The present study aimed to understand how middle school students report how they self-regulate
learning when using the Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle)
platform. To achieve this goal, a sample of middle school students (N=438) responded to the SelfRegulated Learning with Moodle Inventory (SRL-MI). Exploratory factor analysis (219 participants)
and confirmatory factor analysis (219 participants) revealed good fit indices for the instrument
used. In general, the results showed that students reflected on and reported how they selfregulated their learning when using the Moodle platform. Results also demonstrated how middle
school students thought of themselves as learners. Through Item Response Theory, results
showed that the students overestimated the way in which they self-regulated their learning in
different phases (forethought: α = 0.93, performance: α = 0.88, and self-reflection: α = 0.92). This
reveals the difficulty students of this age group have and the inaccuracy with which they report how
they self-regulate their learning when using the Moodle platform. Specifically, students revealed
some difficulty in reporting strategic planning processes, the processes of regulating attention, and
their self-reaction processes. Students demonstrated less difficulty in reporting self-efficacy beliefs
about what they were able to learn, monitoring strategies and the reasons for success. Implications
for guidance practice regarding the promotion of students’ self-reflection and suggestions for future
research are discussed.
dinámico orientado a objetos modulares (Moodle).
Histopathological features of organs in a rat model of mamamry carcinogenesis: a reference database
Mammary tumors’ development was induced through the intraperioneal administration of the carcinogen N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU). Animals from group control were injected with the vehicle (saline solution). Animals were sacrificed at 25 weeks-old and the organs were histopathologically evaluated. A higher number of lesions was observed in the organs of animals from group MNU. The animals from group control did not present any lesion in lymph nodes. Independently of the experimental group, the internal organs presented hemodynamic alterations, degenerative and inflammatory changes. Hemodynamic changes may be consequence of euthanasia method. As expected, the higher number and the higher grade of the lesions in group MNU were due to the carcinogen administration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Effectiveness of a combined surf and psychological preventive intervention with children and adolescents in residential childcare: A randomized controlled trial
Children and adolescents living in residential childcare have a higher prevalence of mental health problems as a result of a history of adverse childhood experiences.
Therefore, this population should be a priority target for mental health preventive interventions. The current study analyses the effectiveness of the Wave by Wave
surf therapy program, that combines surfing with a psychological group intervention, through a randomized controlled trial. Seventy-three youth (7-17 years) living
in residential care participated in the study. Main mental health outcomes (adjustment problems, depression, anxiety, and wellbeing) and secondary outcomes
(self-efficacy, self-regulation, sleep quality, physical activity, pro-social behavior, and social connectivity) were assessed at pre- and post-intervention. The results
indicated a significant impact of the intervention on mental health outcomes reported by the key residential worker, with medium to large effect sizes. Specifically,
after the intervention, there was a significant reduction in the total emotional and behavioural problems, and a significant increase of youth pro-social behaviour and
quality of life that was not observed for the waiting list group. There were no significant effects on other measures reported by the children (e.g., depression and
anxiety, self-esteem, emotion regulation, social connectedness, sleep quality, physical activity) and on executive functions measures. The Wave by Wave program
seems to be an effective intervention to reduce behavior problems and to promote pro-social behavior in a high-risk sample. The absence of significant effects on
other dimensions may indicate the need of some complementary support to address specific difficulties of this population.
Validation of the rat model of prostate cancer: correlating seminal vesicle lesions with dorsolateral prostate lesions
Background/aim: Lesions in the seminal vesicle are described in the most used protocols for prostate cancer (PCa) induction. This study aimed to characterize the lesions of seminal vesicles associated with a protocol of PCa induction in rats to contribute to better characterization of this model.
Materials and methods: Forty-five male Wistar Unilever rats were randomly divided into two control groups: CONT1 (n=10) and CONT2 (n=10); and two PCa-induced groups: IND1 (n=10) and IND2 (n=15), sacrificed at 35 and 61 weeks, respectively. Animals from the induced groups were exposed to a multistep protocol for PCa induction. Animals, seminal vesicles and dorsolateral prostate were weighed. Seminal vesicles and dorsolateral prostate were submitted to histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis.
Results: Animals in which PCa was induced had a lower mean body weight when compared with the control animals (p<0.05). The relative mean seminal vesicle weight was higher in groups with PCa when compared with control groups (p<0.05). Although the differences were not statistically significant, animals from the IND2 group developed more lesions than animals from the IND1 and CONT2 groups. It is worth noting that the animals from group IND2 developed papillary adenomas and carcinomas in situ, which were not observed in any other group. Similar to observations in seminal vesicles, animals from group IND2 developed more dorsolateral prostate lesions than animals from the IND1 group (p<0.05).
