    Estudio de cúmulos estelares de la Nube Menor de Magallanes: fotometría de Washington de 14 cúmulos de edad intermedia

    We present CCD photometry in the Washington system C and T1 bands of 14 star clusters of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We determine ages and metallicities using theoretical isochrones, the δT1 parameter and the Red Giant Standard method. Excepting IC 1708, all the observed clusters are aged between 1 and 6.3 Gyr, while their metallicities ([Fe/H]) range between -0.7 and -1.4. Two important cluster formation episodes in the SMC, dated at ∼ 2 Gyr and ∼ 5 Gyr ago, were detected. During approximately the first 4 Gyr in the SMC lifetime, the cluster formation rate turned out to be constant. A detailed version of this work can be seen in Piatti et al. Constatamos dos importantes episodios de formación de cúmulos en la NmM ocurridos hace ∼ 2 mil y ∼ 5 mil millones de años.     Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

    In Europe, emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in groundwater is a growing research area. Prioritisation for monitoring EOCs was formalised in 2019 in Europe through the development of the first voluntary groundwater watch list (GWWL). Despite this, groundwater occurrence data in the peer reviewed literature for Europe has not been reviewed to date. Questions surrounding the effect, toxicity, movement in the subsurface and unsaturated zone make the process of regulating EOC use difficult. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification, and prioritisation of EOCs to be monitored in groundwater. This paper compiles evidence from the recent published studies from across Europe, since 2012 when the last major literature global review of EOCs in groundwater took place. A total of 39 studies were identified for review based on specific selection criteria (geography, publication date, sample size>10, inclusion of EOCs data). Data on specific compounds, and associated meta-data are compiled and reviewed. The two most frequently detected EOCs, carbamazepine and caffeine, occurred in groundwater at concentrations of up to 2.3 and 14.8 μg/L, respectively

    In MMTV-Her-2/neu transgenic mammary tumors the absence of caveolin-1−/− alters PTEN and NHERF1 but not β-catenin expression

    In a recent study, we have shown that in mammary tumors from mice lacking the Cav-1 gene, there are alterations in specific heat shock proteins as well as in tumor development. With this in mind, we have now investigated other proteins in the same mammary mouse tumor model (Her-2/neu expressing mammary tumors from Cav-1 wild type and Cav-1 null mice), to further comprehend the complex tumor-stroma mechanisms involved in regulating stress responses during tumor development. In this tumor model the cancer cells always lacked of Cav-1, so the KO influenced the Cav-1 in the stroma. By immunohistochemistry, we have found a striking co-expression of β-catenin and Her-2/neu in the tumor cells. The absence of Cav-1 in the tumor stroma had no effect on expression or localization of β-catenin and Her-2/neu. Both proteins appeared co-localized at the cell surface during tumor development and progression. Since Her-2/neu activation induces MTA1, we next evaluated MTA1 in the mouse tumors. Although this protein was found in numerous nuclei, the absence of Cav-1 did not alter its expression level. In contrast, significantly more PTEN protein was noted in the tumors lacking Cav-1 in the stroma, with the protein localized mainly in the nuclei. P-Akt levels were relatively low in tumors from both Cav-1 WT and Cav-1 KO mice. There was also an increase in nuclear NHERF1 expression levels in the tumors arising from Cav-1 KO mice. The data obtained in the MMTV-neu model are consistent with a role for Cav-1 in adjacent breast cancer stromal cells in modulating the expression and localization of important proteins implicated in tumor cell behavior.Fil: Cuello Carrión, Fernando Darío.     The liver stem cell niche is a specialized and dynamic microenvironment with biomechanical and biochemical characteristics that regulate stem cell behavior. This is feasible due to the coordination of a complex network of secreted factors, small molecules, neural, blood inputs and extracellular matrix (ECM) components involved in the regulation of stem cell fate (self-renewal, survival, and differentiation into more mature phenotypes like hepatocytes and cholangiocytes). In this review, we describe and summarize all the major components that play essential roles in the liver stem cell niche, in particular, growth factor signaling and the biomechanical properties of the ECM

