Star-shaped oligofluorene truxene macromolecules – synthesis and properties as a function of alkyl chain length (PH-11611YP)

    Get PDF
Star-shaped oligofluorene truxenes are very promising materials and have demonstrated excellent properties as the gain medium in organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs).1-10 Alkyl chains in oligofluorene truxenes act as solubilizing groups as well as spacers to prevent intermolecular π-π stacking that leads to quenching of the light emission. A new series of star-shaped systems analogous to hexyl oligofluorene truxenes11 with alkyl chains of different lengths (butyl chains and octyl chains) was synthesized. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of alkyl chain length on the film-forming properties of oligofluorene-truxene materials and, as a result, on their optoelectronic properties for applications as the gain medium in OSLs

The star-shaped molecules have a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core with a range of side arm lengths which control the photophysical properties. The molecules emit red light with photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 22 - 56 %. Thin films of the most promising BODIPY molecules were used as a red colour converter for visible light communications. The film enabled colour conversion with a modulation bandwidth of 73 MHz, which is 16 times higher than of a typical phosphor used in LED lighting systems. A data rate of 370 Mbit/s was demonstrated using On-Off keying modulation in a free space link with a distance of ~15 cm.PostprintPublisher PDFPeer reviewe

Ultralow-threshold up-converted lasing in oligofluorenes with tailored strong nonlinear absorption

Nonlinear optical response in organic semiconductors has been an attractive property for many practical applications. For frequency up-converter lasers, to date, conjugated polymers, fluorescent dyes and small organic molecules have been proposed but their performances have been severely limited due to the difficulty of simultaneously achieving strong nonlinear optical response and high performance optical gain. In this work, we show that structurally designed truxene-based star-shaped oligofluorenes exhibit strong structure-property relationships enabling enhanced nonlinear optical response with favorable optical gain performance. As the number of fluorene repeat units in each arm is increased from 3 to 6, these molecules demonstrate a two-photon absorption cross-section as high as 2200 GM, which is comparable to that of linear conjugated polymers. Tailored truxene oligomers with six fluorene units in each arm (T6) show two-photon absorption pumped amplified spontaneous emission with a threshold as low as 2.43 mJ/cm2, which is better than that of the lowest reported threshold in organic semiconductors. Furthermore, we show a frequency up-converted laser using the newly designed and synthesized star-shaped oligomer T6 with a threshold as low as 3.1 mJ/cm2, which is more than an order of magnitude lower than that of any conjugated polymer. Thus, these oligomers with enhanced nonlinear optical properties are highly attractive for bio-integrated applications such as photodynamic therapy and in-vivo bio-sensing

A saturated red color converter for visible light communication using a blend of star-shaped organic semiconductors

Authors would like to acknowledge the EPSRC for financial support for the UP-VLC (EP/K00042X/1). PJS and IDWS also acknowledge Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Awards. We report a study of blends of semiconducting polymers as saturated red color converters to replace commercial phosphors in hybrid LEDs for visible light communication (VLC). By blending two star-shaped organic semiconductor molecules, we found a near complete energy transfer (> 90% efficiency) from the green-emitting truxene-cored compound T4BT-B to the red-emitting boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) cored materials. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the capability of these materials as fast color converters for VLC by measuring their intrinsic optical modulation bandwidth and data rate. The measured 3 dB modulation bandwidth of blends (~55 MHz) is more than 10 times higher than commercially available LED phosphors and also higher than the red-emitting BODIPY color converter alone in solution. The data rate achieved with this blend is 20 times higher than measured with a commercially available phosphor based color converter.PostprintPeer reviewe

Synthesis and properties of novel star-shaped oligofluorene conjugated systems with BODIPY cores

    Get PDF
Star-shaped conjugated systems with varying oligofluorene arm length and substitution patterns of the central BODIPY core have been synthesised, leading to two families of compounds, T-B1–T-B4 and Y-B1–Y-B4, with T- and Y-shaped motifs, respectively. Thermal stability, cyclic voltammetry, absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy of each member of these two families were studied in order to determine their suitability as emissive materials in photonic applications

Italian Translation and Validation of the Original ABC Taxonomy for Medication Adherence

    Get PDF
Medication adherence represents a complex and multifaceted process. Standardized terminology is essential to enable a reproducible process in various languages. The study's aim was to translate and adapt the original Ascertaining Barriers for Compliance (ABC) Taxonomy on medication adherence, first proposed in 2012, into Italian language. The study was carried out according to the Preferred Methods for Translation of the ABC Taxonomy for Medication Adherence adopted by the ESPACOMP. Key steps included: (1) a systematic literature review using PubMed and Embase according to the PRISMA Guidelines to identify published Italian terms and definitions, and Italian adherence experts; (2) a forward translation of terms and definitions; (3) panelists' selection; (4) a three-round Delphi survey. From the systematic review, 19 studies allowed detection of 4 terms, 4 definitions and 767 Italian experts. To these, Italian ESPACOMP members and experts though snowball sampling were added. The identified Italian adherence experts received the Delphi questionnaire. The Italian ABC Taxonomy was achieved after three rounds of Delphi survey by reaching at least a moderate consensus on unambiguous naming and definition of medication adherence-related terms. The Taxonomy is intended to be used in research, academic, and professional fields in order to harmonize adherence terminology and avoid confusion in comparing research findings

Side-chain influence on the mass density and refractive index of polyfluorenes and star-shaped oligofluorene truxenes

    Get PDF
The density of organic semiconductor films is an important quantity because it is related to intermolecular spacing which in turn determines the electronic and photophysical properties. We report thin film density and refractive index measurements of polyfluorenes and star-shaped oligofluorene truxene molecules. An ellipsometer and a procedure using a spectrophotometer were used to determine film thickness and mass of spin-coated films, respectively. We present a study of the effect of alkyl side-chain length on the volumetric mass density and refractive index of the materials studied. The density measured for poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene) (PF8) was 0.88 ± 0.04 g/cm3 and decreased with longer alkyl side chains. For the truxene molecule with butyl side chains (T3 butyl), we measured a density of 0.90 ± 0.04 g/cm3, which also decreased with increasing side-chain length
