Effect of ripening on physico-chemical properties and bioactive compounds in papaya pulp, skin and seeds
Byproducts generated by the food industry represent an alternative to obtain functional ingredients. Byproducts of tropical fruits, such as papaya skin and seeds, represent a source of bioactive compounds (BC), which could change during fruit ripening. Effect of ripening stage (RS) on BC content and antioxidant properties of edible pulp, skin and seeds of papaya cv. Maradol was determined. Papaya skin showed significantly higher ascorbic acid (~250 mg AAE/100 g) content than seeds (~20 mg/100 g), while pulp had the highest values (~600 mg/100 g). However, papaya skin presented higher total phenolic content (~560 mg GAE/100 g) and flavonoids (~1000 mg QE/100 g) than pulp and seeds. Also, papaya skin showed the highest values followed by pulp and seeds with TEAC, FRAP and DPPH. Papaya skin had higher carotenoids and α-tocopherol (~1500 µg/100 g and ~4000 µg/100 g, respectively) content than pulp and seeds. BC content in each byproduct varied in all RS. Therefore, among the papaya byproducts, skin represents a good source of BC with good antioxidant properties, which may be used to extract them for its incorporation in functional foods depending on RS
Effects of alirocumab on types of myocardial infarction: insights from the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial
Aims The third Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction (MI) Task Force classified MIs into five types: Type 1, spontaneous; Type 2, related to oxygen supply/demand imbalance; Type 3, fatal without ascertainment of cardiac biomarkers; Type 4, related to percutaneous coronary intervention; and Type 5, related to coronary artery bypass surgery. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction with statins and proprotein convertase subtilisin–kexin Type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors reduces risk of MI, but less is known about effects on types of MI. ODYSSEY OUTCOMES compared the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab with placebo in 18 924 patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and elevated LDL-C (≥1.8 mmol/L) despite intensive statin therapy. In a pre-specified analysis, we assessed the effects of alirocumab on types of MI. Methods and results Median follow-up was 2.8 years. Myocardial infarction types were prospectively adjudicated and classified. Of 1860 total MIs, 1223 (65.8%) were adjudicated as Type 1, 386 (20.8%) as Type 2, and 244 (13.1%) as Type 4. Few events were Type 3 (n = 2) or Type 5 (n = 5). Alirocumab reduced first MIs [hazard ratio (HR) 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77–0.95; P = 0.003], with reductions in both Type 1 (HR 0.87, 95% CI 0.77–0.99; P = 0.032) and Type 2 (0.77, 0.61–0.97; P = 0.025), but not Type 4 MI. Conclusion After ACS, alirocumab added to intensive statin therapy favourably impacted on Type 1 and 2 MIs. The data indicate for the first time that a lipid-lowering therapy can attenuate the risk of Type 2 MI. Effect of alirocumab on mortality after acute coronary syndromes. An analysis of the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES randomized clinical trial
Background: Previous trials of PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9) inhibitors demonstrated reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events, but not death. We assessed the effects of alirocumab on death after index acute coronary syndrome. Methods: ODYSSEY OUTCOMES (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) was a double-blind, randomized comparison of alirocumab or placebo in 18 924 patients who had an ACS 1 to 12 months previously and elevated atherogenic lipoproteins despite intensive statin therapy. Alirocumab dose was blindly titrated to target achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) between 25 and 50 mg/dL. We examined the effects of treatment on all-cause death and its components, cardiovascular and noncardiovascular death, with log-rank testing. Joint semiparametric models tested associations between nonfatal cardiovascular events and cardiovascular or noncardiovascular death. Results: Median follow-up was 2.8 years. Death occurred in 334 (3.5%) and 392 (4.1%) patients, respectively, in the alirocumab and placebo groups (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.98; P=0.03, nominal P value). This resulted from nonsignificantly fewer cardiovascular (240 [2.5%] vs 271 [2.9%]; HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.74 to 1.05; P=0.15) and noncardiovascular (94 [1.0%] vs 121 [1.3%]; HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.59 to 1.01; P=0.06) deaths