Conclusion: We observed that the longer the exposure to testosterone was, the greater was the incidence of preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in both the seminal vesicle and the prostate, suggesting that testosterone exposure affects the spectrum of developed lesions
Anatomy and imaging of rat prostate: practical monitoring in experimental cancer-induced protocols
The rat has been frequently used as a model to study several human diseases, including cancer. In many research protocols using cancer models, researchers find it difficult to perform several of the most commonly used techniques and to compare their results. Although the protocols for the study of carcinogenesis are based on the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of organs, few studies focus on the use of imaging. The use of imaging modalities to monitor the development of cancer avoids the need for intermediate sacrifice to assess the status of induced lesions, thus reducing the number of animals used in experiments. Our work intends to provide a complete and systematic overview of rat prostate anatomy and imaging, facilitating the monitoring of prostate cancer development through different imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).publishe

Oxidative stress involving changes in Nrf2 and ER stress in early stages of Alzheimer's disease
AbstractOxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress have been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. In this study we analyzed whether oxidative stress involving changes in Nrf2 and ER stress may constitute early events in AD pathogenesis by using human peripheral blood cells and an AD transgenic mouse model at different disease stages. Increased oxidative stress and increased phosphorylated Nrf2 (p(Ser40)Nrf2) were observed in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Moreover, we observed impaired ER Ca2+ homeostasis and increased ER stress markers in PBMCs from MCI individuals and mild AD patients. Evidence of early oxidative stress defense mechanisms in AD was substantiated by increased p(Ser40)Nrf2 in 3month-old 3xTg-AD male mice PBMCs, and also with increased nuclear Nrf2 levels in brain cortex. However, SOD1 protein levels were decreased in human MCI PBMCs and in 3xTg-AD mice brain cortex; the latter further correlated with reduced SOD1 mRNA levels. Increased ER stress was also detected in the brain cortex of young female and old male 3xTg-AD mice. We demonstrate oxidative stress and early Nrf2 activation in AD human and mouse models, which fails to regulate some of its targets, leading to repressed expression of antioxidant defenses (e.g., SOD-1), and extending to ER stress. Results suggest markers of prodromal AD linked to oxidative stress associated with Nrf2 activation and ER stress that may be followed in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells
Uloga prirodnih spojeva kod raka mliječnih žlijezda u štakora; blagotvorni učinci vodenog ekstrakta Santolina chamaecyparissus L.
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women, and a leading cause of death worldwide. Santolina chamaecyparissus L. is a plant with multiple health benefits, including anticancer and anti-diabetic properties. This study aimed to assess the chemopreventive effects of S. chamaecyparissus aqueous extract (SCE) in an animal model of mammary cancer. A total of 28 four-week-old female Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, MNU-induced (IND), SCE-supplemented (SCE), and SCE+IND. SCE was added to drinking water (12.72 mg/kg body weight) ad libitum. MNU was administered via the intraperitoneal route at 50 days of age. Weekly monitoring of body weight, food/drink intake, humane endpoints, and number of mammary tumours were recorded. Twenty weeks after MNU administration, animals were sacrificed by anaesthetic overdose and a necropsy was performed. Blood samples were used to determine blood count and serum biochemistry analysis, while kidney and liver samples were analysed for oxidative stress. Tumour samples were collected for gene expression and histology studies. SCE chemical composition was analysed by LC-MS and contained 19 phenolic compounds, with the most abundant being myricetin-O-glucuronide and 1,3-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid. Two animals in the IND group were sacrificed due to exceeding the humane endpoint limits. SCE supplementation delayed mammary tumour development, reducing its volume and weight. SCE had a positive impact on haematological parameters, particularly the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (P=0.026). No significant differences were observed in serum biochemistry, except for creatinine kinase MB, or in oxidative stress markers. Gene expression analysis showed significantly reduced VEGF expression levels (P=0.0158) in tumours from SCE+IND. These findings suggest that SCE is deserving of further study to identify the individual compounds and to understand its influence on animal models during cancer development. Dvadeset i osam četiri ženki starih tjedna wistar štakora podijeljeno je u četiri skupine: kontrolnu, MNU-inducirano (IND), s dodatkom SCE (SCE) i SCE+IND.
Effects of testosterone and exercise training on bone microstructure of rats
[EN] Background and Aim: Male hypogonadism results from failure to produce physiological levels of testosterone. Testosterone in men is essential in masculine development, sperm production, and adult man’s health. Osteoporosis is one of the consequences of hypogonadism. Regular physical exercise and exogenous testosterone administration are frequently used to prevent or treat this condition. This study aimed to understand the effects of lifelong exercise training and testosterone levels (isolated and together) in the main bone structure parameters. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 rats were used and randomly divided into four groups: Control group (CG; n=6), exercised group (EG, n=6), testosterone group (TG, n=6), and testosterone EG (TEG, n=6). A micro-computed tomography equipment was used to evaluate 15 bone parameters. Results: Both factors (exercise training and testosterone) seem to improve the bone resistance and microstructure, although in different bone characteristics. Testosterone influenced trabecular structure parameters, namely, connectivity density, trabecular number, and trabecular space. The exercise promoted alterations in bone structure as well, although, in most cases, in different bone structure parameters as bone mineral density and medullar mineral density. Conclusion: Overall, exercise and testosterone therapy seems to have a synergistic contribution to the general bone structure and resistance. Further studies are warranted, comparing different individual factors, as gender, lifestyle, or testosterone protocols, to constantly improve the medical management of hypogonadism (and osteoporosis)SIWe thank to Eva Pascual de la Calle y Vanessa Loredo López, from Unidad de Imagen PreclínicaBioterio, Universidad de Oviedo.
