    Miniaturized top-metallized rectangular dielectric resonator antenna

    In this paper, a modal analysis of a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA), with unconventional boundary conditions, is carried out. Analytical equations of the fields inside the resonator and simulations are presented, showing that if a resonator is mounted over a ground plane and loaded by a top metallic sheet, there is a miniaturization of the electric size of the new antenna, without significant deterioration of performance.     Multiscale thermo-mechanical analysis of multi-layered coatings in solar thermal applications

    Solar selective coatings can be multi-layered materials that optimize the solar absorption while reducing thermal radiation losses, granting the material long-term stability. These layers are deposited on structural materials (e.g., stainless steel, Inconel) in order to enhance the optical and thermal properties of the heat transfer system. However, interesting questions regarding their mechanical stability arise when operating at high temperatures. In this work, a full thermo-mechanical multiscale methodology is presented, covering the nano-, micro-, and macroscopic scales. In such methodology, fundamental material properties are determined by means of molecular dynamics simulations that are consequently implemented at the microstructural level by means of finite element analyses. On the other hand, the macroscale problem is solved while taking into account the effect of the microstructure via thermo-mechanical homogenization on a representative volume element (RVE). The methodology presented herein has been successfully implemented in a reference problem in concentrating solar power plants, namely the characterization of a carbon-based nanocomposite and the obtained results are in agreement with the expected theoretical values, demonstrating that it is now possible to apply successfully the concepts behind Integrated Computational Materials Engineering to design new coatings for complex realistic thermo-mechanical applications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Root-to-Shoot Hormonal Communication in Contrasting Rootstocks Suggests an Important Role for the Ethylene Precursor Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic Acid in Mediating Plant Growth under Low-Potassium Nutrition in Tomato

    Selection and breeding of rootstocks that can tolerate low K supply may increase crop productivity in low fertility soils and reduce fertilizer application. However, the underlying physiological traits are still largely unknown. In this study, 16 contrasting recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between domestic and wild tomato species (Solanum lycopersicum × Solanum pimpinellifolium) have been used to analyse traits related to the rootstock-mediated induction of low (L, low shoot fresh weight) or high (H, high shoot fresh weight) vigor to a commercial F1 hybrid grown under control (6 mM, c) and low-K (1 mM, k). Based on hormonal and ionomic composition in the root xylem sap and the leaf nutritional status after long-term (7 weeks) exposure low-K supply, a model can be proposed to explain the rootstocks effects on shoot performance with the ethylene precursor aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) playing a pivotal negative role. The concentration of this hormone was higher in the low-vigor Lc and Lk rootstocks under both conditions, increased in the sensitive HcLk plants under low-K while it was reduced in the high-vigor Hk ones. Low ACC levels would promote the transport of K vs. Na in the vigorous Hk grafted plants. Along with K, Ca, and S, micronutrient uptake and transport were also activated in the tolerant Hk combinations under low-K. Additionally, an interconversion of trans-zeatin into trans-zeatin riboside would contribute to decrease ACC in the tolerant LcHk plants. The high vigor induced by the Hk plants can also be explained by an interaction of ACC with other hormones (cytokinins and salicylic, abscisic and jasmonic acids).     The cost of capital is an indicator of the profitability of a company. Very often, this indicator in conjunction with the return on equity (ROE) is utilized in analyzing investment projects. Many studies have shown that the cost of capital tends to a long-term value, which reveals a mean reversion dynamics. This research examines the behavior of the return on capital by means of Vasicek model. Moreover, under certain conditions, the capital cost is estimated through the model Vasicek.     Effects of the speed ratio on the efficiency of planetary mills

