Can agricultural cultivation methods influence the healthfulness of crops for foods
The aim of the current study was to investigate if there are any health effects of long-term consumption of organically grown crops using a rat model. Crops were retrieved over two years from along-term field trial at three different locations in Denmark, using three different cultivation systems(OA, organic based on livestock manure; OB, organic based on green manure; and C, conventional with mineral fertilizers and pesticides)with two field replicates. The cultivation system had an impact on the nutritional quality, affecting γ-tocopherol, some amino acids, and fatty acid composition. Additionally, the nutritional quality was affected by harvest year and location. However, harvest year and location rather than cultivation system affected the measured health biomarkers. In conclusion, the differences in dietary treatments composed of ingredients from different cultivation systems did not lead to significant differences in the measured health biomarkers, except for a significant difference in plasma IgGl evels

Overexpression of the MYB29 transcription factor affects aliphatic glucosinolate synthesis in Brassica oleracea
Isothiocyanates, the bio-active hydrolysis products of glucosinolates, naturally produced by several Brassicaceae species, play an important role in human health and agriculture. This study aims at correlating the content of aliphatic glucosinolates to the expression of genes involved in their synthesis in Brassica oleracea, and perform functional analysis of BoMYB29 gene. To this purpose, three genotypes were used: a sprouting broccoli, a cabbage, and a wild genotype (Winspit), a high glucosinolate containing accession. Winspit showed the highest transcript level of BoMYB28, BoMYB29 and BoAOP2 genes, and BoAOP2 expression was positively correlated with that of the two MYB genes. Further analyses of the aliphatic glucosinolates also showed a positive correlation between the expression of BoAOP2 and the production of sinigrin and gluconapin in Winspit. The Winspit BoMYB29 CDS was cloned and overexpressed in Winspit and in the DH AG1012 line. Overexpressing Winspit plants produced higher quantities of alkenyl glucosinolates, such as sinigrin. Conversely, the DH AG1012 transformants showed a higher production of methylsulphinylalkyl glucosinolates, including glucoraphanin, and, despite an up-regulation of the aliphatic glucosinolate genes, no increase in alkenyl glucosinolates. The latter may be explained by the absence of a functional AOP2 gene in DH AG1012. Nevertheless, an extract of DH AG1012 lines overexpressing BoMYB29 provided a chemoprotective effect on human colon cells. This work exemplifies how the genetic diversity of B. oleracea may be used by breeders to select for higher expression of transcription factors for glucosinolate biosynthesis to improve its natural, health-promoting properties
Circular Polarization in Pulsar Integrated Profiles: Updates
We update the systematic studies of circular polarization in integrated pulse
profiles by Han et al (1998). Data of circular polarization profiles are
compiled. Sense reversals can occur in core or cone components, or near the
intersection between components. The correlation between the sense of circular
polarization and the sense of position angle variation for conal-double pulsars
is confirmed with a much large database. Circular polarization of some pulsars
has clear changes with frequency. Circular polarization of millisecond pulsars

Safe-and-sustainable-by-design framework based on a prospective life cycle assessment: lessons learned from a nano-titanium dioxide case study
Safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD) is a concept that takes a systems approach by integrating safety, sustainability, and functionality throughout a product's the life cycle. This paper proposes a framework based on a prospective life cycle assessment for early safety and sustainability assessment. The framework's purpose is to identify environmental sustainability and toxicity hotspots early in the innovation process for future SSbD applicability. If this is impossible, key performance indicators are assessed. Environmental sustainability aspects, such as global warming potential (GWP) and cumulative energy demand (CED), and toxicity aspects, such as human toxicity potential and freshwater ecotoxicity potential, were assessed upon applying the framework on a case study. The case study regarded using nano-titanium dioxide (P25-TiO2) or a modified nano-coated version (Cu2O-coated/P25-TiO2) as photocatalysts to produce hydrogen from water using sunlight. Although there was a decrease in environmental impact (GWP and CED), the modified nano-coated version had a relatively higher level of human toxicity and freshwater eco-toxicity. For the presented case study, SSbD alternatives need to be considered that improve the photocatalytic activity but are not toxic to the environment. This case study illustrates the importance of performing an early safety and environmental sustainability assessment to avoid the development of toxic alternatives.Environmental Biolog
The combined impact of urban heat island, thermal bridge effect of buildings and future climate change on the potential overwintering of Phlebotomus species in a Central European metropolis
Leishmaniasis is one of the most important emerging vector-borne diseases in Western Eurasia. Although winter minimum temperatures limit the present geographical distribution of the vector Phlebotomus species, the heat island effect of the cities and the anthropogenic heat emission together may provide the appropriate environment for the overwintering of sand flies. We studied the climate tempering effect of thermal bridges and the heat island effect in Budapest, Hungary. Thermal imaging was used to measure the heat surplus of heat bridges. The winter heat island effect of the city was evaluated by numerical analysis of the measurements of the Aqua sensor of satellite Terra. We found that the surface temperature of thermal bridges can be at least 3-7 °C higher than the surrounding environment. The heat emission of thermal bridges and the urban heat island effect together can cause at least 10 °C higher minimum ambient temperature in winter nights than the minimum temperature of the peri-urban areas. This milder micro-climate of the built environment can enable the potential overwintering of some important European Phlebotomus species. The anthropogenic heat emission of big cities may explain the observed isolated northward populations of Phlebotomus ariasi in Paris and Phlebotomus neglectus in the agglomeration of Budapest
A 5-GHz Southern Hemisphere VLBI Survey of Compact Radio Sources, 2
We report the results of a 5-GHz southern-hemisphere snapshot VLBI observation of a sample of blazars. The observations were performed with the Southern Hemisphere VLBI Network plus the Shanghai station in 1993 May. Twenty-three flat-spectrum, radio-loud sources were imaged. These are the first VLBI images for 15 of the sources. Eight of the sources are EGRET (> 100 MeV) gamma-ray sources. The milliarcsecond morphology shows a core-jet structure for 12 sources, and a single compact core for the remaining 11. No compact doubles were seen. Compared with other radio images at different epochs and/or different frequencies, 3 core-jet blazars show evidence of bent jets, and there is some evidence for superluminal motion in the cases of 2 blazars. Rotation measure variations for 20 millisecond pulsars
We report on variations in the mean position angle of the 20 millisecond
pulsars being observed as part of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA)
project. It is found that the observed variations are dominated by changes in
the Faraday rotation occurring in the Earth's ionosphere. Two ionospheric
models are used to correct for the ionospheric contribution and it is found
that one based on the International Reference Ionosphere gave the best results.
Little or no significant long-term variation in interstellar RM was found with
limits typically about 0.1 rad m yr in absolute value. In a few
cases, apparently significant RM variations over timescales of a few 100 days
or more were seen. These are unlikely to be due to localised magnetised regions
crossing the line of sight since the implied magnetic fields are too high. Most
probably they are statistical fluctuations due to random spatial and temporal
variations in the interstellar electron density and magnetic field along the

