Symmetry analysis of magneto-optical effects: The case of x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption at the transition metal L23 edge
A general symmetry analysis of the optical conductivity or scattering tensor
is used to rewrite the conductivity tensor as a sum of fundamental spectra
multiplied by simple functions depending on the local magnetization direction.
Using this formalism, we present several numerical examples at the transition
metal L23 edge. From these numerical calculations we can conclude that large
deviations from the magneto-optical effects in spherical symmetry are found.
These findings are in particular important for resonant x-ray diffraction
experiments where the polarization dependence and azimuthal dependence of the
scattered Bragg intensity is used to determine the local ordered magnetization
direction
High-density speckle contrast optical tomography (SCOT) for three dimensional tomographic imaging of the small animal brain
High-density speckle contrast optical tomography (SCOT) utilizing tens of thousands of source-detector pairs, was developed for in vivo imaging of blood flow in small animals. The reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF) due to local ischemic stroke in a mouse brain was transcanially imaged and reconstructed in three dimensions. The reconstructed volume was then compared with corresponding magnetic resonance images demonstrating that the volume of reduced CBF agrees with the infarct zone at twenty-four hours.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Correlation effects in CaCu3Ru4O12
We have investigated the electronic structure of CaCu3Ru4O12 and LaCu3Ru4O12
using soft x-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy together with band
structure and cluster configuration interaction calculations. We found the Cu
to be in a robust divalent ionic state while the Ru is more itinerant in
character and stabilizes the metallic state. Substitution of Ca by La
predominantly affects the Ru states. We observed strong correlation effects in
the Cu 3d states affecting the valence band line shape considerably. Using
resonant photoelectron spectroscopy at the Cu L3 edge we were able to unveil
the position of the Zhang-Rice singlet states in the one-electron removal
spectrum of the Cu with respect to the Ru-derived metallic bands in the
vicinity of the chemical potential
Laser scanning microscopy of guided vortex flow in microstructured high-Tc films
We report the visualization of guidance of vortices by artificial microholes (antidots) in superconducting thin films using a low-temperature laser scanning microscope. Previously, guided motion of vortices via tilted rows of antidots in YBa2Cu3O7 films was detected indirectly by using resistive Hall-type measurements. Here we prove that vortices are steered between antidots into a priori chosen direction by imaging of resistive photoresponse with a spatial resolution down to about 1 mu m. We observe predominant paths for vortex motion. Vortices are nucleated and annihilated at antidots, i.e., antidots define starting and ending points of predominant vortex paths. Depending on the misorientation angle between rows of antidots and the current-driven direction of vortex motion, different channels dominate in antidot-guided vortex motion. Our experimental results can be explained by the n-channel model. Finally, we present direct measurements of the local critical currents. Gravitational Properties of Monopole Spacetimes Near the Black Hole Threshold
Although nonsingular spacetimes and those containing black holes are
qualitatively quite different, there are continuous families of configurations
that connect the two. In this paper we use self-gravitating monopole solutions
as tools for investigating the transition between these two types of
spacetimes. We show how causally distinct regions emerge as the black hole
limit is achieved, even though the measurements made by an external observer
vary continuously. We find that near-critical solutions have a naturally
defined entropy, despite the absence of a true horizon, and that this has a
clear connection with the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy. We find that certain
classes of near-critical solutions display naked black hole behavior, although
they are not truly black holes at all. Finally, we present a numerical
simulation illustrating how an incident pulse of matter can induce the
dynamical collapse of a monopole into an extremal black hole. We discuss the

Differences in intestinal size, structure, and function contributing to feed efficiency in broiler chickens reared at geographically distant locations
