    A Functional Model of Kitsch and Art: Linking Aesthetic Appreciation to the Dynamics of Social Motivation

    With the advent of modernity, change and novelty have become the core values of artistic production. At the same time the derogatory term “kitsch” was coined to contrast truly ground-breaking artistic achievements. In this article, we argue that kitsch and avant-garde art ideally represent two complementary types of aesthetic experience: a fluent one that allows for immediate emotional gratification (kitsch) and a disfluent one that requires cognitive elaboration (art). We make a case that preferences for the one or the other are dynamically related to a set of conflicting needs which constitute the basic dilemma of human attachment behavior: needs for safety and intimacy versus needs for arousal and autonomy. Based on the Zurich Model of Social Motivation we hypothesize that social distance regulation and aesthetic liking are synchronized via notions of self-efficacy and autonomy: Whenever we feel safe and self-sufficient, an appetence for arousal (curiosity) is likely to arise that increases our interest in unfamiliar conspecifics as well as in innovative, cognitively challenging aesthetic stimuli (art). By contrast, when we feel vulnerable and dependent, a longing for safety and relatedness (nostalgia) attracts us not only to familiar and trustworthy individuals but also to conventional aesthetic stimuli charged with positive emotions (kitsch). This theoretical framework offers an integrative perspective on dynamics of aesthetic liking in that it unites a wide variety of phenomena from anthropology, developmental, and cognitive psychology with concepts and findings from art history, sociology of art, and empirical aesthetics

    The Sarrazin effect: the presence of absurd statements in conspiracy theories makes canonical information less plausible

    Reptile prime ministers and flying Nazi saucers—extreme and sometimes off-wall conclusion are typical ingredients of conspiracy theories. While individual differences are a common research topic concerning conspiracy theories, the role of extreme statements in the process of acquiring and passing on conspiratorial stories has not been regarded in an experimental design so far. We identified six morphological components of conspiracy theories empirically. On the basis of these content categories a set of narrative elements for a 9/11 story was compiled. These elements varied systematically in terms of conspiratorial allegation, i.e., they contained official statements concerning the events of 9/11, statements alleging to a conspiracy limited in time and space as well as extreme statements indicating an all-encompassing cover-up. Using the method of narrative construction, 30 people were given a set of cards with these statements and asked to construct the course of events of 9/11 they deem most plausible. When extreme statements were present in the set, the resulting stories were more conspiratorial; the number of official statements included in the narrative dropped significantly, whereas the self-assessment of the story's plausibility did not differ between conditions. This indicates that blatant statements in a pool of information foster the synthesis of conspiracy theories on an individual level. By relating these findings to one of Germany's most successful (and controversial) non-fiction books, we refer to the real-world dangers of this effect

    Reliability of IMU-Derived Temporal Gait Parameters in Neurological Diseases

    Evaluating gait is part of every neurological movement disorder assessment. Generally, the physician assesses the patient based on their experience, but nowadays inertial measurement units (IMUs) are also often integrated in the assessment. Instrumented gait analysis has a longstanding tradition and temporal parameters are used to compare patient groups or trace disease progression over time. However, the day-to-day variability needs to be considered especially in specific patient cohorts. The aim of the study was to examine day-to-day variability of temporal gait parameters of two experimental conditions in a cohort of neurogeriatric patients using data extracted from a lower back-worn IMU. We recruited 49 participants (24 women (age: 78 years ± 6 years, BMI = 25.1 kg/m2 and 25 men (age: 77 years ± 6 years, BMI = 26.5 kg/m2 )) from the neurogeriatric ward. Two gait distances (4 m and 20 m) were performed during the first session and repeated the following day. To evaluate reliability, the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC2,k) and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated for the number of steps, step time, stride time, stance time, swing time, double limb support time, double limb support time variability, stride time variability and stride time asymmetry. The temporal gait parameters showed poor to moderate reliability with mean ICC and mean MDC95% values of 0.57 ± 0.18 and 52% ± 53%, respectively. Overall, only four out of the nine computed temporal gait parameters showed high relative reliability and good absolute reliability values. The reliability increased with walking distance. When only investigating steady-state walking during the 20 m walking condition, the relative and absolute reliability improved again. The most reliable parameters were swing time, stride time, step time and stance time. Study results demonstrate that reliability is an important factor to consider when working with IMU derived gait parameters in specific patient cohorts. This advocates for a careful parameter selection as not all parameters seem to be suitable when assessing gait in neurogeriatric patients

    El Niño variability off Peru during the last 20,000 years

    Here we present a high-resolution marine sediment record from the El Niño region off the coast of Peru spanning the last 20,000 years. Sea surface temperature, photosynthetic pigments, and a lithic proxy for El Niño flood events on the continent are used as paleo–El Niño–Southern Oscillation proxy data. The onset of stronger El Niño activity in Peru started around 17,000 calibrated years before the present, which is later than modeling experiments show but contemporaneous with the Heinrich event 1. Maximum El Niño activity occurred during the early and late Holocene, especially during the second and third millennium B.P. The recurrence period of very strong El Niño events is 60–80 years. El Niño events were weak before and during the beginning of the Younger Dryas, during the middle of the Holocene, and during medieval times. The strength of El Niño flood events during the last millennium has positive and negative relationships to global and Northern Hemisphere temperature reconstructions

The currently available methods for diagnosis and for the evaluation of treatment in this vulnerable cohort are limited. The aims of the ComOn (COgnitive and Motor interactions in the Older populatioN) study are (i) to define quantitative markers with clinical relevance for motor and cognitive deficits, (ii) to investigate the interaction between both motor and cognitive deficits and (iii) to assess health status as well as treatment outcome of 1000 geriatric inpatients in hospitals of Kiel (Germany), Brescia (Italy), Porto (Portugal), Curitiba (Brazil) and Bochum (Germany). Methods: This is a prospective, explorative observational multi-center study. In addition to the comprehensive geriatric assessment, quantitative measures of reduced mobility and motor and cognitive deficits are performed before and after a two week's inpatient stay. Components of the assessment are mobile technology-based assessments of gait, balance and transfer performance, neuropsychological tests, frailty, sarcopenia, autonomic dysfunction and sensation, and questionnaires to assess behavioral deficits, activities of daily living, quality of life, fear of falling and dysphagia. Structural MRI and an unsupervised 24/7 home assessment of mobility are performed in a subgroup of participants. The study will also investigate the minimal clinically relevant change of the investigated parameters.
