    Daytime turbulent exchange between the Amazon forest and the atmosphere

    Detailed observations of turbulence just above and below the crown of the Amazon rain forest during the wet season are presented. The forest canopy is shown to remove high frequency turbulent fluctuations while passing lower frequencies. Filter characteristics of turbulent transfer into the Amazon rain forest canopy are quantified. Simple empirical relations that relate observed turbulent heat fluxes to horizontal wind variance are presented. Changes in the amount of turbulent coupling between the forest and the boundary layer associated with deep convective clouds are presented both as statistical averages and as a series of case studies. These convective processes during the rainy season are shown to alter the diurnal course of turbulent fluxes. In wake of giant coastal systems, no significant heat or moisture fluxes occur for up to a day after the event. Radar data is used to demonstrate that even small raining clouds are capable of evacuating the canopy of substances normally trapped by persistent static stability near the forest floor. Recovery from these events can take more than an hour, even during mid-day. In spite of the ubiquitous presence of clouds and frequent rain during this season, the average horizontal wind speed spectrum is well described by dry CBL similarity hypotheses originally found to apply in flat terrain

    PHYSIOLOGICAL QUALITY OF PROCESSED, REPROCESSED, AND STORED SORGHUM SEEDS: IMPACT OF A DENSIMETRIC TABLE

    ABSTRACT Sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a crop of paramount importance for Brazil, used in human and animal food. Considering the reduced number of studies on the influence of using a densimetric table in seed processing and its respective reprocessing to the equipment, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of processed sorghum seeds reprocessed in a densimetric table and stored for three months. The treatments consisted of four collection points in the terminal part of the densimetric table, representing the processing material: upper part (P1), upper middle part (P2), middle part (P3), and lower part (D). Subsequently, the samples that were reprocessed in the table came from P3 and were divided into the upper part, which was followed to bagging (P3R1), and the lower part (P3R2), which followed for disposal, totaling six treatments. Storage was performed in a refrigerated environment, using a completely randomized design, with the means being compared by Tukey’s test at 5%. We concluded that the reprocessing of sorghum seeds in the densimetric table can improve the physical quality of a lot due to its standardization at the end of the stages, contributing to the improvement of the physiological quality and use of the material that would be discarded. The equipment performance allows the removal of seed fractions with lower apparent specific mass and promotes positive stratifications in the physiological quality of sorghum seed lots

    Measurements of CO2 exchange over a woodland savanna (Cerrado Sensu stricto) in southeast Brasil

    The technique of eddy correlation was used to measure the net ecosystem exchange over a woodland savanna (Cerrado Sensu stricto) site (Gleba Pé de Gigante) in southeast Brazil. The data set included measurements of climatological variables and soil respiration using static soil chambers. Data were collected during the period from 10 October 2000 to 30 March 2002. Measured soil respiration showed average values of 4.8 molCO2 m-2s-1 year round. Its seasonal differences varied from 2 to 8 molCO2 m-2s-1 (Q10 = 4.9) during the dry (April to August) and wet season, respectively, and was concurrent with soil temperature and moisture variability. The net ecosystem CO2 flux (NEE) variability is controlled by solar radiation, temperature and air humidity on diel course. Seasonally, soil moisture plays a strong role by inducing litterfall, reducing canopy photosynthetic activity and soil respiration. The net sign of NEE is negative (sink) in the wet season and early dry season, with rates around -25 kgC ha-1day-1, and values as low as 40 kgC ha-1day-1. NEE was positive (source) during most of the dry season, and changed into negative at the onset of rainy season. At critical times of soil moisture stress during the late dry season, the ecosystem experienced photosynthesis during daytime, although the net sign is positive (emission). Concurrent with dry season, the values appeared progressively positive from 5 to as much as 50 kgC ha-1day-1. The annual NEE sum appeared to be nearly in balance, or more exactly a small sink, equal to 0.1 0.3 tC ha-1yr-1, which we regard possibly as a realistic one, giving the constraining conditions imposed to the turbulent flux calculation, and favourable hypothesis of succession stages, climatic variability and CO2 fertilization

    Mucopolysaccharidosis I, II, and VI: Brief review and guidelines for treatment

    Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare genetic diseases caused by the deficiency of one of the lysosomal enzymes involved in the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) breakdown pathway. This metabolic block leads to the accumulation of GAG in various organs and tissues of the affected patients, resulting in a multisystemic clinical picture, sometimes including cognitive impairment. Until the beginning of the XXI century, treatment was mainly supportive. Bone marrow transplantation improved the natural course of the disease in some types of MPS, but the morbidity and mortality restricted its use to selected cases. The identification of the genes involved, the new molecular biology tools and the availability of animal models made it possible to develop specific enzyme replacement therapies (ERT) for these diseases. At present, a great number of Brazilian medical centers from all regions of the country have experience with ERT for MPS I, II, and VI, acquired not only through patient treatment but also in clinical trials. Taking the three types of MPS together, over 200 patients have been treated with ERT in our country. This document summarizes the experience of the professionals involved, along with the data available in the international literature, bringing together and harmonizing the information available on the management of these severe and progressive diseases, thus disclosing new prospects for Brazilian patients affected by these conditions

    Eddy correlation measurements of energy partition for Amazonian forest

    Measurements of energy partition for Amazonian forest made with novel eddy correlation equipment are presented for eight dry days in September 1983. These are interpreted to provide estimates of the aerodynamic and surface resistance for this vegetation type. Daily total evaporation for a transpiring canopy accounts for 70% of the available radiant energy, and is two thirds of conventional estimates of potential evaporation. The results are used to provide an initial calibration of a simple, physically based model of daily evaporation for Amazonian rain forest. Copyright © 1984 Royal Meteorological Societ