The contribution of the intestinal tract to differences in residual feed intake (RFI) has been inconclusively studied in chickens so far. It is also not clear if RFI-related differences in intestinal function are similar in chickens raised in different environments. The objective was to investigate differences in nutrient retention, visceral organ size, intestinal morphology, jejunal permeability and expression of genes related to barrier function, and innate immune response in chickens of diverging RFI raised at 2 locations (L1: Austria; L2: UK). The experimental protocol was similar, and the same dietary formulation was fed at the 2 locations. Individual BW and feed intake (FI) of chickens (Cobb 500FF) were recorded from d 7 of life. At 5 wk of life, chickens (L1, n = 157; L2 = 192) were ranked according to their RFI, and low, medium, and high RFI chickens were selected (n = 9/RFI group, sex, and location). RFI values were similar between locations within the same RFI group and increased by 446 and 464 g from low to high RFI in females and males, respectively. Location, but not RFI rank, affected growth, nutrient retention, size of the intestine, and jejunal disaccharidase activity. Chickens from L2 had lower total body weight gain and mucosal enzyme activity but higher nutrient retention and longer intestines than chickens at L1. Parameters determined only at L1 showed increased crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum and enhanced paracellular permeability in low vs. high RFI females. Jejunal expression of IL1B was lower in low vs. high RFI females at L2, whereas that of TLR4 at L1 and MCT1 at both locations was higher in low vs. high RFI males. Correlation analysis between intestinal parameters and feed efficiency metrics indicated that feed conversion ratio was more correlated to intestinal size and function than was RFI. In conclusion, the rearing environment greatly affected intestinal size and function, thereby contributing to the variation in chicken RFI observed across locations
Effect of helium pre- or postconditioning on signal transduction kinases in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery
Background: The noble gas helium induces pre- and postconditioning in animals and humans. Volatile anesthetics induce cardioprotection in humans undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. We hypothesized that helium induces pre-and postconditioning in CABG-patients, affecting signaling molecules protein kinase C-epsilon (PKC-epsilon), p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK-1/2) and heat shock protein 27 (HSP-27) within cardiac tissue, and reducing postoperative troponin levels.
Methods: After ethical approval and informed consent, 125 elective patients undergoing CABG surgery were randomised into this prospective, placebo controlled, investigator blinded, parallel arm single-centre study. Helium preconditioning (3 x 5 min of 70 % helium and 30 % oxygen) was applied before aortic cross clamping; postconditioning (15 min of helium) was applied before release of the aortic cross clamp. Signaling molecules were measured in right atrial appendix specimens. Troponin-T was measured at 4, 12, 24 and 48 h postoperatively.
Results: Baseline characteristics of all groups were similar. Helium preconditioning did not significantly alter the primary outcome (molecular levels of kinases PKC-e and HSP-27, ratio of activated p38 MAPK or ERK 1/2). Postoperative troponin T was 11 arbitrary units [5, 31; area-under-the-curve (interquartile range)] for controls, and no statistically significant changes were observed after helium preconditioning [He-pre: 11 (6, 18)], helium postconditioning [He-post: 11 (8, 15)], helium pre-and postconditioning [He-PP: 14 (6, 20)] and after sevoflurane preconditioning [APC: 12 (8, 24), p = 0.13]. No adverse effects related to study treatment were observed in this study.
Conclusions: No effect was observed of helium preconditioning, postconditioning or the combination thereof on activation of p38 MAPK, ERK 1/2 or levels of HSP27 and PKC-e in the human heart. Helium pre-and postconditioning did not affect postoperative troponin release in patients undergoing CABG surgery
H2 as a fuel for flavin- and H2O2-dependent biocatalytic reactions
The soluble hydrogenase from Ralstonia eutropha provides an atom efficient regeneration system for reduced flavin cofactors using H2 as an electron source. We demonstrated this system for highly selective ene-reductase-catalyzed C[double bond, length as m-dash]C-double bond reductions and monooxygenase-catalyzed epoxidation. Dyonic Non-Abelian Black Holes
We study static spherically symmetric dyonic black holes in
Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. As for the magnetic non-abelian black holes,
the domain of existence of the dyonic non-abelian black holes is limited with
respect to the horizon radius and the dimensionless coupling constant ,
which is proportional to the ratio of vector meson mass and Planck mass. At a
certain critical value of this coupling constant, , the maximal
horizon radius is attained. We derive analytically a relation between and the charge of the black hole solutions and confirm this relation
numerically. Besides the fundamental dyonic non-abelian black holes, we study
radially excited dyonic non-abelian black holes and globally regular
