Théophile Panadis (1889-1966), un guide abénaquis

No full text
Among the people of Odanak, ThĂ©ophile Panadis was known as “The Storyteller”. People used to say, “Ce que ThĂ©o raconte n’est pas des mensonges mais, il aime broder autour des faits”. To anthropologists A. Irving Hallowell, who worked at Odanak in the 1920s, and Gordon M. Day, who worked at Odanak in the 1950s and ‘60s, Panadis was a valued informant. He was also a husband and a father, an artist and an active member of his community who wanted people to remember the old ways. For much of his life he earned a living by guiding non-Native sportsman on hunting and fishing expeditions, using skills he had learned from his father and older relatives. This article will explore the life and lore of ThĂ©ophile Panadis, drawing on interviews with people from Odanak as well as archival sources. In the process one can see that Panadis left behind a detailed documentary trail of Abenaki language, history, culture and worldview for anyone who wants to follow him

The Association Between Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Allostatic Load in Older Adults

No full text
Allostatic load (AL) is a multisystemic index of biological wear and tear which is associated with poor health outcomes. In recent years, researchers have examined the association between dietary pattern intake and AL; however, no studies to date have examined the relationship between AL and consumption of a Mediterranean diet. Blood and urine samples were collected from 201 community-dwelling older adults who completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). A Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) was calculated based on previous recommendations and a sex-based AL index was calculated using a count-based approach for 16 biomarkers associated with neuroendocrine, immune, cardiovascular, or metabolic function. It was hypothesized that a higher MDS would be associated with lower AL, and that this association would be particularly robust for the immune and metabolic subcomponents of the AL index. In support of the primary study hypotheses, generalized linear models revealed a significant inverse relationship between MDS and AL (ß = −0.03, P = 0.037). However, subcomponents of the AL model were not significantly associated with MDS. Exploratory sub-group analyses by sex suggested that the association between AL and MDS was more robust in male than in female participants. The current findings are interpreted with caution given the study design and sample characteristics. Nonetheless, these findings contribute to the literature supporting the Mediterranean diet as an important lifestyle behavior that may minimize AL, and therefore support healthy aging.</p

Abstract The infant mortality rate (IMR) is one of the most important indicators of the socio-economic well-being and public health conditions of a country. The US childhood immunization schedule specifies 26 vaccine doses for infants aged less than 1 year-the most in the world-yet 33 nations have lower IMRs. Using linear regression, the immunization schedules of these 34 nations were examined and a correlation coefficient of r Π0.70 (p < 0.0001) was found between IMRs and the number of vaccine doses routinely given to infants. Nations were also grouped into five different vaccine dose ranges: 12-14, 15-17, 18-20, 21-23, and 24-26. The mean IMRs of all nations within each group were then calculated. Linear regression analysis of unweighted mean IMRs showed a high statistically significant correlation between increasing number of vaccine doses and increasing infant mortality rates, with r Π0.992 (p Π0.0009). Using the Tukey-Kramer test, statistically significant differences in mean IMRs were found between nations giving 12-14 vaccine doses and those giving 21-23, and 24-26 doses. A closer inspection of correlations between vaccine doses, biochemical or synergistic toxicity, and IMRs is essential