with alirocumab. In a prespecified analysis of 8242 patients eligible for ≥3 years follow-up, alirocumab reduced death (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.65 to 0.94; P=0.01). Patients with nonfatal cardiovascular events were at increased risk for cardiovascular and noncardiovascular deaths (P<0.0001 for the associations). Alirocumab reduced total nonfatal cardiovascular events (P<0.001) and thereby may have attenuated the number of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular deaths. A post hoc analysis found that, compared to patients with lower LDL-C, patients with baseline LDL-C ≥100 mg/dL (2.59 mmol/L) had a greater absolute risk of death and a larger mortality benefit from alirocumab (HR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.56 to 0.90; Pinteraction=0.007). In the alirocumab group, all-cause death declined wit h achieved LDL-C at 4 months of treatment, to a level of approximately 30 mg/dL (adjusted P=0.017 for linear trend). Conclusions: Alirocumab added to intensive statin therapy has the potential to reduce death after acute coronary syndrome, particularly if treatment is maintained for ≥3 years, if baseline LDL-C is ≥100 mg/dL, or if achieved LDL-C is low. BACKGROUND: Chickpea is considered a wholesome and nutritious food due to its nutritional properties and glycemic response. Such properties can be influenced by the thermal treatment used to cook this legume and produce a snack named leblebi. From the consumers' point of view, it is desirable to improve texture and palatability of the chickpea by the processing steps used to make leblebi. However, consumers are increasingly concerned with the nutritional value of snack foods. RESULTS: Nutritional components and digestibility properties of single and double heat-treated chickpea, single and double roasted leblebi and white leblebi were studied. High sodium, starch damage and soluble dietary fiber content were observed in white leblebi; while the other samples showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher insoluble dietary fiber content. Heat treatment and processing significantly (P < 0.05) altered the viscosity and starch properties of the samples. High resistant starch content (28.28% to 30.20%) and low estimated glycemic index (38.67 to 41.28) in heat-treated chickpeas and roasted leblebi were observed. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that heat-treated chickpea and roasted leblebi have good nutritional quality and low glycemic response. White leblebi had relatively high sodium content and glycemic response. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry
High polymer/surfactant ratio in the seeded semicontinuous heterogeneous polymerization of vinyl acetate
Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized by a seeded semicontinuous heterogeneous process. Stable latexes with a polymer/surfactant weight ratio of 65 were obtained, which is comparable with the highest value reported in the literature for emulsion polymerization but with the advantage of obtaining smaller particles (average diameter, Dp = 53 nm) which are similar to those obtained by microemulsion polymerization. The surfactant (sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS) concentration used in the recipe (0.32 wt%) is much lower than those typically used in microemulsion polymerization. Although molar masses increased during the continuous monomer addition period, they were small at the end of the reaction (Mn = 69 × 103 g·mol-1) and this was attributed to bimolecular termination inside the particles. The values of polymerization rate (Rp) and monomer addition rate (Fm) were nearly the same, indicating that polymerization was performed under monomer starved conditions. POLYM. ENG. Reactivity ratios and monomer partitioning in the microemulsion copolymerization of vinyl acetate and butyl acrylate
The true monomer reactivity ratios for the vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate system were determined with experimental data from the cumulative copolymer composition at low, intermediate, and high conversions and with the monomer partitioning among the aqueous, microemulsion droplet, and polymer particle phases taken into account. A mixture of sodium dodecyl sulfate and poly(ethylene oxide) (23) dodecyl ether (Brij-35; 3 : 1 w/w) was used as a stabilizer. Potassium persulfate was used as an initiator. The true values of the monomer reactivity ratios were 0.028 ±3.2 × 10-3 for vinyl acetate and 6.219 ± 3.1 × 10-1 for butyl acrylate, and these were in agreement with those reported in the literature for bulk copolymerizations but differed from values reported for other compartmentalized copolymerizations. Thus, these results indicate that the monomer partitioning and cumulative copolymer composition throughout the reaction have to be duly accounted for in the determination of monomer reactivity ratios in heterogeneous polymerizations. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
