Changes in pools of organic matter and major elements in the soil following prescribed pastoral burning in the central Pyrenees

High-mountain soils are rich in partially decomposed organic matter, which is highly sensitive to mineralization and fire. Prescribed burning is performed in the Pyrenees to keep subalpine grasslands open for grazing. The compositions of the ash, litter and duff layers, and the particulate organic matter (POM) of the topsoil in the 0–1, 1–2, 2–3, and 3–5 cm depths were analyzed in relation to the nutrient availability after the prescribed burning of a stand encroached by erizón (Echinospartum horridum). The concentrations of C, N, P, and S and organic components (nonstructural, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin-type) were determined before the prescribed burn and 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after the prescribed burn. The fire consumed the aboveground biomass, the litter and part of the duff layer, and the most thermostable (i.e., lignin-type) components and the least volatile elements (P, S) were selectively preserved in the resulting ash. Prescribed burning caused significant losses of organic-C and N only in the 0–1 cm depth (–72% and –68%, respectively). The organic-C loss was mostly (82%) from the POM, whereas the N loss was from more similar proportions of the POM (57%) and the nonparticulate organic matter (NPOM) (43%). However, few changes were observed in the composition of the organic matter, which pointed to a largely uneven combustion that resulted in a substantial part of the organic matter remaining largely untouched by the fire. After 6 months, the duff layer was depleted in hemicellulose by 32% compared to immediately after the burn, and fragmentation of the POM into the NPOM was observed. During the second spring, N- and P-rich charred POM were incorporated into the top 1 cm, while C-rich charcoal particles underwent fragmentation and vertical transport into the deeper soil. The preburn ecosytem was limited by P, and likely also by S. The plant available N showed transient increases of 1.5–2.1 times the immediate postburn levels for nitrate-N at 12 months after burning, and of up to 10–20 times for ammonium-N at 18 months. In contrast, the concentrations of plant-available P and S gradually declined to 1.8–3.3 and 1.8–4.0 times, respectively, lower at 24 months after the burn. Results indicated that fire-induced increases in the nutrient availability can be short-lived in high-mountain habitats, but steadier and likely more persistent nutrient inputs can derive from the gradual breakdown of charred organic matter. © 2021 Elsevier B.V

This study investigated the relationship between the processes of moral reasoning (emotional and rational) and the way ethical conflicts were solved in relation to Information Technology (IT). To this end, a sample of 177 Systems Engineering students (83% men, 17% women) aged 17 to 26 years completed the 'Ethical IT Survey' and a questionnaire to measure moral reasoning. The results show differences in the scores obtained for the four categories of scenarios analyzed, placing the responses to the topics of Privacy and Property in the ethically questionable category and those of Precision and Accessibility within the unethical category. The dominant type of reasoning was emotional. Furthermore, more than half of the participants reported having engaged in unethical behavior regarding the categories of Property and Accessibility, suggesting a discrepancy between the cognitive appreciation of the ethical conflict and engaging in behaviors related to these issues. In conclusion, we suggest that the training of such students should emphasize the relevance of ethics regarding IT-related issues.

Gut-Brain Axis: Role of Microbiota in Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis

It has recently been discovered that the digestive tract is lined with about 100 million nerve cells; the digestive tract has been baptized, metaphorically speaking, as “the second brain,” which contains a multitude of neurotransmitters, viruses, and bacteria that help regulate our emotional state. This second brain, known as the enteric nervous system, is a unique anatomical unit that extends from the esophagus to the anus. Like the nervous system, it produces a whole series of psychoactive substances, such as serotonin, dopamine, and opioids for pain, and synthesizes benzodiazepines. In it, we find the microbiota: a set of microorganisms (viruses and bacteria). Together with the brain, the microbiota directly influences mood, character, or sleep. Knowledge about the possible relationship of the microbiota with frequent neurological diseases is still just beginning. Recently, possible changes in the microbiota have been linked to the onset of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Also, today, we know that there are differences between the microbiota of healthy people and people with multiple sclerosis and that these differences have also been related to the disease and its evolution

Introduction The intake of polyphenols has certain health benefits. This study will aim to assess the effect of adding a daily amount of chocolate high in cocoa content and polyphenols to the normal diet on blood pressure, vascular function, cognitive performance, quality of life and body composition in postmenopausal women. Methods and analysis Here we plan a randomised clinical trial with two parallel groups involving a total of 140 women between 50 and 64 years in the postmenopausal period, defined by amenorrhoea of at least 12 consecutive months. The main variable will be the change in blood pressure. Secondary variables will be changes in vascular function, quality of life, cognitive performance and body composition. The intervention group will be given chocolate containing 99% cocoa, with instructions to add 10 g daily to their normal diet for 6 months. The daily nutritional contribution of this amount of chocolate is 59 kcal and 65.4 mg of polyphenols. There will be no intervention in the control group. All variables will be measured at the baseline visit and 3 and 6 months after randomisation, except cognitive performance and quality of life, which will only be assessed at baseline and at 6 months. Recruitment is scheduled to begin on 1 June 2018, and the study will continue until 31 May 2019. Ethics and dissemination This study was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Health Area of Salamanca, Spain (‘CREC of Health Area of Salamanca’), in February 2018. A SPIRIT checklist is available for this protocol. The clinical trial has been registered at ClinicalTrials. gov provided by the US National Library of Medicine, number NCT03492983. The results will be disseminated through open access peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, broadcast media and a presentation to stakeholders.Gerencia Regional de Castilla y León (GRS 1583/B/1

Areas of natural occurrence of melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811(Hymenoptera: Apidae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil.

    Get PDF
The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species

Combined use of smartphone and smartband technology in the improvement of lifestyles in the adult population over 65 years: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial (EVIDENT-Age study)

    Get PDF
Background The increasing use of smartphones by older adults also increases their potential for improving different aspects of health in this population. Some studies have shown promising results in the improvement of cognitive performance through lifestyle modification. All this may have a broad impact on the quality of life and carrying out daily living activities. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of combining the use of smartphone and smartband technology for 3 months with brief counseling on life habits, as opposed to providing counseling only, in increasing physical activity and improving adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Secondary objectives are to assess the effect of the intervention on body composition, quality of life, independence in daily living activities and cognitive performance. Methods This study is a two-arm cluster-randomized trial that will be carried out in urban health centers in Spain. We will recruit 160 people aged between 65 and 80 without cardiovascular disease or cognitive impairment (score in the Mini-mental State Examination ≥24). On a visit to their center, intervention group participants will be instructed to use a smartphone application for a period of 3 months. This application integrates information on physical activity received from a fitness bracelet and self-reported information on the patient’s daily nutritional composition. The primary outcome will be the change in the number of steps measured by accelerometer. Secondary variables will be adherence to the Mediterranean diet, sitting time, body composition, quality of life, independence in daily living activities and cognitive performance. All variables will be measured at baseline and on the assessment visit after 3 months. A telephone follow-up will be carried out at 6 months to collect self-reported data regarding physical activity and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Discussion Preventive healthy aging programs should include health education with training in nutrition and lifestyles, while stressing the importance of and enhancing physical activity; the inclusion of new technologies can facilitate these goals. The EVIDENT-AGE study will incorporate a simple, accessible intervention with potential implementation in the care of older adults. This study was supported in part by grants funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Institute of Biomedical Research of Salamanca (IBSAL)-IBY17/00003, and the Spanish Research Network for Preventive Activities and Health Promotion in Primary Care (REDIAPP)-RD16/0007
