    Trustworthy placements: Improving quality and resilience in collaborative attack detection

    Abstract In distributed and collaborative attack detection systems decisions are made on the basis of the events reported by many sensors, e.g., Intrusion Detection Systems placed across various network locations. In some cases such events originate at locations over which we have little control, for example because they belong to an organisation that shares information with us. Blindly accepting such reports as real encompasses several risks, as sensors might be dishonest, unreliable or simply having been compromised. In these situations trust plays an important role in deciding whether alerts should be believed or not. In this work we present an approach to maximise the quality of the information gathered in such systems and the resilience against dishonest behaviours. We introduce the notion of trust diversity amongst sensors and argue that detection configurations with such a property perform much better in many respects. Using reputation as a proxy for trust, we introduce an adaptive scheme to dynamically reconfigure the network of detection sensors. Experiments confirm an overall increase both in detection quality and resilience against compromise and misbehaviour

    Spin-one color superconductivity in compact stars?- an analysis within NJL-type models

    We present results of a microscopic calculation using NJL-type model of possible spin-one pairings in two flavor quark matter for applications in compact star phenomenology. We focus on the color-spin locking phase (CSL) in which all quarks pair in a symmetric way, in which color and spin states are locked. The CSL condensate is particularly interesting for compact star applications since it is flavor symmetric and could easily satisfy charge neutrality. Moreover, the fact that in this phase all quarks are gapped might help to suppress the direct Urca process, consistent with cooling models. The order of magnitude of these small gaps (~1 MeV) will not influence the EoS, but their also small critical temperatures (T_c ~800 keV) could be relevant in the late stages neutron star evolution, when the temperature falls below this value and a CSL quark core could form.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, revised version, accepted for the Conference Proceedings of "Isolated Neutron Stars: from the Interior to the Surface", London, 24-28.     Limited risk of Zika virus transmission by five Aedes albopictus populations from Spain

    Background: Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito, is an exotic invasive species in Europe. It has substantial public health relevance due to its potential role in transmitting several human pathogens. Out of the European countries, Spain has one of the highest risk levels of autochthonous arbovirus transmission due to both the high density of Ae. albopictus and the extensive tourist influx from vector-endemic areas. This study aims to investigate the susceptibility of five Ae. albopictus populations from mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands to a Brazilian Zika virus (ZIKV) strain. Methods: The F1 generation of each Ae. albopictus population was orally challenged with a ZIKV-infected blood meal (1.8 × 10 PFU/ml). At 7 and 14 days post-infection (dpi), mosquito bodies (thorax and abdomen) and heads were individually analysed through RT-qPCR to determine the infection rate (IR) and dissemination rate (DR), respectively. The saliva of infected mosquitoes was inoculated in Vero cells and the transmission rate was assessed by plaque assay or RT-qPCR on ∼33 individuals per population. Results: The IR and DR ranged between 12-88%, and 0-60%, respectively, suggesting that ZIKV is capable of crossing the midgut barrier. Remarkably, no infectious viral particle was found in saliva samples, indicating a low ability of ZIKV to overcome the salivary gland barrier. A subsequent assay revealed that a second non-infective blood meal 48 h after ZIKV exposure did not influence Ae. albopictus vector competence. Conclusions: The oral experimental ZIKV infections performed here indicate that Ae. albopictus from Spain become infected and disseminate the virus through the body but has a limited ability to transmit the Brazilian ZIKV strain through biting. Therefore, the results suggest a limited risk of autochthonous ZIKV transmission in Spain by Ae. albopictus

La ONU estimó que para el año 2030 se necesitarán mil millonesde toneladas más de cereales por año (UNDP, 2015).     Kinetics of antibodies in sera, saliva, and urine samples from adult patients with primary or secondary dengue 3 virus infections

    SummaryObjectivesThe kinetics of three serological markers (IgM, IgA, and IgG) in serum, saliva, and urine samples from adult patients with primary or secondary dengue infection were studied.DesignSerum, saliva, and urine samples were collected from 22 patients with clinical and confirmed dengue 3 virus infection during the outbreak in Havana City in 2001. They were tested by capture IgM (MAC-ELISA), IgA (AAC-ELISA), and IgE (EAC-ELISA) and IgG ELISA inhibition method (EIM) to detect specific dengue antibodies.ResultsSimilar kinetics were observed in IgM, IgA, and IgG antibodies in saliva and IgA and IgG in urine samples from secondary cases compared with kinetics in serum samples, although the values were lower. No IgG antibody was detected in saliva and urine samples in primary cases and IgM antibody was not detected in urine samples from either primary or secondary infection. All secondary cases were positive for IgG in saliva and urine samples at day 7. The kinetics of specific IgE antibodies in primary and secondary cases were different.ConclusionsThe kinetics of three serological markers (IgM, IgA, and IgG) in serum, saliva, and urine samples from adult patients with primary or secondary dengue 3 virus infection were studied for the first time, showing its behavior and usefulness in dengue virus diagnosis. The specific IgE could play a role as a serological marker in secondary infections
