    Simultaneous multi-frequency observation of the unknown redshift blazar PG1553+113 in March-April 2008

In this paper we determine its spectral energy distribution through simultaneous multi-frequency data to study its emission processes. An extensive campaign was carried out between March and April 2008, where optical, X-ray, high-energy (HE) γ-ray, and very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray data were obtained with the KVA, Abastumani, REM, RossiXTE/ASM, AGILE and MAGIC telescopes, respectively.     MAGIC observation of the GRB 080430 afterglow

Substantial observational efforts have been devoted to the study of gamma-ray bursts during the prompt phase, i.e. the initial burst of high-energy radiation, and during the long-lasting afterglows. In spite of many successes in interpreting these phenomena, there are still several open key questions about the fundamental emission processes, their energetics and the environment. [Aims]: Independently of specific gamma-ray burst theoretical recipes, spectra in the GeV/TeV range are predicted to be remarkably simple, being satisfactorily modeled with power-laws, and therefore offer a very valuable tool to probe the extragalactic background light distribution. Furthermore, the simple detection of a component at very-high energies, i.e. at ~100 GeV, would solve the ambiguity about the importance of various possible emission processes, which provide barely distinguishable scenarios at lower energies. [Methods]: We used the results of the MAGIC telescope observation of the moderate resdhift (z ~ 0.76) GRB 080430 at energies above about 80 GeV, to evaluate the perspective for late-afterglow observations with ground based GeV/TeV telescopes. [Results]: We obtained an upper limit of F95% CL = 5.5 × 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1 for the very-high energy emission of GRB 080430, which cannot set further constraints on the theoretical scenarios proposed for this object also due to the difficulties in modeling the low-energy afterglow. Nonetheless, our observations show that Cherenkov telescopes have already reached the required sensitivity to detect the GeV/TeV emission of GRBs at moderate redshift (z ≲ 0.8), provided the observations are carried out at early times, close to the onset of their afterglow phase.The support of the German BMBF and MPG, the Italian INFN and Spanish MICINN is gratefully acknowledged.     Art, environment, sustainability. Use of lithic waste from carbonated groundwater

    Se han localizado, analizado y aplicado creativamente residuos minerales que depositan las aguas subterráneas, sobresaturadas en CO2, extraídas mediante galerías/minas. El análisis documental abarca el archipiélago canario; la recogida de muestras y el desarrollo experimental se ha realizado principalmente en galerías y conducciones de Tenerife. Las rocas-residuo de mayor resistencia han demostrado ser magníficos materiales para esculturas labradas en formato medio. Los restos fragmentados y las rocas de menor consistencia, tipo toba, pueden encontrar utilidad en fabricación de cales-morteros compatibles con la restauración de obras patrimoniales. Debido a la capacidad petrificadora de estas aguas, se abren múltiples posibilidades en creación tridimensional mediante moldes y/o madreformas, tanto en escultura (obra única) como en actividades artesanales que requieren repetición sucesiva de elementos de similares características. La recopilación exhaustiva de datos y los análisis efectuados evidencian la necesidad de una investigación básica multidisciplinar que ofrezca, en relación con el tratamiento de las aguas subterráneas y las salmueras de rechazo, alternativas de reutilización compatibles con la sostenibilidad medioambiental.Mineral residues deposited in groundwater have been identified, analyzed and creatively applied. These residues are oversaturated in CO2 and are extracted by means of galleries/ mines. The documentary analysis covers the Canary Archipelago; the collection of samples and experimental development has been carried out mainly in galleries and conducts in Tenerife. The most resistant waste-rocks have proved to be magnificent materials for medium format sculpture. The fragmented remains and the rocks of lesser consistency, such as tufa, can be useful in the manufacture of lime-mortars compatible with the restoration of heritage works. Due to the petrifying capacity of these waters, multiple possibilities are opened in three-dimensional creation by means of molds and/or mother forms, both in sculpture (unique work) and in artisan activities that require successive repetition of elements of similar characteristics. The exhaustive collection of data and the analyses carried out show the need for basic multidisciplinary research that offers, in relation to the treatment of groundwater and reject brine, alternatives for reuse that are compatible with environmental sustainability

    Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells for the treatment of patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia requiring mechanical ventilation. A proof of concept study