    The ignition time (tig) of the mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction (MSR) process involving the formation of TiB2 from Ti/2B elemental mixtures was used to study the influence of the ratio (k = -ωv/ωd) between the rotational speed of the supporting disc (ωd) and vials (ωv) on the milling efficiency of a Pulverisette 4 planetary mill. The variation of the inverse of the ignition time (1/tig), which is directly related to the milling power provided by the planetary mill, with the process conditions has shown that it is not possible to find a single k value as optimal independently of the experimental conditions used (ωd and the ball-to-powder ratio, BPR). Moreover, it was observed that the lowest milling efficiency (longer tig values) was found for k = 1, which is the usual value employed in routine laboratory works. The best efficiencies were found for the larger k values (2.5 or 3).     New consumption models for audiovisual products: the effects of binge-watching on young university students

    La industria del entretenimiento ha contemplado desde sus inicios al espectador como mero sujeto pasivo. Sin embargo, la disrupción tecnológica que supuso la digitalización de la señal audiovisual ha convertido a los consumidores de estos productos en usuarios activos. Este cambio de paradigma técnico ha favorecido la aparición de una nueva modalidad de acceso que ha modificado, de forma irresoluble, la relación entre público y contenido. El origen de esta revolución se fundamenta en el uso masivo, a través de Internet, de una serie de instrumentos (redes p2p, streaming de vídeo, repositorios digitales, etc.) que permiten al internauta el libre intercambio de cualquier material fílmico fuera de toda restricción comercial. De esta forma, el incremento exponencial de títulos disponibles en Internet para su consumo inmediato, de fácil acceso y a coste cero o muy reducido, ha estimulado una nueva forma de consumo, sobre todo en lo referente a las ficciones televisivas en serie. Este comportamiento anómalo, definido como binge-watching, ha modificado la conducta y el comportamiento de los consumidores, lo que repercute de forma directa en los medios de comunicación tradicionales. Además este nuevo fenómeno repercute en los hábitos de comportamiento del espectador (higiene, sueño, etc.) en pos del visionado ininterrumpido de su contenido preferido. Así, partiendo del paradigma de los Usos y Efectos y basando la observación en un estudio empírico, el objetivo principal de esta investigación es analizar los efectos que este nuevo modelo de consumo audiovisual tiene sobre los jóvenes universitarios.The entertainment industry has seen the viewer as a taxable person. However, technological disruption that was the digitization of audiovisual signal has become consumers of these products in active users. This paradigm shift has led to the emergence of a new mode of access that has changed the relationship between audience and content. The origin of this revolution is the widespread use of Internet tools (P2P networks, streaming, cyberlockers, etc.) that allow the free exchange of any audiovisual product outside of any trade restriction. Thus, the exponential increase of titles available online for immediate consumption, easy access and zero or very low cost, has stimulated a new form of consumption, especially in relation to television fiction series. This state, defined as binge-watching, has modified consumer behavior, which has a direct impact on traditional media. In addition, this new phenomenon affects the behavior of viewer habits (hygiene, sleep, etc.) for uninterrupted viewing of audiovisual products. Thus, from the theory of Uses and Effects and basing observation on an empirical study, the main focus of this research is to analyze the effects that this new model of audiovisual consumption has on young students

    Combined therapies of antithrombotics and antioxidants delay in silico brain tumor progression

    Glioblastoma multiforme, the most frequent type of primary brain tumor, is a rapidly evolving and spatially heterogeneous high-grade astrocytoma that presents areas of necrosis, hypercellularity and microvascular hyperplasia. The aberrant vasculature leads to hypoxic areas and results in an increase of the oxidative stress selecting for more invasive tumor cell phenotypes. In our study we assay in silico different therapeutic approaches which combine antithrombotics, antioxidants and standard radiotherapy. To do so, we have developed a biocomputational model of glioblastoma multiforme that incorporates the spatio-temporal interplay among two glioma cell phenotypes corresponding to oxygenated and hypoxic cells, a necrotic core and the local vasculature whose response evolves with tumor progression. Our numerical simulations predict that suitable combinations of antithrombotics and antioxidants may diminish, in a synergetic way, oxidative stress and the subsequent hypoxic response. This novel therapeutical strategy, with potentially low or no toxicity, might reduce tumor invasion and further sensitize glioblastoma multiforme to conventional radiotherapy or other cytotoxic agents, hopefully increasing median patient overall survival time.Comment: 8 figure