Diastolic function measurements and diagnostic consequences: a comparison of pulsed wave- and color-coded tissue Doppler imaging
Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) plays an important role in assessing diastolic function using echocardiography. However, two different methods [pulsed wave (PW-TDI) and color-coded (CC-TDI)] are currently used. We aimed to compare both measurements. We included 114 patients that were referred to our echocardiography department for evaluation of diastolic left ventricular function. In these patients, we sequentially measured tissue velocities of basal lateral and septal myocardium of the left ventricle in an apical four-chamber view with both PW-TDI and CC-TDI. Our cohort consisted of a heterogeneous group of patients with and without a history of cardiac disease. Mean age of the patients was 52 +/- A 16.7 years, and 62% were males. We found a strong correlation between PW-TDI- and CC-TDI-derived myocardial velocities (r = 0.93; p = 0.001). However, E' (mean of lateral and septal) velocities measured with PW-TDI were consistently higher compared to CC-TDI values [PW-TDI E' 10.3 +/- A 3.9 (SD) cm/s vs. CC-TDI E' 7.7 +/- A 3.1 cm/s; p <0.001]. From these data, we calculated that the relation between E' measured with PW-TDI and CC-TDI can be described as: E' (PW-TDI) = 1.25 + 1.17 x E' (CC-TDI). Consequently, E/E' measured with PW-TDI was consistently lower compared with CC-TDI (9.1 +/- A 3.1 vs. 12.5 +/- A 5.7; p <0.001) From these data, we calculated that the relation between E/E' measured with PW-TDI and CC-TDI can be described as: E/E' (PW-TDI) = 2.13 + 0.56 x E/E' (CC-TDI). Despite a strong correlation, tissue velocities measured with PW-TDI will yield higher values as compared with CC-TDI. This should be taken into account when defining cut-off values for the evaluation of diastolic function
Behavior of high dose O+-implanted Si/Ge/Si structures
The synthesis of a buried oxide layer in multilayer Si/Ge/Si structures by the implantation of high doses of 200 keV O+ ions is studied by Rutherford backscattering analysis. The presence of Ge is found to have a minimal effect upon the mass transport of excess oxygen and interstitial silicon. Infrared transmission spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that the oxygen atoms bond preferentially to silicon forming silicon dioxide and SiOx, where x<2, with no evidence for Ge—O bonding
Testing relationships: ethical arguments for screening with HbA1C
Since the 1990s, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C) has been the gold standard for monitoring glycaemic control in people diagnosed as having either type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Discussions are underway about diagnosing diabetes mellitus on the basis of HbA1C titres and using HbA1C tests to screen for T2DM. These discussions have focused on the relative benefits for individual patients, with some attention directed towards reduced costs to healthcare systems and benefits to society. We argue that there are strong ethical reasons for adopting HbA1C-based diagnosis and T2DM screening that have not yet been articulated. The rationale includes the differential impact of HbA1C-based diabetic testing on disadvantaged groups, and what we are beginning to learn about HbA1C vis-à-vis population health. Although it is arguable that screening must primarily benefit the individual, using HbA1C to diagnose and screen for T2DM may promote a more just distribution of health resources and lead to advances in investigating, monitoring and tackling the social determinants of health
