The objective of this article was to analyze the managerial styles in coffee farmers of two regions in Minas Gerais State, Brazil (Sul and Zona da Mata), and the difficulties which can be compromising the administrative effectiveness. Primary data were collected from forms applied to 56 coffee farmers, in the harvest period 2003/2004. To analyze the relation between the dominant managerial styles and the reached economic and technical performances in the activity, the analysis of simple correlation was used (coefficient of Pearson). Regressions were estimated to indicate as the situational variables had intervened in the styles. Among the main results it is important to point out that the producers, in general, presented as dominant managerial style 9,9, which represents the versatile and intent manager to the changes of the environment. The situational variables intervened, significantly, in the managerial styles in both regions, of differentiated form. Also positive correlations between the dominant managerial styles were observed and the physical production and total gross income in the production of coffee in the Zone of Mata region. This can be an indication that the versatile style is related to a good economic and technical performance in the activity. The results of this research can be considered reference to reach managerial effectiveness in the production of coffee in the studied regions.Managerial styles, Managerial effectiveness, Managerial grid, Coffee production, Crop Production/Industries,

Two new compounds of the general formula: (Ph4P)2[Zn(RSO2N@CS2)2], where R?C6H5 (1) and 4-CH3C6H4 (2) were obtained in crystalline form by the reaction of the appropriate potassium N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate (RSO2N@CS2K2) with zinc(II) acetate dihydrate in dimethylformamide. The compounds crystallise in the centrosymmetric space group of the triclinic system with Z ? 2. The single crystal X-ray analysis showed a similarly distorted tetrahedral configuration around the zinc(II) cation due to the bidentate chelation by two sulfur atoms of the N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate ligands. Ionic interaction between oppositely charged moieties, i.e., the bis(N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimato)zincate(II) dianion [Zn(RSO2N@CS2)2]2_ and tetraphenylphosphonium cation Ph4P? and van der Waals interactions determine the crystal packing motif. The IR data are consistent with the formation of zinc?dithiocarbimate complexes. The 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra showed the expected signals for the tetraphenylphosphonium cation and the dithiocarbimate moieties

The favorable outcome of the treatment of a disease is influenced by the adherence to therapy. Our objective was to assess factors associated with adherence to treatment of patients included in a clinical trial of equivalence between the standard and alternative treatment schemes with meglumine antimoniate (MA) in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Between 2008 and 2011, 57 patients with CL were interviewed using a questionnaire to collect socioeconomic data. The following methods were used for adherence monitoring: counting of vial surplus, monitoring card, Morisky test and modified Morisky test (without the question regarding the schedule); we observed 82.1% (vial return), 86.0% (monitoring card), 66.7% (Morisky test) and 86.0% (modified Morisky test) adherence. There was a strong correlation between the method of vial counting and the monitoring card and modified Morisky test. A significant association was observed between greater adherence to treatment and low dose of MA, as well as with a lower number of people sleeping in the same room. We recommend the use of the modified Morisky test to assess adherence to treatment of CL with MA, because it is a simple method and with a good performance, when compared to other methods

Intragenic antimicrobial peptides (IAPs) from human proteins with potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity

Following the treads of our previous works on the unveiling of bioactive peptides encrypted in plant proteins from diverse species, the present manuscript reports the occurrence of four proof-of-concept intragenic antimicrobial peptides in human proteins, named Hs IAPs. These IAPs were prospected using the software Kamal, synthesized by solid phase chemistry, and had their interactions with model phospholipid vesicles investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and circular dichroism. Their antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi was determined, along with their cytotoxicity towards erythrocytes. Our data demonstrates that Hs IAPs are capable to bind model membranes while attaining α-helical structure, and to inhibit the growth of microorganisms at concentrations as low as 1μM. Hs02, a novel sixteen residue long internal peptide (KWAVRIIRKFIKGFISNH2) derived from the unconventional myosin 1h protein, was further investigated in its capacity to inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced release of TNF-α in murine macrophages. Hs02 presented potent anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting the release of TNF-α in LPSprimed cells at the lowest assayed concentration, 0.1 μM. A three-dimensional solution structure of Hs02 bound to DPC micelles was determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Our work exemplifies how the human genome can be mined for molecules with biotechnological potential in human health and demonstrates that IAPs are actual alternatives to antimicrobial peptides as pharmaceutical agents or in their many other putative applications

First-year experience of a Brazilian tertiary medical center in supporting severely ill patients using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this manuscript is to describe the first year of our experience using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. METHODS: Ten patients with severe refractory hypoxemia, two with associated severe cardiovascular failure, were supported using venous-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (eight patients) or veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (two patients). RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 31 yr (range 14-71 yr). Their median simplified acute physiological score three (SAPS3) was 94 (range 84-118), and they had a median expected mortality of 95% (range 87-99%). Community-acquired pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (50%), followed by P. jiroveci pneumonia in two patients with AIDS (20%). Six patients were transferred from other ICUs during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, three of whom were transferred between ICUs within the hospital (30%), two by ambulance (20%) and one by helicopter (10%). Only one patient (10%) was anticoagulated with heparin throughout extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. Eighty percent of patients required continuous venous-venous hemofiltration. Three patients (30%) developed persistent hypoxemia, which was corrected using higher positive end-expiratory pressure, higher inspired oxygen fractions, recruitment maneuvers, and nitric oxide. The median time on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support was five (range 3-32) days. The median length of the hospital stay was 31 (range 3-97) days. Four patients (40%) survived to 60 days, and they were free from renal replacement therapy and oxygen support. CONCLUSIONS: The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support in severely ill patients is possible in the presence of a structured team. Efforts must be made to recognize the necessity of extracorporeal respiratory support at an early stage and to prompt activation of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation team

Tannins, Peptic Ulcers and Related Mechanisms

This review of the current literature aims to study correlations between the chemical structure and gastric anti-ulcer activity of tannins. Tannins are used in medicine primarily because of their astringent properties. These properties are due to the fact that tannins react with the tissue proteins with which they come into contact. In gastric ulcers, this tannin-protein complex layer protects the stomach by promoting greater resistance to chemical and mechanical injury or irritation. Moreover, in several experimental models of gastric ulcer, tannins have been shown to present antioxidant activity, promote tissue repair, exhibit anti Helicobacter pylori effects, and they are involved in gastrointestinal tract anti-inflammatory processes. The presence of tannins explains the anti-ulcer effects of many natural products
