    Non-collinearity in di-jet fragmentation in electron-positron scattering

    We study fragmentation in electron-positron annihilation assuming a di-jet situation, using variables defined independent of any frame. In a collinear situation some of the variables are centered around zero with the small deviations attributed to intrinsic transverse momenta and large deviations attributed to additional hard subprocesses. Of course there is a gradual transition. Our modest goal is to show that covariantly defined variables are well suited to get a feeling for the magnitude of intrinsic transverse momenta.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, several minor correction

    The development of a high temperature static strain gage system

    The objective of this program is to develop electrical resistance strain gages which will permit the measurement of static strains on nickel and cobalt superalloy parts inside gas turbine engines running on a test stand. The specific goal is to develop a complete system able to make strain measurements up to plus or minus 2000 mu strain with a total error of no more than plus or minus 10 percent over a 50 hour period at 1250 K. The initial part of this work consisted of a strain gage alloy development effort in which a variety of alloys were evaluated after being prepared by drop-casting or splat cooling

    Evidence of Songbird Intoxication From Rozol Application at a Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colony

    Concerns about avian poisonings from anticoagulant rodenticides have traditionally focused on secondary poisoning of raptors exposed by feeding on contaminated mammalian prey. However, ground foraging songbirds can be directly poisoned from operational applications of the anticoagulant rodenticide RozolH (0.005% chlorophacinone, active ingredient) applied as a grain bait, at black-tailed prairie dog Cynomys ludovicianus colonies. A dead western meadowlark Sturnella neglecta recovered from the study prairie dog colony displayed hemorrhaging in brain and pectoral muscle tissue, and it contained chlorophacinone residue concentrations of 0.59 and 0.49 mg/g (wet weight) in the liver and intestinal contents, respectively. Chlorophacinone residues from two Rozol-colored songbird droppings found at the study colony were 0.09 and 0.46 mg/g (wet weight). The timing of the meadowlark mortality and the occurrence of discolored droppings show that songbird exposure and poisoning can occur weeks after a Rozol application

    High temperature static strain gage development contract, tasks 1 and 2

    Results are presented for the first two tasks to develop resistive strain gage systems for use up to 1250 K on blades and vanes in gas turbine engines under tests. The objective of these two tasks was to further improve and evaluate two static strain gage alloys identified as candidates in a previous program. Improved compositions were not found for either alloy. Further efforts on the Fe-11.9Al-10.6Cr weigth percent alloy were discontinued because of time dependent drift problems at 1250 K in air. When produced as a 6.5 micrometer thick sputtered film, the Pd-13Cr weight percent alloys is not sufficiently stable for this use in air at 1250 K and a protective overcoat system will need to be developed

Significant variations in the optical properties are observed over periods of exposure up to 100 hours. Models are proposed to predict the 10.6 micrometer absorptivity for long exposure periods.     The neuropeptide galanin is widely expressed in the nervous system and has an important role in nociception. It has been shown that galanin can facilitate and inhibit nociception in a dose-dependent manner, principally through the central nervous system, with enhanced antinociceptive actions after nerve injury. However, following nerve injury, expression of galanin within the peripheral nervous system is dramatically increased up to 120-fold. Despite this striking increase in the peripheral nervous system, few studies have investigated the role that galanin plays in modulating nociception at the primary afferent nociceptor. Here, we summarise the recent work supporting the role of peripherally expressed galanin with particular reference to the dual actions of the galanin receptor 2 in neuropathic pain highlighting this as a potential target analgesic

    Methods to Isolate Possible Bacteriophage for Micrococcus Luteus and Acinetobacter Baumannii

    The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria has led to a crisis in treatment options. Acinetobacter baumannii is an example of a bacterium that has developed a dangerous level of multidrug resistance. Not only does it have genes allowing for the resistance to antibiotics, but it also produces a biofilm that protects it. In recent years, A. baumannii has become a major contributor to nosocomial infections making it critical to develop new treatment methods. Micrococcus luteus, while typically not thought of as a pathogen, is also developing a resistance to antibiotics. M. luteus is capable of forming a biofilm on its own making it worrisome as it has increasingly been noted as an opportunistic pathogen. One potential new treatment of antibiotic resistance is the development of bacteriophage therapy, using bacterial viruses to target the infection and treat it. This study examines methods for isolating novel bacteriophage from dairy cattle feces, specifically for the biofilm producers A. baumannii and M. luteus

    Advanced high temperature static strain sensor development

    An examination was made into various techniques to be used to measure static strain in gas turbine liners at temperatures up to 1150 K (1600 F). The methods evaluated included thin film and wire resistive devices, optical fibers, surface acoustic waves, the laser speckle technique with a heterodyne readout, optical surface image and reflective approaches and capacitive devices. A preliminary experimental program to develop a thin film capacitive device was dropped because calculations showed that it would be too sensitive to thermal gradients. In a final evaluation program, the laser speckle technique appeared to work well up to 1150 K when it was used through a relatively stagnant air path. The surface guided acoustic wave approach appeared to be interesting but to require too much development effort for the funds available. Efforts to develop a FeCrAl resistive strain gage system were only partially successful and this part of the effort was finally reduced to a characterization study of the properties of the 25 micron diameter FeCrAl (Kanthal A-1) wire. It was concluded that this particular alloy was not suitable for use as the resistive element in a strain gage above about 1000 K
