Statistical Complexity and Nontrivial Collective Behavior in Electroencephalografic Signals
We calculate a measure of statistical complexity from the global dynamics of
electroencephalographic (EEG) signals from healthy subjects and epileptic
patients, and are able to stablish a criterion to characterize the collective
behavior in both groups of individuals. It is found that the collective
dynamics of EEG signals possess relative higher values of complexity for
healthy subjects in comparison to that for epileptic patients. To interpret
these results, we propose a model of a network of coupled chaotic maps where we
calculate the complexity as a function of a parameter and relate this measure
with the emergence of nontrivial collective behavior in the system. Our results
show that the presence of nontrivial collective behavior is associated to high
values of complexity; thus suggesting that similar dynamical collective process
may take place in the human brain. Our findings also suggest that epilepsy is a
degenerative illness related to the loss of complexity in the brain.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
The Cytocompatibility of Silver Diamine Fluoride on Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Human Exfoliated Deciduous Teeth : An In Vitro Study
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been used for many years for the treatment of caries, and minimally invasive dentistry concepts have made it popular again. The fact that its application does not require the administration of anesthesia makes its use in children more desirable. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxicity of two new commercial SDF products: Riva Star (SDI Dental Limited) and e-SDF (Kids-e-Dental) on mesenchymal stromal cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs). SHEDs were exposed to SDF products at different concentrations (0.1%, 0.01% and 0.005%). Then different assays were performed to evaluate their cytocompatibility on SHEDs: IC50, MTT, cell migration (wound healing), cell cytoskeleton staining, cell apoptosis, generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ion chromatography. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (p < 0.05). Riva Star Step 2 showed the same cell metabolic activity when compared to the control condition at any time and concentration. Meanwhile, e-SDF displayed high cytotoxicity at any time and any concentration (*** p < 0.001), whereas Riva Star Step 1 displayed high cytotoxicity at any time at 0.1% and 0.01% (*** p < 0.001). Only e-SDF showed a statistically significant decreased cell migration rate (*** p < 0.001) at all times and in all concentrations. At 0.1%, e-SDF and Riva Star Step 1 only showed 4.37% and 4.47% of viable cells, respectively. These results suggest that Riva Star has better in vitro cytocompatibility on SHEDs than does e-SDF. Riva Star Step 1 was found to be as cytotoxic as e-SDF, but it had better biological properties when mixed with Riva Star Step 2. Our findings suggest that Riva Star is more suitable when used in deciduous teeth due to its lower cytotoxicity compared to e-SDF
Flow networks: A characterization of geophysical fluid transport
We represent transport between different regions of a fluid domain by flow
networks, constructed from the discrete representation of the Perron-Frobenius
or transfer operator associated to the fluid advection dynamics. The procedure
is useful to analyze fluid dynamics in geophysical contexts, as illustrated by
the construction of a flow network associated to the surface circulation in the
Mediterranean sea. We use network-theory tools to analyze the flow network and
gain insights into transport processes. In particular we quantitatively relate
dispersion and mixing characteristics, classically quantified by Lyapunov
exponents, to the degree of the network nodes. A family of network entropies is
defined from the network adjacency matrix, and related to the statistics of
stretching in the fluid, in particular to the Lyapunov exponent field. Finally
we use a network community detection algorithm, Infomap, to partition the
Mediterranean network into coherent regions, i.e. areas internally well mixed,
but with little fluid interchange between them.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. v2: published versio
Epidemiology of injuries in professional and amateur spanish paddle players
We sought to analyse the incidence and features of injuries sustained by professional and non-professional Spanish Padel players. In total, 478 injuries were registered in 2016 from January 1st to December 31st. We collected data on the number of injuries, the most frequent injuries, their distribution, type, location, the moment at which these occurred and the cause of the injuries affecting the locomotor system. We found that the injury rate in this population was 2.75 injuries per 1000 hours of risk exposure. The most frequent injuries were those which were mild or with mechanisms of intrinsic injury, and most occurred towards the end any given game or practice. The lower limb was the most frequently injured body area, and the most injured tissue was the muscle-tendinous system. In turn, epicondylitis was the most common patholog
Determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa-Cabibbo matrix element V_{us} under various flavor-symmetry-breaking models in hyperon semileptonic decays
We study the success to describe hyperon semileptonic decays of four models
that incorporate second-order SU(3) symmetry breaking corrections. The criteria
to assess their success is by determining V_{us} in each of the three relevant
hyperon semileptonic decays and comparing the values obtained with one another
and also with the one that comes from K_{l3} decays. A strong dependence on the
particular symmetry breaking model is observed. Values of V_{us} which do not
agree with the one of K_{l3} are generally obtained. However, in the context of
chiral perturbation theory, only the model whose corrections are O(m_s) and
O(m_s^{3/2}) is successful. Using its predictions for the f_1 form factors one
can quote a value of V_{us} from this model, namely, V_{us}=0.2176\pm 0.0026,
which is in excellent agreement with the K_{l3} one.Comment: Final versio