    Supernucleation Dominates Lignin/Poly(ethylene oxide) Crystallization Kinetics

    The effect of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) on the crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is examined. Lignin from spruce and ionic isolation was used to prepare LNPs with a number-averaged diameter of 85 nm (with a relatively large polydispersity) by an ultrasonication method. PEO-based nanocomposites with four different LNP contents (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt %) were prepared and subject to isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization protocols in a series of experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed well-dispersed LNPs in the crystallized PEO matrix. The incorporation of LNPs exponentially increases nucleation density at moderate loadings, with this trend apparently saturating at higher loadings. However, the spherulitic growth rate decreases monotonically with LNP loading. This is attributed to the substantial PEO/LNP affinity, which impacts chain diffusion and induces supernucleation effect (with efficiencies in the order of 200%), but leads to slower growth rates. The overall crystallization kinetics, measured by the DSC, shows faster nanocomposite crystallization rates relative to the neat PEO at all LNP contents examined. This indicates that the supernucleation effect of LNPs dominates over the decrease in the growth rates, although its influence slightly decreases as the LNP content increases. The strong hydrogen-bonded interactions between the LNPs and the PEO are thus reminiscent of confinement effects found in polymer-grafted NP nanocomposites (e.g., PEO-g-SiO2/PEO) in the brush-controlled regime.This work received funding from the Basque Government through grant IT1503 - 22.     Immigrant community integration in world cities

    As a consequence of the accelerated globalization process, today major cities all over the world are characterized by an increasing multiculturalism. The integration of immigrant communities may be affected by social polarization and spatial segregation. How are these dynamics evolving over time? To what extent the different policies launched to tackle these problems are working? These are critical questions traditionally addressed by studies based on surveys and census data. Such sources are safe to avoid spurious biases, but the data collection becomes an intensive and rather expensive work. Here, we conduct a comprehensive study on immigrant integration in 53 world cities by introducing an innovative approach: an analysis of the spatio-temporal communication patterns of immigrant and local communities based on language detection in Twitter and on novel metrics of spatial integration. We quantify the "Power of Integration" of cities --their capacity to spatially integrate diverse cultures-- and characterize the relations between different cultures when acting as hosts or immigrants.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures + Appendi

    Potential conservation of circadian clock proteins in the phylum Nematoda as revealed by bioinformatic searches

    Although several circadian rhythms have been described in C. elegans, its molecular clock remains elusive. In this work we employed a novel bioinformatic approach, applying probabilistic methodologies, to search for circadian clock proteins of several of the best studied circadian model organisms of different taxa (Mus musculus, Drosophila melanogaster, Neurospora crassa, Arabidopsis thaliana and Synechoccocus elongatus) in the proteomes of C. elegans and other members of the phylum Nematoda. With this approach we found that the Nematoda contain proteins most related to the core and accessory proteins of the insect and mammalian clocks, which provide new insights into the nematode clock and the evolution of the circadian system.Fil: Romanowski, Andrés.     Polymorphisms in host immunity modulating genes and risk of invasive aspergillosis: results from the aspBIOmics consortium

    Recent studies suggest that immune-modulating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influence the risk of developing cancer-related infections. Here, we evaluated whether 36 SNPs within 14 immune-related genes are associated with the risk of Invasive Aspergillosis (IA) and whether genotyping of these variants might improve disease risk prediction. We conducted a case-control association study of 781 immunocompromised patients, 149 of whom were diagnosed with IA. Association analysis showed that the IL4Rrs2107356 and IL8rs2227307 SNPs were associated with an increased risk of IA (OR=1.92, 95%CI: 1.20-3.09 and OR=1.73, 1.06-2.81) whereas the IL12Brs3212227 and IFN?rs2069705 variants were significantly associated with a decreased risk of developing the infection (OR=0.60, 0.38-0.96 and OR=0.63, 0.41-0.97). An allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT)-stratified analysis revealed that the effect observed for the IL4Rrs2107356 and IFN?rs2069705 SNPs was stronger in allo-HSCT (OR=5.63, 1.20-3.09 and OR=0.24, 0.10-0.59) than in non-HSCT patients, suggesting that the presence of these SNPs may render patients more vulnerable to infection especially under severe and prolonged immunosuppressive conditions. Importantly, in vitro studies revealed that carriers of the IFN?rs2069705C allele showed a significantly increased macrophage-mediated neutralisation of fungal conidia (P=0.0003) and, under stimulation conditions, produced higher levels of IFN? mRNA (P=0.049) and IFN? and TNFa cytokines (PLPS-96h=0.057, PPHA-96h=0.036 and PLPS+PHA-96h=0.030 and PPHA -72h=0.045, PLPS+PHA-72h=0.018, PLPS-96h=0.058 and PLPS+PHA -96h=0.0058, respectively). Finally, we also observed that the addition of SNPs significantly associated with IA to a model including clinical variables led to a substantial improvement in the discriminatory ability to predict the disease (AUC=0.659 vs. AUC=0.564, PLR=5.2•10-4 and P50.000Perm=9.34•10-5).
