Reverberating activity in a neural network with distributed signal transmission delays

    Get PDF
It is known that an identical delay in all transmission lines can destabilize macroscopic stationarity of a neural network, causing oscillation or chaos. We analyze the collective dynamics of a network whose intra-transmission delays are distributed in time. Here, a neuron is modeled as a discrete-time threshold element that responds in an all-or-nothing manner to a linear sum of signals that arrive after delays assigned to individual transmission lines. Even though transmission delays are distributed in time, a whole network exhibits a single collective oscillation with a period close to the average transmission delay. The collective oscillation can not only be a simple alternation of the consecutive firing and resting, but also nontrivially sequenced series of firing and resting, reverberating in a certain period of time. Moreover, the system dynamics can be made quasiperiodic or chaotic by changing the distribution of delays.Comment: 8pages, 9figure

Scaling and Universality in Models of Step Bunching: The "C+-C-" Model

We study further the recently introduced [Ranguelov et al., Comptes Rendus de l'Acad. Bulg. des Sci. 60, 4 (2007) 389] "C+-C-" model of step flow crystal growth over wide range of model parameters. The basic assumption of the model is that the reference ("equilibrium") densities used to compute the supersaturation might be different on either side of a step. We obtain the condition for linear stability of the whole step train in the form CL/CR>1 (L/R stands for left/right in a descending from left to right step train). Further we integrate numerically the equations of step motion to monitor the bunching process in the long times limit. Thus we obtain the exact size- and time- scaling of the step bunches including the numerical prefactors. We show that in a broad range of parameters the morphology is characterized with appearance of the minimal interstep distance in the bunch in the beginning of the bunches (at the trailing edge of the bunch) and may be described by a single universality class, different from those already generated by continuum theories [Krug et al., PRB 71, 045412].Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure

When discovered by local hunters on Guam, Yokoi was widely reported as a ‘no surrender man’ who survived, living up to the old Japanese military code of honour. This book sheds light on the reality of the war in the Pacific while addressing some key issues concerning the nature of Japanese culture in modern times.; Readership: General/trad

This study aims to analyze the effect of dividend policy, investment decisions, funding decisions, and financial performance on firm value. Using a quantitative research approach, data were collected using documentation techniques from company financial reports. The research sample was 45 pharmaceutical companies in the Indonesia Stock Exchange used the purposive sampling technique, while data analysis and hypothesis testing used Multiple Linear Regression. The results of the analysis show that dividend policy, investment decisions and financial performance have a positive effect on firm value, while funding decisions do not affect firm value

DID UN PROMOTE THE RIGHT TO SELFDETERMINATION TO THE PEOPLE IN EAST TIMOR?

    Get PDF
Started 1998, Indonesia faced political instability due to the social unrest and the step down of Indonesian President Soeharto. The condition impacted into the East Timor condition to have self-determination right to have its independent. Indeed, historically The Dutch colonialized Indonesia; meanwhile East Timor was colonialized by the Portugal. Therefore, the creation of UNAMET initiated by the United Nations to give the right to the people in East Timor for referendum whether they choose to be independent or still be apart of Indonesia. This paper will try to prove that UNAMET was not promoted the right to self-determination for people in East Timor for several reasons. Firstly, the peace keeping forces of the UN in East Timor were led by Australia, which had a special interest to East Timor regarding the East Timor Gap Project. Secondly, UNAMET staff proved to be partial in supporting the pro-independence and intimidate the people in society who supported the integration with Indonesia by attacking the members of society who flew the Indonesian flag. Thirdly, the United Nations proved they were only there as a means to protect the US and Australian interests by postponing the referendum through the United Nations Security Council, which created more instability among the people in East Timor

Re-Thinking US Foreign Policy in Southeast Asia: is IT Containment Against China or Against Terrorism?

    Get PDF
The dynamic of the United States foreign policy toward Southeast Asia is very much affected and influenced by the rise of China and the terrorism thread in 21st century. In the era of first Bush Administration, US foreign policy was focusing on the issue of terrorism after the 9/11 tragedy. In this issue, US was engaging Indonesia and Philippines in terms of military cooperation and security. Meanwhile, in the second Bush Administration the main focus of US foreign policy was flipped into the containment against China due to the influence of China into Southeast Asia in terms of economics (free trade agreement). In the era of Obama first administration, US eventually prioritized the SEA region both bilaterally and multilaterally, which is different from the Bush administration. However, the scope of the policy remains, the same to the previous one, on the containment against China and terrorism. U.S under Obama remains emphasis on the three main elements of the containment policy; economic, alliance/partnership and diplomacy with more concentration than the Bush's. It can be concluded that this enhanced US posture in Southeast Asia is Washington's recognition that ASEAN is the core of both regional security and economic activities and that the US must play a major role in regional affairs as well as continuing to strengthen bilateral ties
