Sensor, Signal, and Imaging Informatics in 2017.
Objective To summarize significant contributions to sensor, signal, and imaging informatics literature published in 2017.Methods PubMed® and Web of Science® were searched to identify the scientific publications published in 2017 that addressed sensors, signals, and imaging in medical informatics. Fifteen papers were selected by consensus as candidate best papers. Each candidate article was reviewed by section editors and at least two other external reviewers. The final selection of the four best papers was conducted by the editorial board of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook.Results The selected papers of 2017 demonstrate the important scientific advances in management and analysis of sensor, signal, and imaging information.ConclusionThe growth of signal and imaging data and the increasing power of machine learning techniques have engendered new opportunities for research in medical informatics. This synopsis highlights cutting-edge contributions to the science of Sensor, Signal, and Imaging Informatics

ObjectiveTo identify research works that exemplify recent developments in the field of sensors, signals, and imaging informatics.MethodA broad literature search was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science, supplemented with individual papers that were nominated by section editors. A predefined query made from a combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms and keywords were used to search both sources. Section editors then filtered the entire set of retrieved papers with each paper having been reviewed by two section editors. Papers were assessed on a three-point Likert scale by two section editors, rated from 0 (do not include) to 2 (should be included). Only papers with a combined score of 2 or above were considered.ResultsA search for papers was executed at the start of January 2019, resulting in a combined set of 1,459 records published in 2018 in 119 unique journals. Section editors jointly filtered the list of candidates down to 14 nominations. The 14 candidate best papers were then ranked by a group of eight external reviewers. Four papers, representing different international groups and journals, were selected as the best papers by consensus of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook editorial board.ConclusionsThe fields of sensors, signals, and imaging informatics have rapidly evolved with the application of novel artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques. Studies have been able to discover hidden patterns and integrate different types of data towards improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. However, the quality of papers varied widely without clear reporting standards for these types of models. Nevertheless, a number of papers have demonstrated useful techniques to improve the generalizability, interpretability, and reproducibility of increasingly sophisticated models
Observational Cosmology in Macroscopic Gravity
We discuss the construction of cosmological models within the framework of
Macroscopic Gravity (MG), which is a theory that models the effects of
averaging the geometry of space-time on large scales. We find new exact
spatially homogeneous and isotropic FLRW solutions to the MG field equations,
and investigate large-scale perturbations around them. We find that any
inhomogeneous perturbations to the averaged geometry are severely restricted,
but that possible anisotropies in the correlation tensor can have dramatic
consequences for the measurement of distances. These calculations are a first
step within the MG approach toward developing averaged cosmological models to a
point where they can be used to interpret real cosmological data, and hence to
provide a working alternative to the "concordance" LCDM model.Comment: 22 page
Knowledge Representation and Management 2022: Findings in Ontology Development and Applications
OBJECTIVES: To select, present, and summarize the best papers in 2022 for the Knowledge Representation and Management (KRM) section of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook.
METHODS: We conducted PubMed queries and followed the IMIA Yearbook guidelines for performing biomedical informatics literature review to select the best papers in KRM published in 2022.
RESULTS: We retrieved 1,847 publications from PubMed. We nominated 15 candidate best papers, and two of them were finally selected as the best papers in the KRM section. The topics covered by the candidate papers include ontology and knowledge graph creation, ontology applications, ontology quality assurance, ontology mapping standard, and conceptual model.
CONCLUSIONS: In the KRM best paper selection for 2022, the candidate best papers encompassed a broad range of topics, with ontology and knowledge graph creation remaining a considerable research focus
'I act this way because why?' Prior knowledges, teaching for change, imagining new masculinities
This article begins by outlining some of the prior knowledges brought by
undergraduate students to an introduction to gender studies class in the Women's
and Gender Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. I
show that, at the beginning of the course, students clearly understand gender to refer to
women and femininity, imagining femininity (but not masculinity) to be responsive to
social change. I suggest that, in the face of these prior knowledges, it is important to
focus on masculinity as performance, as a cultural artefact and one that is deeply
harmful to South African men. Student experiences of this teaching and learning
suggest that it offers possibilities for imagining men as allies and beneficiaries - rather
than enemies - in the struggle for gender equity
The impact of world heritage site designation on local communities - A case study of Ogimachi, Shirakawa-mura, Japan
The paper examines economic, socio-cultural, physical and attitudinal changes in/around World Heritage Site (WHS) Ogimachi since WHS designation from the local communities' standpoint and explores the background of these changes and views. Both positive and negative changes for local communities in/around WHS Ogimachi after WHS listing are identified. There are three main factors behind these changes: the extensive and rapid tourism development after WHS inscription; the high level of appeal of a WHS status for domestic tourists; and local people's attitudes towards conservation of the cultural environment and WHS status. In addition to its conservation plan, WHS Ogimachi must have a comprehensive tourism management plan for its successful future as a place to live, as a WHS and a tourist destination

ABA Section of Taxation Report of the Task Force on Judicial Deference
Recognizing the need for clearer standards regarding the degree of deference that the federal courts should confer on guidance issued by the Department of Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service, the Tax Section, under the direction of former ABA Section of Taxation Chair Pamela F. Olson, created a Task Force on Judicial Deference in 2000. It was charged with the mission of not only examining the state of the law pertaining to judicial deference across the broad range of administrative pronouncements issued by the Treasury and the IRS, but also sharing its conclusions and possible solutions with the Section of Taxation and the profession at large. Based on the agency-by-agency approach required by the Supreme Court in United States v. Mead Corporation, 533 U.S. 218(2001), the Task Force analyzed the differences in the degree of authority and degree of deliberation underlying the various forms of such guidance and the impact of those differences on whether, and to what degree, judicial deference is appropriate.
