Constitutionalism and democracy

La organización del poder político en una sociedad democrática no está exenta de dificultades. Así, el fenómeno conocido como constitucionalismo ha traído a primer plano la discusión a propósito de si este y democracia son principios opuestos sobre los que una teoría política sensata debe intentar alcanzar un compromiso, o son por el contrario principios complementarios que tienen un origen común. Ronald Dworkin, uno de los filósofos del derecho más importante de las últimas décadas, ofrece una reflexión sugerente en torno a esta cuestión. Non-linear Preheating with Scalar Metric Perturbations

We have studied preheating of field perturbations in a 3-dimensional lattice including the effect of scalar metric perturbations, in two generic models of inflation: chaotic inflation with a quartic potential, and standard hybrid inflation. We have prepared the initial state for the classical evolution of the system with vanishing vector and tensor metric perturbations, consistent with the constraint equations, the energy and momentum constraints. The non-linear evolution inevitably generates vector and tensor modes, and this reflects on how well the constraint equations are fulfilled during the evolution. The induced preheating of the scalar metric perturbations is not large enough to backreact onto the fields, but it could affect the evolution of vector and tensor modes. This is the case in hybrid inflation for some values of the coupling $g$ and the height of potential $V_0^{1/4}$. For example with $V_0^{1/4} \simeq 10^{15}$ GeV, preheating of scalar perturbations is such that their source term in the evolution equation of tensor and vector becomes comparable to that of the field anisotropic stress.Comment: 15 pages, 12 eps figure

Wetland restoration and nitrate reduction: the example of the periurban wetland of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, North Spain)

Changes in land use and agricultural intensification caused wetlands on the quaternary aquifer of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) to disappear some years ago and nitrate concentration in groundwaters increased very quickly. The Basque Government recently declared the East Sector of this aquifer a Vulnerable Zone according to the 91/676/CEE European Directive. Recently, the wetlands have been restored through the closure of the main drainage ditches, the consequent elevation of the water table and the abondonment of agricultural practices near the wetlands. This is the case of the Zurbano wetland. Restoration has allowed the recovery of its biogeochemical function, which has reduced nitrate concentrations in waters. Nitrate concentrations which exceed 50 mg l–1 in groundwaters entering into the wetland are less than 10 mg l–1 at the outlet. Conditions in the wetland are conducive to the loss of nitrates: organic matter rich wetted soils, clay presence allowing a local semiconfined flow and very low hydraulic gradient. Water quality monitoring at several points around the wetland showed the processes involved in nitrate loss, although some aspects still remain unresolved. However, during storm events, the wetland effectively reduces the nitrate concentration entering the Alegria River, the most important river on the quaternary aquifer

On the applicability of the classical dipole-dipole interaction for polar Bose-Einstein condensates

We argue that the classical form of the dipole-dipole interaction energy cannot be used to model the interaction of the bosons in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate made of polar atoms. This fact is due to convergence of integrals, if no additional restrictions are introduced. The problem can be regularized, in particular, by introducing a hard sphere model. As an example we propose a regularization consistent with the long range behavior of the effective potential and with the scattering amplitude of the fast particles.Comment: submitted to Phys. Re

Indolo[2,3-a]quinolizidines and derivatives: Bioactivity and asymmetric Synthesis

Corynantheine alkaloids with a tetracyclic indole[2,3-a]-quinolizidine motif are an important issue in academia and in the life science industries due to their broad bioactivity profile. In particular, the main biological effects described for indoloquinolizidines include analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and antiarrhythmic activities, as well as inhibition of multiple ion channels, affinity for opioid receptors, and activity against Leishmania. For that reason, in the last decades, numerous efforts have been invested in the development of novel synthetic strategies to obtain the indole[2,3-a]-quinolizidine system. This review focuses on the synthetic methodologies developed to target the most important alkaloids of this family, and highlights the potential use of these alkaloids or analogs to treat several diseases, ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disorders

La economía española ha entrado en recesión en el segundo trimestre de 2012, por segunda vez desde que estalló la crisis económica. La intensa caída de la actividad económica provoca una nueva oleada de destrucción de empleo. Como consecuencia, se ha alcanzado la tasa de paro más alta en un trimestre en la serie histórica de la EPA que ofrece el INE. En el artículo presente se analizan la evolución de las principales variables laborales en el mercado de trabajo español y de Andalucía. Se presta especial atención a la formación de la mano de obra y a la evolución de los diferentes grupos de trabajadores cualificados de acuerdo con la evolución del ciclo económico en el periodo 2008-2012.In the second quarter of 2012, Spanish economy has come into a new recession period for the second time since the beginning of the economic crisis. The big decrease of economic activity is the cause of a new wave of employment destruction. As a result, the highest rate of unemployment in modern Spanish economic history has been reached, according to the data provided by the National Institute of Statistics. In this paper, we analyse the evolution of the main labour indicators in the Spanish and Andalusian Labour Markets. We pay special attention to the impact of economic crisis on different groups of workers according to their educational levels in the period 2008-2012

Instalados en la recesión económica. Análisis de coyuntura del mercado de trabajo en el segundo semestre de 2012

A lo largo de 2012, España experimenta una profundización en la recesión económica que está sufriendo. Durante los cuatro trimestres de este año, no se han visto cifras positivas de crecimiento, sino una caída constante. La misma tendencia se observa en el resto de economías europeas, que en la última parte del año están adentrándose, o van camino de caer, de nuevo en la recesión. Como consecuencia de esta evolución, el deterioro del mercado de trabajo español sigue aumentando. Cae la ocupación y aumenta el desempleo hasta casi seis millones de personas, alcanzándose la tasa de paro más elevada de los registros de la EPA (26,02%). En el presente trabajo se presenta una panorámica sobre la evolución de la economía y el mercado de trabajo en España en el segundo semestre de 2012. El artículo también recoge un epígrafe dedicado al análisis de la evolución de las variables económicas y laborales más relevantes en Andalucía

A lo largo del primer semestre de 2013, la economía española ha seguido en el proceso de recesión económica, si bien se presentan algunos indicios de que las previsiones para los próximos años pueden mejorar indicando el final de la crisis y el comienzo de la recuperación económica. No obstante, la tasa de paro en España se situó en el 26,26%, y la tasa de empleo en el 43,91%, valores muy alejados de la media de la UE. En el presente artículo se presenta una panorámica sobre la evolución de la economía y del mercado de trabajo en España en el primer trimestre de 2013. En primer lugar se analiza la evolución del cuadro macroeconómico general de la economía española. En las tres secciones siguientes se analizan, respectivamente, la oferta de trabajo, la demanda de trabajo y el desempleo. El artículo concluye con un epígrafe dedicado a la evolución de las variables económicas y laborales en Andalucía en el mismo periodo de tiempo
