The Spectroscopic Orbit of the Planetary Companion Transiting HD209458
We report a spectroscopic orbit with period P = 3.52433 +/- 0.00027 days for
the planetary companion that transits the solar-type star HD209458. For the
metallicity, mass, and radius of the star we derive [Fe/H] = 0.00 +/- 0.02, M =
1.1 +/- 0.1 solar masses, and R = 1.3 +/- 0.1 solar radii. This is based on a
new analysis of the iron lines in our HIRES template spectrum, and also on the
absolute magnitude and color of the star, and uses isochrones from four
different sets of stellar evolution models. Using these values for the stellar
parameters we reanalyze the transit data and derive an orbital inclination of i
= 85.2 +/- 1.4 degrees. For the planet we derive a mass of Mp = 0.69 +/- 0.05
Jupiter masses, a radius of Rp = 1.54 +/- 0.18 Jupiter radii, and a density of

Deglaciation of Fennoscandia
To provide a new reconstruction of the deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, in the form of calendar-year time-slices, which are particularly useful for ice sheet modelling, we have compiled and synthesized published geomorphological data for eskers, ice-marginal formations, lineations, marginal meltwater channels, striae, ice-dammed lakes, and geochronological data from radiocarbon, varve, optically-stimulated luminescence, and cosmogenic nuclide dating. This 25 is summarized as a deglaciation map of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet with isochrons marking every 1000 years between 22 and 13 cal kyr BP and every hundred years between 11.6 and final ice decay after 9.7 cal kyr BP. Deglaciation patterns vary across the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet domain, reflecting differences in climatic and geomorphic settings as well as ice sheet basal thermal conditions and terrestrial versus marine margins. For example, the ice sheet margin in the high-precipitation coastal setting of the western sector responded sensitively to climatic variations leaving a detailed record of prominent moraines and ice-marginal deposits in many fjords and coastal valleys. Retreat rates across the southern sector differed between slow retreat of the terrestrial margin in western and southern Sweden and rapid retreat of the calving ice margin in the Baltic Basin. Our reconstruction is consistent with much of the published research. However, the synthesis of a large amount of existing and new data support refined reconstructions in some areas. For example, we locate the LGM extent of the ice sheet in northwestern Russia further east than previously suggested and conclude that it occurred at a later time than the rest of the ice sheet, at around 17-15 cal kyr BP, and propose a slightly different chronology of moraine formation over southern Sweden based on improved correlations of moraine segments using new LiDAR data and tying the timing of moraine formation to Greenland ice core cold stages. Retreat rates vary by as much as an order of magnitude in different sectors of the ice sheet, with the lowest rates on the high-elevation and maritime Norwegian margin. Retreat rates compared to the climatic information provided by the Greenland ice core record show a general correspondence between retreat rate and climatic forcing, although a close match between retreat rate and climate is unlikely because of other controls, such as topography and marine versus terrestrial margins. Well Logging Results from the Newark Rift Basin Coring Project
Wireline logs were acquired at seven sites in the Newark Rift basin using dipmeter, gamma ray, resistivity, velocity, porosity, density, magnetic susceptibility, temperature, and acoustic televiewer tools. The logs indicate that the formations are clay rich and dip on average 9°N-NW. Densities are relatively constant (2.60-2.80 glee) and compressional velocities vary from 4.2-5.5 km/s. Thin uranium-rich layers and basalt flows are clearly delineated. The boreholes are mostly in-gauge, but deviated, and borehole temperature gradients vary between 15 to 26°C/km. These data are potentially useful as indicators of fluid flow and regional stress, lithologic cycles, and for core orientation in the Newark Rift basin

Informatics and data mining tools and strategies for the Human Connectome Project
The Human Connectome Project (HCP) is a major endeavor that will acquire and analyze connectivity data plus other neuroimaging, behavioral, and genetic data from 1,200 healthy adults. It will serve as a key resource for the neuroscience research community, enabling discoveries of how the brain is wired and how it functions in different individuals. To fulfill its potential, the HCP consortium is developing an informatics platform that will handle: 1) storage of primary and processed data, 2) systematic processing and analysis of the data, 3) open access data sharing, and 4) mining and exploration of the data. This informatics platform will include two primary components. ConnectomeDB will provide database services for storing and distributing the data, as well as data analysis pipelines. Connectome Workbench will provide visualization and exploration capabilities. The platform will be based on standard data formats and provide an open set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that will facilitate broad utilization of the data and integration of HCP services into a variety of external applications. Primary and processed data generated by the HCP will be openly shared with the scientific community, and the informatics platform will be available under an open source license. High-Resolution Spectroscopy of Some Very Active Southern Stars
We have obtained high-resolution echelle spectra of 18 solar-type stars that
an earlier survey showed to have very high levels of Ca II H and K emission.
Most of these stars belong to close binary systems, but 5 remain as probable
single stars or well-separated binaries that are younger than the Pleiades on
the basis of their lithium abundances and H-alpha emission. Three of these
probable single stars also lie more than 1 magnitude above the main sequence in
a color-magnitude diagram, and appear to have ages of 10 to 15 Myr. Two of
them, HD 202917 and HD 222259, also appear to have a kinematical association
with the pre-main sequence multiple system HD 98800.Comment: 25 figures, 3 table
Archaeology and Language: The Indo-Iranians
This review of recent archaeological work in Central Asia and Eurasia attempts to trace and date the movements of the IndoIraniansspeakers of languages of the eastern branch of ProtoIndoEuropean that later split into the Iranian and Vedic families. Russian and Central Asian scholars working on the contemporary but very different Andronovo and Bactrian Margiana archaeological complexes of the 2d millennium b.c. have identified both as IndoIranian, and particular sites so identified are being used for nationalist purposes. There is, however, no compelling archaeological evidence that they had a common ancestor or that either is IndoIranian. Ethnicity and language are not easily linked with an archaeological signature, and the identity of the IndoIranians remains elusive
