and phosphoryl group transfer to YycF) only in the presence of elevated concentrations of alkali salts. A direct comparison of the activity of the kinases in the liposomemodel indicated a higher activity of the mutated YycG kinase. Further experiments indicated that YycG responds to fluidity changes in its microenvironment.     Using data envelopment analysis to support the design of process improvement interventions in electricity distribution

    A significant number of studies have documented the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for efficiency measurement in the context of electricity distribution, particularly at the level of the distribution utilities. However, their aim has been predominantly descriptive and classificatory, without any attempt to ‘open’ the black box of the transformation process. In contrast, our aim is to explore the potential of DEA to contribute to the design of effective process improvement interventions within a distribution utility. In particular, in this paper, we study an important question within the context of DEA analysis: that is, to investigate whether differences in efficiency can be attributed to a particular managerial programme or design feature. We use two different methodologies to undertake this type of analysis. Firstly, we apply Mann–Whitney rank statistics to the scores obtained from DEA in order to evaluate the statistical significance of the differences observed between an intervention programme and its control group programme. Secondly, we undertake dynamic analysis with the Malmquist Productivity Index in order to study the impact of the introduction of a new technology on a group of units. Our case study focuses on the performance evaluation of medium-voltage power lines belonging to one of the service areas in the Public Electricity Distribution System in Portugal. The results from our case study show that the application of DEA for process improvement interventions has great potential and should be explored in other contexts