Risk screening, emergency care, and lay concepts of complications during pregnancy in Chiapas, Mexico
Maternal morbidity and mortality are widespread in Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state, as in many developing regions. Globally, the utility of three approaches to addressing such problems has been debated: (a) obstetric risk screening (i.e. screening women for risk during pregnancy and channeling those at risk to preventive care); (b) emergency obstetric care (i.e. identifying complications during pregnancy or birth and providing prompt effective treatment); and (c) combined risk screening and emergency care. Unaddressed to date in peer-reviewed journals are the lay perceptions of complications and risk that precede and incite the quest for obstetric care in Mexico. High incidence of maternal mortality in Chiapas, exacerbated by the predominantly rural, highly indigenous, geographically dispersed, and economically marginalized nature of the state's southern Border Region, prompted us to conduct 45 open-ended interviews with a convenience sample of women and their close relative/s, including indigenous and non-indigenous informants in urban and rural areas of four municipalities in this region. Interviews suggest that none of the three approaches is effective in this context, and we detail reasons why each approach has fallen short. Specific obstacles identified include that (1) many women do not access adequate prenatal screening care on a regular basis; (2) emergency obstetric care in this region is severely circumscribed; and (3) lay notions of pregnancy-related risk and complications contrast with official clinical criteria, such that neither clinical nor extra-clinical prenatal monitoring encompasses the entire range of physical and social risk factors and danger signs. Microemulsion copolymerization of vinyl acetate and butyl acrylate using a mixture of anionic and non-ionic surfactants
Monomer mixtures of vinyl acetate (VAc)/butyl acrylate (BuA) were polymerized in batch reactions at 60 °C with potassium persulfate as the initiator in microemulsions consisting of VAc:BuA (85:15 wt/wt)/water/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/polyoxyethylene (23) dodecyl ether (3:1 wt/wt). The effect of the concentration of the monomer mixture on the kinetics was studied. It was found that, as the total monomers concentration ([M]0) increases, the polymerization rate increases also, and that the maximum polymerization rate is proportional to [M] 0 1.26 . Particle size increases with total monomers concentration. In all cases, final average particle diameter was less than 50 nm. Particle number density is independent of total monomers concentration. A mathematical model that takes into account the partition of monomers between the different phases during polymerization using a minimum of adjustable parameters was applied to simulate the experimental data. A correlation for the radical desorption coefficient, which is a function of the rate of monomer chain transfer and of the probability of desorption, was used in the model. Radical capture by micelles and particles was assumed to occur by diffusion. The model takes into account both micellar and homogeneous nucleation. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results was observed. © 2010 Springer-Verlag
Synthesis of polypyrrole nanoparticles by oil-in-water microemulsion polymerization with narrow size distribution
Conductive spherical polypyrrole nanoparticles were obtained by polymerization in oil-in-water (o/w) microemulsions using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as anionic surfactant, ethanol as co-surfactant, and potassium persulfate (KPS, 0.017 wt.%) as oxidizing agent. The average particle diameter (Dp) of the nanoparticles was between 38 and 45 nm with narrow particle size distributions (D w/D n∈<∈1.2). Dp increases with the ethanol concentration due to the intercalation between the polar heads of SDS, promoting instability of the nanoparticles and some coagulation. In this work, low surfactant concentration was used, and the molar ratio of the oxidizing agent to monomer was 8.5∈×∈10-3, a value much lower compared with others reported in the literature. Increasing the ethanol concentration in the recipes enhanced the conductive properties of the polymers due to the high π-conjugation length obtained. © 2011 Springer-Verlag
