Reshaping Mirrors: Mothers and Daughters in Contemporary Irish and Galician Women’s Poetry

Among the great plurality and variety of women`s voices that can be heard both in Irish and Galician women¿s poetry, I have focused my attention on those with whom I identify, because some of them belong to a generation of women who were brought up in a patriarchal-dictatorial society and have had to struggle hard to get rid of all the oppressive ideological structures that subdued women¿s lives, so that they could find their way into a professional career without renouncing to motherhood

Alterations in respiratory function test three months after hospitalisation for covid-19 pneumonia: Value of determining nitric oxide diffusion

Three to four months after hospitalisation for COVID-19 pneumonia, the most frequently described alteration in respiratory function tests (RFTs) is decreased carbon monoxide transfer capacity (DLCO). Methods: This is a prospective cohort study that included patients hospitalised because of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, three months after their discharge. A clinical evaluation, analytical parameters, chest X-ray, six-minute walk test, spirometry and DLCO–DLNO analysis were performed. Demographic variables, comorbidities, and variables related to the severity of the admission were recorded. Results: Two hundred patients completed the study; 59.5% men, age 62 years, 15.5% admitted to the intensive care unit. The most frequent functional alteration, in 27% of patients, was in the DLCO–DLNO combination. This alteration was associated with age, male sex, degree of dyspnoea, poorer perception of health, and limited ability for physical effort. These patients also presented higher levels of D-Dimer and more residual radiological alterations. In 42% of the patients with diffusion alterations, only reduced DLNO was presented, along with lower D-Dimer levels and less capillary volume involvement. The severity of the process was associated with the reduction in DLCO–DLNO. Conclusions: The most sensitive RFT for the detection of the sequelae of COVID-19 pneumonia was the combined measurement of DLCO–DLNO and this factor was related to patient health status and their capacity for physical exertion. In 40% of these cases, there was only a reduction in DLNO, a finding that may indicate less pulmonary vascular involvement. This research was funded by the Traslaciona Grant Program (code CT-850A-3 from the Xunta de Galicia (FEDER)

Heparin increases prolactin and modifies the effects of FGF-2 upon prolactin accumulation in pituitary primary cultures

We have studied the effects of heparin on prolactin accumulation in the medium from primary pituitary cultures, and whether heparin interferes with the effects of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) on PRL regulation in vitro. In the absence of exogenous FGF-2, heparin increased prolactin accumulation in the culture medium in a dose-dependent manner. FGF-2 also increased the prolactin levels of primary cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner. However, low doses of heparin reduced the effects of FGF-2, but higher doses of heparin increased the maximal FGF-2-induced prolactin secretion and ED50. In vivo estrogenization of rats resulted in the abolition of FGF-2 capability to promote prolactin release in vitro. However, heparin restored cell responsiveness to FGF-2. Our results suggest that heparin, when present in the medium, binds FGF-2, therefore reducing its ability to interact with FGF receptors in a dose-dependent manner up to a critical molar concentration, at which heparin itself starts to activate the FGF receptor, and strengthens the activation induced by its proper ligand, FGF-2. Prolactin responses to FGF-2 are blocked by estrogen pretreatment, and it is probable that this introduces lactotroph cells in the proliferative stage. In conclusion, heparin modulates PRL secretion and PRL responses to FGF-2 in vitro. © 2004 by Humana Press Inc. All rights of any nature whatsoever reserved.Peer Reviewe
