    A Novel QAM Technique for High Order QAM Signaling

    The paper proposes a novel spread quadrature amplitude modulation (S-QAM) technique with high SNR improvement for high-order QAM channels. Simulated and experimental bit error rate (BER) performance analyses of the proposed technique in blind and non-blind equalizers are obtained by using single carrier (SC) WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004) radio. Instead of using any one particular type of channel profile, this study concentrates on true frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels in the real-time WiMAX radio environment around 3.5 GHz. The Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) blind equalizer has been compared with the popular non-blind equalizers, Recursive Least Squares (RLS) and Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm, as benchmarks. It has been proven in experimental and simulated channels that CMA blind equalizer, using the proposed technique, can be considered as a low complexity, spectrum efficient and high performance time domain equalizations to be embedded in a transceiver for the next generation communications. Furthermore the proposed technique has also reduced approximately till 5 dB and 7.5 dB performance differences between non-blind and blind equalizers for 16-QAM and 64-QAM, respectively. The simulation results have demonstrated that the simulated and experimental studies of the proposed technique are compatible with each other and extremely satisfying

    Are cascading flows stable?

    The stability of flows cascading down slopes as dense inclined plumes is examined, with particular reference to flows observed in Lake Geneva during winter periods of severe cooling. A previous conjecture by Turner that the flow may be in a state of marginal stability is confirmed: the observed mean velocity and density profiles are unstable to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, but only marginally so; the growth rates of the most unstable small disturbances to the cascading flow in Lake Geneva are small, with e-folding periods of about 2 h. A reduction in the maximum velocity by about 20% is required to stabilize the flow. The possibility that stationary hydraulic jumps may occur in the observed flow is also considered. Several plausible flow states downstream of transitions are examined, allowing for mixing and density changes to occur, ranging from one that preserves the shape of the density and velocity profiles to one in which, as a consequence of mixing, the velocity and density become uniform in depth within the cascading flow. Neither of these extreme states is found to conserve the fluxes of volume, mass and momentum through a transition in which the energy flux does not increase, and to be unique or ‘stable' in the sense that no further transition is possible to a similar flow state without more entrainment. Stable transitions to intermediate downstream flows that conserve flow properties and reduce energy flux are, however, found, although the smallest value of the flow parameter, Fr≡ Umax2/gΔ h (where Umax is the maximum flow speed, g is the acceleration due to gravity, Δ is a fractional density difference within the flow and h is the flow thickness) at which transitions may occur is only slightly less than that of the cascading flow in Lake Geneva. In this sense, the observed flow is marginally unstable to a finite-amplitude transition or hydraulic jump. Velocity and density profiles of possible flows downstream of a transition are found. The amplitudes of possible transitions and the flux of water entrained from the ambient overlying water mass are limited to narrow range

    Transcranial Electric Stimulation Entrains Cortical Neuronal Populations in Rats

    Low intensity electric fields have been suggested to affect the ongoing neuronal activity in vitro and in human studies. However, the physiological mechanism of how weak electrical fields affect and interact with intact brain activity is not well understood. We performed in vivo extracellular and intracellular recordings from the neocortex and hippocampus of anesthetized rats and extracellular recordings in behaving rats. Electric fields were generated by sinusoid patterns at slow frequency (0.8, 1.25 or 1.7 Hz) via electrodes placed on the surface of the skull or the dura. Transcranial electric stimulation (TES) reliably entrained neurons in widespread cortical areas, including the hippocampus. The percentage of TES phase-locked neurons increased with stimulus intensity and depended on the behavioral state of the animal. TES-induced voltage gradient, as low as 1 mV/mm at the recording sites, was sufficient to phase-bias neuronal spiking. Intracellular recordings showed that both spiking and subthreshold activity were under the combined influence of TES forced fields and network activity. We suggest that TES in chronic preparations may be used for experimental and therapeutic control of brain activity

    Effect of Composition on the Spontaneous Emission Probabilities, simulated Emission Cross Sections and Local Environment of Tm+3, in Teo2-Wo3 Glass'

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Effect of composition on the structure, spontaneous and stimulated emission probabilities of various 1.0 mol% Tm2O3 doped (1 - x)TeO2 + (x)WO3 glasses were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV/VIS/NIR) absorption and luminescence measurements. Absorption measurements in the UV/VIS/NIR region were used to determine spontaneous emission probabilities for the 4f-4f transitions of Tm3+ ions. Six absorption bands corresponding to the absorption of the (1)G(4), F-3(2), F-3(3) and F-3(4), H-3(5) and H-3(4) levels from the H-3(6) ground level were observed. Integrated absorption cross-section of each band except that of H-3(5) level was found to vary with the glass composition. Luminescence spectra of the samples were measured upon 457.9 nm excitation. Three emission bands centered at 476 nm ((1)G(4) --> H-3(6) transition), 651 nm ((1)G(4) --> H-3(4) transition) and 800 nm ((1)G(4) --> H-3(5) transition) were observed. Spontaneous emission cross-sections together with the luminescence spectra measured upon 457.9 nm excitation were used to determine the stimulated emission cross-sections of these emissions. The effect of glass composition on the Judd-Ofelt parameters and therefore on the spontaneous and the stimulated emission cross-sections for the metastable levels of Tm3+ ions were discussed in detail. The effect of temperature on the stimulated emission cross-sections for the emissions observed upon 457.9 nm excitation was also discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

