    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for monitoring soil erosion in Morocco

    This article presents an environmental remote sensing application using a UAV that is specifically aimed at reducing the data gap between field scale and satellite scale in soil erosion monitoring in Morocco. A fixed-wing aircraft type Sirius I (MAVinci, Germany) equipped with a digital system camera (Panasonic) is employed. UAV surveys are conducted over different study sites with varying extents and flying heights in order to provide both very high resolution site-specific data and lower-resolution overviews, thus fully exploiting the large potential of the chosen UAV for multi-scale mapping purposes. Depending on the scale and area coverage, two different approaches for georeferencing are used, based on high-precision GCPs or the UAV’s log file with exterior orientation values respectively. The photogrammetric image processing enables the creation of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and ortho-image mosaics with very high resolution on a sub-decimetre level. The created data products were used for quantifying gully and badland erosion in 2D and 3D as well as for the analysis of the surrounding areas and landscape development for larger extents

    Monitoring soil erosion in the Souss basin, Morocco, with a multiscale object-based remote sensing approach using UAV and satellite data

    This article presents a multiscale approach for detecting and monitoring soil erosion phenomena (i.e. gully erosion) in the agro-industrial area around the city of Taroudannt, Souss basin, Morocco. The study area is characterized as semi-arid with an annual average precipitation of 200 mm. Water scarcity, high population dynamics and changing land use towards huge areas of irrigation farming present numerous threats to sustainability. The agro-industry produces citrus fruits and vegetables in monocropping, mainly for the European market. Badland areas strongly affected by gully erosion border the agricultural areas as well as residential areas. To counteract the significant loss of land, land-leveling measures are attempted to create space for plantations and greenhouses. In order to develop sustainable approaches to limit gully growth the detection and monitoring of gully systems is fundamental. Specific gully sites are monitored with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) taking small-format aerial photographs (SFAP). This enables extremely high-resolution analysis (SFAP resolution: 2-10 cm) of the actual size of the gully channels as well as a detailed continued surveillance of their growth. Transferring the methodology on a larger scale using Quickbird satellite data (resolution: 60 cm) leads to the possibility of a large-scale analysis of the whole area around the city of Taroudannt (Area extent: ca. 350 km²). The results will then reveal possible relationships of gully growth and agro-industrial management and may even illustrate further interdependencies. The main objective is the identification of areas with high gully-erosion risk due to non-sustainable land use and the development of mitigation strategies for the study area

    Spigelian-cryptorchidism syndrome: a case report and discussion of the basic elements in a possibly new congenital syndrome

    Pediatric cases of Spigelian hernias are rare. Only a few reports on this condition, in combination with ipsilateral cryptorchidism and testis in the hernia sac, have been published. We report on Spigelian hernia in a 3-week-old boy containing both the ipsilateral testis, without a gubernaculum and an incarcerated loop of the small intestine. It has been suggested that the combination of Spigelian hernia and ipsilateral cryptorchidism is part of a new syndrome. We discuss whether the lack of a gubernaculum and an inguinal canal reported in other similar cases may be additional elements of this new syndrome. We present a comprehensive overview of pediatric patients with Spigelian-cryptorchidism syndrome reported in the English language literature. In 75% of male infants with Spigelian hernia, there is an associated ipsilateral cryptorchidism, and in 87% of these patients, the testis is found inside the hernia sac. Thus, the surgeon dealing with a congenital Spigelian hernia should look for an undescended testis and be prepared to find it in the hernia sac

    Surgery in intractable epilepsy - physicians' recommendations and patients' decisions

    Objectives: To identify demographic and clinical variables independently associated with patients' decisions against their physicians' recommendations for resective epilepsy surgery or further scalp video-EEG monitoring (sca-VEM), semi-invasive (sem-)VEM with foramen ovale and/or peg electrodes, and invasive (in-)VEM. Methods: Consecutive patients, who underwent presurgical assessment with at least one sca-VEM between 2010 and 2014, were included into this retrospective analysis. Multivariate analysis was used to identify independent variables associated with patients' decisions. Results: Within the study period, 352 patients underwent 544 VEM sessions comprising 451 sca-, 36 sem-, and 57 in-VEMs. Eventually, 96 patients were recommended resective surgery, and 106 were ineligible candidates; 149 patients denied further necessary VEMs; thus, no decision could be made. After sca- or additional sem-VEM, nine out of 51 eligible patients (17.6%) rejected resection. One hundred and ten patients were recommended in-VEM, 52 of those (47.2%) declined. Variables independently associated with rejection of in-VEM comprised intellectual disability (OR 4.721, 95% CI 1.047-21.284), extratemporal focal aware non-motor seizures ("aura") vs. no "aura" (OR 0.338, 95% CI 0.124-0.923), and unilateral or bilateral vs. no MRI lesion (OR 0.248, 95% CI 0.100-0.614 and 0.149, 95% CI 0.027-0.829, respectively). Conclusions: During and after presurgical evaluation, patients with intractable focal epilepsy declined resections and intracranial EEGs, as recommended by their epileptologists, in almost 20% and 50% of cases. This calls for early and thorough counseling of patients on risks and benefits of epilepsy surgery. Future prospective studies should ask patients in depth for specific reasons why they decline their physicians' recommendations

These systems include barrier winds and katabatic flow that occur along its southeast coast. Global atmospheric reanalyses have proven to be important tools in furthering our understanding of these orographic winds and their role in the climate system. However, there is evidence that the mesoscale characteristics of these systems may be missed in these global products. Here we show that the Arctic System Reanalysis, a higher-resolution regional reanalysis, is able to capture mesoscale features of barrier winds and katabatic flow that are missed or underrepresented in ERA-I, a leading modern global reanalysis. This suggests that our understanding of the impact of these wind systems on the coupled-climate system can be enhanced through the use of higher-resolution regional reanalyses or model data.2015-10-1

    Coherent pion production in neutrino nucleus collision in the 1 GeV region

    We calculate cross sections for coherent pion production in nuclei induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos of the electron and muon type. The analogies and differences between this process and the related ones of coherent pion production induced by photons, or the (p,n) and (3He,t)(^3 He, t) reactions are discussed. The process is one of the several ones occurring for intermediate energy neutrinos, to be considered when detecting atmospheric neutrinos.     The impacts of climate change on sea temperature around the UK and Ireland

    What is already happening? • Sea surface temperature (SST) around the UK generally shows a significant warming trend of around 0.3C per decade over the last 40 years. • Regional variations exist in this trend with surface warming being greatest across the southern North Sea and least across the north-west of the domain. • Warm-season (Autumn) near-bottom temperatures have increased significantly across the southern North Sea over the last 30 years, but not across other regions of the domain. • Compared to 1982–1998, the annual number of marine heatwaves increased around the British Isles by an average of four events per year in the period 2000–2016. Larger increases of up to six additional events per year occurred to the north of the British Isles. Smaller changes occurred to the south of the region

    The damping mechanisms of the Delta(1232) resonance in nuclei are studied by analyzing the quasi-free decay reactions 12C(pi+,pi+ p)11B and 12C(3He,t pi+ p)11B and the 2p emission reactions 12C(pi+,pp)10B and 12C(3He,t pp)10B. The coincidence cross sections are calculated within the framework of the isobar-hole model. It is found that the 2p emission process induced by the decay of the Delta resonance in the nucleus can be consistently described by a pi+rho+g' model for the Delta+N -> N+N decay interaction.Comment: 9 pages, 5 Postscript figures, uses RevTex, psfig.sty.