    Background: Identification of effective treatments in severe cases of COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation represents an unmet medical need. Our aim was to determine whether the administration of adipose-tissue derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AT-MSC) is safe and potentially useful in these patients. Methods: Thirteen COVID-19 adult patients under invasive mechanical ventilation who had received previous antiviral and/or anti-inflammatory treatments (including steroids, lopinavir/ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine and/or tocilizumab, among others) were treated with allogeneic AT-MSC. Ten patients received two doses, with the second dose administered a median of 3 days (interquartile range-IQR- 1 day) after the first one. Two patients received a single dose and another patient received 3 doses. Median number of cells per dose was 0.98 × 106 (IQR 0.50 × 106) AT-MSC/kg of recipient's body weight. Potential adverse effects related to cell infusion and clinical outcome were assessed. Additional parameters analyzed included changes in imaging, analytical and inflammatory parameters. Findings: First dose of AT-MSC was administered at a median of 7 days (IQR 12 days) after mechanical ventilation. No adverse events were related to cell therapy. With a median follow-up of 16 days (IQR 9 days) after the first dose, clinical improvement was observed in nine patients (70%). Seven patients were extubated and discharged from ICU while four patients remained intubated (two with an improvement in their ventilatory and radiological parameters and two in stable condition). Two patients died (one due to massive gastrointestinal bleeding unrelated to MSC therapy). Treatment with AT-MSC was followed by a decrease in inflammatory parameters (reduction in C-reactive protein, IL-6, ferritin, LDH and d-dimer) as well as an increase in lymphocytes, particularly in those patients with clinical improvement. Interpretation: Treatment with intravenous administration of AT-MSC in 13 severe COVID-19 pneumonia under mechanical ventilation in a small case series did not induce significant adverse events and was followed by clinical and biological improvement in most subjects.     Predicción de color de la pulpa en melones enteros mediante espectroscopía de reflectancia en el infrarrojo cercano

    El color de la pulpa del melón es uno de los índices utilizados para determinar el grado de madurez y calidad del mismo, siendo necesario disponer de medidas no destructivas que impidan el daño y la depreciación del producto. La tecnología NIRS ofrece enormes expectativas en este terreno, particularmente derivadas de su carácter de no destructiva, rápida y con posibilidad de ser incorporada a nivel de la línea de producción. El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación fue evaluar un instrumento NIRS de red de diodos para estimar el color del mesocarpio (a*: variación verde-rojo y b*: variación amarillo-azul) de melones intactos. El desarrollo de los modelos de predicción de color se realizó utilizando un colectivo constituido por 158 muestras (vars. Cantaloupe y Galia) procedentes de El Ejido (Almería). Los valores del coeficiente de determinación (r2) y del error típico de validación cruzada (ETVC) obtenidos para los parámetros a* (0,97, 1,98) y b* (0,88, 3,17) en la fruta intacta indican la viabilidad inicial del empleo de la tecnología NIRS para la determinación de la madurez y calidad de frutos de melón enteros

    High Quality Long-Term CD4+ and CD8+ Effector Memory Populations Stimulated by DNA-LACK/MVA-LACK Regimen in Leishmania major BALB/c Model of Infection

    Heterologous vaccination based on priming with a plasmid DNA vector and boosting with an attenuated vaccinia virus MVA recombinant, with both vectors expressing the Leishmania infantum LACK antigen (DNA-LACK and MVA-LACK), has shown efficacy conferring protection in murine and canine models against cutaneus and visceral leishmaniasis, but the immune parameters of protection remain ill defined. Here we performed by flow cytometry an in depth analysis of the T cell populations induced in BALB/c mice during the vaccination protocol DNA-LACK/MVA-LACK, as well as after challenge with L. major parasites. In the adaptive response, there is a polyfunctional CD4+ and CD8+ T cell activation against LACK antigen. At the memory phase the heterologous vaccination induces high quality LACK-specific long-term CD4+ and CD8+ effector memory cells. After parasite challenge, there is a moderate boosting of LACK-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Anti-vector responses were largely CD8+-mediated. The immune parameters induced against LACK and triggered by the combined vaccination DNA/MVA protocol, like polyfunctionality of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells with an effector phenotype, could be relevant in protection against leishmaniasis

    El presente volumen recoge las contribuciones presentadas al II Congreso Internacional sobre Tarteso, Nuevas Fronteras, que tuvo lugar en Mérida entre los días 17 y 19 de noviembre de 2021. Su lectura permite un viaje desde el extremo oriental del Mediterráneo hasta el suroeste de la península ibérica, mostrando las diversas realidades históricas acontecidas en este territorio durante la I Edad del Hierro. El objetivo de esta publicación es mostrar la situación que atravesaba el Mediterráneo durante los años de surgimiento y desarrollo de la cultura tartésica para así comprender mejor la formación y evolución de dicha cultura. El conocimiento de Tarteso ha evolucionado sensiblemente en la última década, desde la celebración y publicación de las actas del I Congreso Internacional, Tarteso. El emporio del metal (Almuzara, 2013).