    Effect of twine thickness on selectivity of gillnets for bogue, Boops boops,in Turkish waters

    To investigate the effect of twine thickness on the selectivity of multifilament gillnet targeting bogue,Boops boops L., four different stations were sampled between March and November 2008 in the northern Aegean Sea. Gillnets with 22, 23, and 25 mm nominal mesh size (bar length) each having two different twine thicknesses (approximately 0.45 mm and 0.54 mm ∅) were applied for this purpose. The deviances from the SELECT method revealed that lognormal models provided the best fits for both of the twine thicknesses. Results from the two-way ANOVA analyses revealed that the mean total lengths increased with the mesh size (F = 87.36; df = 2; P < 0.0001) and decreased with the twine thickness (F = 46.12; df = 1; P < 0.0001). The 22 mm mesh size net (0.45 mm ∅) captured significantly larger fish than the 23 mm mesh size net (0.54 mm ∅) probably due to the higher elasticity and flexibility of the thinner twine. Thus, fisheries managers should take into consideration the twine thickness while advising mesh size regulations in gillnet fisheries

    Determination of normal splenic volume in relation to age, gender and body habitus: a stereological study on computed tomography

    Background: The aim of this study is to assess and document the dimensions of the normal spleen measured on computed tomography (CT) images with the normal splenic volume measured by Cavalieri principle on CT images and thereby serve as a baseline for comparison in cases of splenomegaly using abdominal CT. To investigate the relationship between these changes and body mass index, gender, abdominal diameters.Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed abdominal CT examinations of 212 adults between the ages of 20 and 88 years. There were seven groups of patients. The spleen volume (SV) measurements using abdominal CT images of each patient on the Image Information Systems were performed with Cavalieri principle.Results: The mean SV and splenic length (SL), width (SW), and thickness (ST) for the total study population of 212 patients was 198 ± 88 cm3, 9.96 ± 2.1 cm, 8.87 ±± 1.6 cm and 4.58 ± 0.8 cm, respectively. There was a strong correlation between SV and ST (r = 0.752, p &lt; 0.001), SL (r = 0.735, p &lt; 0.001), SW (r = 0.681,p &lt; 0.001) mean values of total study population. Comparison between mean splenic dimension parameters for males and females showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.032 for SV, p = 0.04 for ST) but no statistically significant difference with SL and SW. Also there was a positive correlation between SV and body height, sagittal abdominal diameter and transvers abdominal diameter in mean of total groups and female groups, there was no correlation in males.Conclusions: The normal reference ranges for SV and size given in this study canserve as a standard to judge whether splenomegaly is present in patients

    Light harvesting with Ge quantum dots embedded in SiO2 and Si3N4

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Germanium quantum dots (QDs) embedded in SiO2 or in Si3N4 have been studied for light harvesting purposes. SiGeO or SiGeN thin films, produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, have been annealed up to 850 degrees C to induce Ge QD precipitation in Si based matrices. By varying the Ge content, the QD diameter can be tuned in the 3-9 nm range in the SiO2 matrix, or in the 1-2 nm range in the Si3N4 matrix, as measured by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, Si3N4 matrix hosts Ge QDs at higher density and more closely spaced than SiO2 matrix. Raman spectroscopy revealed a higher threshold for amorphous-to-crystalline transition for Ge QDs embedded in Si3N4 matrix in comparison with those in the SiO2 host. Light absorption by Ge QDs is shown to be more effective in Si3N4 matrix, due to the optical bandgap (0.9-1.6 eV) being lower than in SiO2 matrix (1.2-2.2 eV). Significant photoresponse with a large measured internal quantum efficiency has been observed for Ge QDs in Si3N4 matrix when they are used as a sensitive layer in a photodetector device.     Time to focus on outcome assessment tools for childhood vasculitis

    Childhood systemic vasculitides are a group of rare diseases with multi-organ involvement and potentially devastating consequences. After establishment of new classification criteria (Ankara consensus conference in 2008), it is now time to establish measures for proper definition of activity and damage in childhood primary vasculitis. By comparison to adult vasculitis, there is no consensus for indices of activity and damage assessment in childhood vasculitis. Assessment of disease activity is likely to become a major area of interest in pediatric rheumatology in the near future. After defining the classification criteria for primary systemic childhood vasculitis, the next step was to perform a validation study using the original Birmingham vasculitis activity score as well as the disease extent index to measure disease activity in childhood vasculitis. Presently, there are efforts in place to develop a pediatric vasculitis activity score. This paper reviews the current understanding about the assessment tools (i.e., clinical features, laboratory tests, radiologic assessments, etc.) widely used for evaluation of the disease activity and damage status of the children with vasculitis. © 2011 Demirkaya et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
