A multidimensional approach to the resilience in older adults despite COVID-19.
Researchers have mainly focused on aging risk factors and COVID-19 consequences. However, older adults have
proved their ability to overcome adversities along their life. Resilience is a protective variable that dampens the
impact of stress. Based on MacLeod’s et al. (2016) approach, we aimed to analyze the relationship between older
adults’ resilience and COVID-19 related-stressors as well as their physical, mental, and social characteristics. Eight
hundred eighty-nine people aged 60 and over participated in this study. Older participants, women, having better
perceived health and not losing a loved one because of the virus were associated with more resilience. Moreover,
higher levels of gratitude, personal growth, life purpose and lower levels of depression were associated with greater
scores in resilience. This study offers a change of perspective in which aging is perceived from a positive viewpoint by
focusing on easily accessible resources that may help older adults to cope with adverse situations.post-print913 K
Matter-Wave Solitons in the Presence of Collisional Inhomogeneities: Perturbation theory and the impact of derivative terms
We study the dynamics of bright and dark matter-wave solitons in the presence
of a spatially varying nonlinearity. When the spatial variation does not
involve zero crossings, a transformation is used to bring the problem to a
standard nonlinear Schrodinger form, but with two additional terms: an
effective potential one and a non-potential term. We illustrate how to apply
perturbation theory of dark and bright solitons to the transformed equations.
We develop the general case, but primarily focus on the non-standard special
case whereby the potential term vanishes, for an inverse square spatial
dependence of the nonlinearity. In both cases of repulsive and attractive
interactions, appropriate versions of the soliton perturbation theory are shown
to accurately describe the soliton dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 5 fugure
Stability of dark solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice
We investigate the stability of dark solitons (DSs) in an effectively
one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the magnetic
parabolic trap and an optical lattice (OL). The analysis is based on both the
full Gross-Pitaevskii equation and its tight-binding approximation counterpart
(discrete nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation). We find that DSs are subject to
weak instabilities with an onset of instability mainly governed by the period
and amplitude of the OL. The instability, if present, sets in at large times
and it is characterized by quasi-periodic oscillations of the DS about the
minimum of the parabolic trap.Comment: Typo fixed in Eq. (1): cos^2 -> sin^
Localized breathing solutions for Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic traps
We demonstrate the existence of localized oscillatory breathers for
quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates confined in periodic
potentials. The breathing behavior corresponds to position-oscillations of
individual condensates about the minima of the potential lattice. We deduce the
structural stability of the localized oscillations from the construction. The
stability is confirmed numerically for perturbations to the initial state of
the condensate, to the potential trap, as well as for external noise. We also
construct periodic and chaotic extended oscillations for the chain of
condensates. All our findings are verified by direct numerical integration of
the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one dimension.Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages, 7 postscript figures, extended version of previous

Diet quality index as a predictor of treatment efficacy in overweight and obese adolescents: The EVASYON study
Background & aim: A diet quality index (DQI) is a tool that provides an overall score of an individual''s dietary intake when assessing compliance with food-based dietary guidelines. A number of DQIs have emerged, albeit their associations with health-related outcomes are debated. The aim of the present study was to assess whether adherence to dietary intervention, and the overall quality of the diet, can predict body composition changes. Methods: To this purpose, overweight/obese adolescents (n = 117, aged: 13–16 years; 51 males, 66 females) were recruited into a multi-component (diet, physical activity and psychological support) family-based group treatment programme. We measured the adolescents’ compliance and body composition at baseline and after 2 months (intensive phase) and 13 months (extensive phase) of follow-up. Also, at baseline, after 6 months, and at the end of follow-up we calculated the DQI. Results: Global compliance with the dietary intervention was 37.4% during the intensive phase, and 14.3% during the extensive phase. Physical activity compliance was 94.1% at 2-months and 34.7% at 13months and psychological support compliance were growing over the intervention period (10.3% intensive phase and 45.3% during extensive phase). Adolescents complying with the meal frequency criteria at the end of the extensive phase had greater reductions in FMI z-scores than those did not complying (Cohen''s d = 0.53). A statistically significant association was observed with the diet quality index. DQI-A variation explained 98.1% of BMI z-score changes and 95.1% of FMI changes. Conclusions: We conclude that assessment of changes in diet quality could be a useful tool in predicting body composition changes in obese adolescents involved in a diet and physical activity intervention programme backed-up by psychological and family support
