Allotments are to be found everywhere in Russia’s urban landscape. The importance of water accumulation of snow cover measurements in mountainous regions of Slovenia

    Get PDF
Snow cover is a frequent phenomenon in Slovenia and even in the lowlands of the interior regions, it can last for several weeks. The properties of snow and winter weather after the snow cover has formed, determine the load of snow upon houses, trees and other objects. Water accumulation of snow cover (WASC) gives us the amount of water in snow and therefore also the weight of snow. Deep snow cover can soak its own melting water from the surface, so WASC does not decrease as fast as one would conclude from the intensity of melting. WASC is also a good indicator of winter precipitation where precipitation stations are rare and precipitation gradients are big. The researches carried out in the winter 2005/2006 showed that precipitation in the central part of the Bohinj ridge in the Slovenian Julian Alps, was about 50% higher than at its northern edge, where the meteorological station Vogel is located

The SHAPE ENERGY Summer School - interdisciplinary debates with PhD researchers

The European Union (EU) funded Horizon 2020 ‘Social sciences and Humanities for Advancing Policy in European ENERGY’ (SHAPE ENERGY) project organised an international summer school for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) working within energy-social sciences and humanities (energy-SSH). This multidisciplinary summer school – entitled ‘Advancing Energy Policy Summer School’ – focused on how energy-SSH research can contribute to tackling the many energy-related challenges in Europe. Key energy topics were discussed with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity and on the translation of academic research into policy and practice, including: • Global energy dilemmas; • Energy transition; • Public engagement and energy citizenship; • Consumption and social practices; • Energy poverty. Advanced researchers and practitioners involved in leading European energy projects were presenting their expertise and the role of energy-SSH research for policy and practice while the summer school was also an opportunity to meet and collaborate with other ESRs from a range of disciplines. Analysing the outputs of the summer school allowed us to draw attention to four recommendations, which could serve as points of reflection during the organisation of any future ESR and/or interdisciplinary SHAPE ENERGY activities: • Make more explicit/visible the ‘implicits’ of the various disciplines and, while proposing a workshop, consider more carefully the time needed by each discipline to produce a ‘rigorous’ outcome/output. • Pay attention to the fact that mainstream economic thinking innervates all disciplines. This element should be taken into greater consideration in prospective research as it influences the way the future is envisioned and closes alternative paths that could have been taken. • Better consider the cultural background of the participants when asking them to work together, or at least make more explicit not only the rules of the exercise but also the cultural implicit behind it. • Be sensitive to the gender and age of the participants, as these obviously play a role in how individuals express and put themselves forward. As it is crucial to devote time and resources, and to employ experts when implementing gender perspectives in research programmes and policy-making; more attention should be paid to this point as well as to how older researchers might influence the youngest

Persistence of pesticides in water from farm plots recently converted to organic farming

    Get PDF
In Europe, the pervasive use of pesticides in agricultural areas has led to the deterioration of the quality of groundwater and surface water, resources earmarked for human consumption. The aim of the European Water Framework Directive 91/474 is to restore the “good ecological status” of surface water and to protect water that might be used for drinking water production by 2015. Interactions within the soil determine the fate of environmental pesticides. Water resource contamination may persist for a long time after the last use of pesticides (i.e., atrazine). Pesticide persistence is highly variable. The fate and persistence of pesticides in the environment depend on agricultural pesticide practices and on soil interactions, which are interrelated physical, chemical and biological processes that are often sitespecific. This study, which is taking place at INRA’s Mirecourt Experimental Station in the Lorraine region of France, will make it possible to evaluate the persistence and environmental resilience of pesticides in water from plots recently converted to organic farming, within the framework of the WFD. A database includes all pesticide practices from 1969 to 2004, the year of the last treatment. It is hoped that the Mirecourt study, five years after the end of pesticide use, will shed light on the long-term persistence of pesticides in water resources

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL ASSISTANCE BENEFITS IN CASH ON ENTERING THE REGIONAL LABOR MARKET

It is a welfare state’s duty to provide for citizens without income or citizens with such low income that does not cover their basic needs. Slovenia has many social transfers to protect its citizens from poverty, one of which is social assistance benefits in cash. Many unemployed people are beneficiaries of this assistance, which can also lead to recipients becoming inactive, since working for a minimum wage is not worth it. The purpose of this thesis is to determine what is the impact of social assistance benefits in cash among unemployed on entering the labor market and whether it encourages the recipients to seek employment or they prefer to remain inactive. The topic was studied in two different regions in Slovenia. Publicly available statistical data were used for the research. In analyzing the statistical data, we found that social assistance benefits in cash has no significant impact on employment, as the number of unemployed people is decreasing, as well as the number of recipients. This was also observed in closely researched market of the Murska Sobota regional office, which is considered to be a region with high rate of registered unemployment and a large number of recipients of social assistance benefits in cash, and Nova Gorica, where the condition of the labor market and social welfare is below the national average. A set of conditions need to be met in order to receive this type of assistance, however, this is not a long-term assistance that could be received indefinitely, therefore its impact on employment is minimal. We cannot know for certain how many people truly need this type of assistance and whether they are reluctant to find a job because of it. The state is already working on the issue with various incentive programs to encourage people to re-enter the labor market
