Estimates of carbon sequestration coefficients for forestry grown on Norwegian agricultural land
This working paper documents the derivation of carbon sequestration coefficients for forest grown on Norwegian agricultural land. These figures will serve as input to the established model Jordmod – an economic model of the Norwegian agricultural sector. The purpose is to carry out greenhouse gas policy analysis. Associated with this paper is a GAMS program (The General Algebraic Modeling System), which computes the figures. The structure of this working paper is made to facilitate reading the program (given in Appendix A).
The main issue is the expected woody biomass production on agricultural land. While there is plenty of data and information about wood productivity of forest land, agricultural land is not classified in terms of its abilities to produce woodwork. So our main point of departure is to look at forest land statistics, and from that, construct coefficients to be applied on the agricultural land
Ionic and electronic conductivity in the LaNbO4 - LaTaO4 system
Defect chemical investigations on the LaNbO4-LaTaO4 system are, except for investigations on the parent phases, LaNbO4 and LaTaO4, non-existent. Research on this system is required to understand the impact of tantalum-doping on the conductivity of LaNbO4. If Ta-doping is found to increase the conductivity of LaNbO4, it could, in turn, open interesting, new avenues relating to doping and solid solubility in solid oxide fuel cell materials research.
In the work presented in this thesis, defect situations and conductivities for Ta-doped LaNbO4 were investigated as a function of Ta-content. Electrical characterization of several samples, containing concentrations of between 38 and 48 atomic-percent Tantalum, were carried through. Measurements were done in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres in a temperature range from 500°C to 1200°C.
The phase transition between low-temperature monoclinic and high-temperature tetragonal LaNbO4 was seen to increase, with increasing tantalum content, to a limit of ~850°C with 48 atomic-percent Ta. This was also shown to be the highest Ta-doping attainable under present experimental conditions.
Results showed that the defect model of pure LaNbO4 fit that of Ta-doped LaNbO4 rather well, with only a few alterations: Under wet, reducing conditions, proton conductivity dominated at any temperature. Under oxidizing conditions the low-temperature phase displayed decent proton conductivity. This changed over to oxygen ionic conductivity and later p-type electronic conductivity as temperature increased and the high-temperature phase was reached. It is possible that an observed increase in conductivity under reducing conditions, compared to oxidizing conditions, was due to a reduction of the samples.
It was seen that none of the Ta-containing LaNbO4-samples had conductivities exceeding that of its parent pure Ca-doped LaNbO4-phase. The highest proton conductivity measured was 4.5•10-4 S•cm-1 for 48 atomic-percent Ta-doped LaNbO4 at 1100°C.
XRD measurements on the sample containing 48 atomic-percent Ta showed three new phases in addition to LaNbO4; La0.33TaO3 (tetragonal), La(Ta3O9) (orthorhombic) and LaTaO4. The new phases did not appear to impact conductivity much, if anything
Bovine milk in human nutrition – a review
Milk and milk products are nutritious food items containing numerous essential nutrients, but in the western societies the consumption of milk has decreased partly due to claimed negative health effects. The content of oleic acid, conjugated linoleic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, short- and medium chain fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds may promote positive health effects. Full-fat milk has been shown to increase the mean gastric emptying time compared to half-skimmed milk, thereby increasing the gastrointestinal transit time. Also the low pH in fermented milk may delay the gastric emptying. Hence, it may be suggested that ingesting full-fat milk or fermented milk might be favourable for glycaemic (and appetite?) regulation. For some persons milk proteins, fat and milk sugar may be of health concern. The interaction between carbohydrates (both natural milk sugar and added sugar) and protein in milk exposed to heat may give products, whose effects on health should be further studied, and the increasing use of sweetened milk products should be questioned. The concentration in milk of several nutrients can be manipulated through feeding regimes. There is no evidence that moderate intake of milk fat gives increased risk of diseases
Extending sustainability from food to fashion consumption:the lived experience of working mothers
This report isa collection of the memos written in work package 1 of the LambdaRoad project, where the overall project objectives is to study the need and requirements for electronic communication (ecom) in the future transport system in Norway and develop a planning tool for ecom for the transport sector. lntroductory studies were performed in work package 1 and documented in this report. In particular we 1) have established va lue networks for ecom in Norway, 2) described the crucial terms in C-ITS ecom, including motivation for the planning tool, 3) established a comprehensive state of the art study for path loss models, a crucial part of the planning tool to be developed, 4) studied the literature to summarize the ecom requirements in the future transport system, and 5) conducted in-depth semi -structured interviews to reveal the requirements and needs of the planning tool in LambdaRoad for the project partners. Please note that some of the memos included might change during the rest of the project period, and that updates may occur
