Impact of buyers support on farmer performance and investments in the Brazilian pork supply chain.
Abstract: This paper analyses how the technical and managerial support of buyers affects the performance and investment capacity of Brazilian pig farmers. The paper also analyses the influence of the farmers? investment capacity on their own performance and how that performance in turn influences the investment requirements demanded by buyers. We developed a structural equation model applied to a sample of 199 farmers including piglet farmers (n=91) and finishers (n=108) working under production contracts. The model includes two constructs that assess performance ? financial performance and production and quality performance. The results show that buyer support positively influences both performance constructs and investment requirements for piglet farmers and finishers. The relationship between buyer support and investment capacity was significant only in the sample of finishers. Farmers? investment capacity positively influences both performance constructs in the sample of piglet farmers. For finishers, investment capacity influences only financial performance. Moreover, only production and quality performance of finishers influences investment requirements. The results provide buyers and farmers with insights for refinements in support policies and management
Educating for self-interest or -transcendence? An empirical approach to investigating the role of moral competencies in opportunity recognition for sustainable development
Entrepreneurship education with a focus on sustainable development primarily
teaches students to develop a profitâdriven mentality. As sustainable development is
a valueâoriented and normative concept, the role of individual ethical norms and valâ
ues in entrepreneurial processes has been receiving increased attention. Therefore,
this study addresses the role of moral competence in the process of idea generation
for sustainable development. A mixed method design was developed in which wouldâ
be entrepreneurs were subjected to a questionnaire (n = 398) and to realâlife deciâ
sionâmaking processes in a case assignment (n = 96). The results provide stepping
stones for implementing (moral) competencies in entrepreneurship education as a
possible avenue to move away from a sole focus on a profitâdriven mentalit
Exploring the integration of business and CSR perspectives in smallholder sourcing: black soybean in Indonesia and tomato in India
Purpose â The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of smallholder supply chains on sustainable
sourcing to answer the question how food and agribusiness multinationals can best include smallholders in
their sourcing strategies and take social responsibility for large-scale sustainable and more equitable supply.
A sustainable smallholder sourcing model with a list of critical success factors (CSFs) has been applied on two
best-practise cases. In this model, business and corporate social responsibility perspectives are integrated.
Design/methodology/approach â The primary data of the value chain analyses of the two smallholder
supply chains of a food and agribusiness multinational have been applied. Both cases were of a join research
program commissioned by the multinational and a non-governmental organization using the same methods
and research tools. Similarities, differences and interference between the cases have been determined and
assessed in order to confirm, fine tune or adjust the CSFs.
Findings â Both cases could be conceptualized through the smallholder sourcing model. Most CSFs could be
found in both cases, but differences were also found, which led to fine tuning of some CSFs: building of a
partnership and effective producers organization, providing farm financing and the use of cross-functional
teams in smallholder supplier development programs. It was also concluded that the smallholder sourcing
model is applicable in different geographical areas.
Research limitations/implications â The findings of this study are based on just two cases. More
best-practise cases are recommended in order to confirm or to adjust the developed sourcing model and the CSFs.
Originality/value â This paper/research fills the need in sustainable supply chain management literature to
study supply chains that comply with the triple bottom line concept, rather than supply chains that are just
more âgreen.â

Exploring the relation between individual moral antecedents and entrepreneurial opportunity recognition for sustainable development
When dealing with complex value-driven problems such as sustainable development, individuals need
to have values and norms that go beyond the appropriation of tangible business outcomes for themselves. This raises the question of the role played by individual moral antecedents in the entrepreneurial
process of opportunity recognition for sustainable development. To answer this question, an exploratory
empirical research design was used in which 96 would-be entrepreneurs were subjected to real-life
decision-making processes in an online environment. The participants were guided through the process of opportunity recognition for sustainable development. Furthermore, they were subjected to
several tests linked to individual moral antecedents. The mixed methods design used to analyze the
results led to the conclusion that pro-environmental behavior values and moral competencies are
important indicators of the ability to recognize opportunities for sustainable development. These results
provide useful insights about relating moral antecedents to idea generation for sustainable development
and can help researchers, higher education institutes, and sustainable entrepreneurs to further develop
the concept of sustainable entrepreneurship and its underlying processes
Contractual arrangements and food quality certifications in the Mexican avocado industry
The adoption of private quality certifications in agrifood supply chains often requires specific investments by producers which can be safeguarded by choosing specific contractual arrangements. Based on a survey data from avocado producers in Mexico, this paper aims to analyze the impact of transaction costs and relationship characteristics of the joint choice of contractual arrangements and quality certifications. Using a bivariate probit model, it shows that a producerâs decision to adopt private quality certifications is directly linked to high levels of asset specificity and price. In order to ensure the high level of specificity under the presence of low levels of price uncertainty, producers have relied on relational governance supported by the expectation of continuity in their bilateral relationships with buyers
Multi-governance choices by smallholder farmers in the pineapple supply chain in Benin: An application of transaction cost theory
The present study validates the new construct âMulti-governance choicesâ, to sharpen our understanding of how and why smallholder farmers select among alternative governance structures. Primary data were collected from a sample of 219 pineapple farmers in Southern Benin. Results from a multivariate probit model analysis showed that farmers involved in outgrowing schemes were less likely to be involved in other type of governance structure, indicating the specificity of this type of transaction arrangement in Beninese pineapple supply chain. Results also show that the specificity of the investments, transaction connectedness, market stability, institutional support and market attributes are key factors affecting the choice of governance structure. The study suggests that further research is needed into the impact of selected governance structures on pineapple quality and farmerâs income
Probing the Hofmeister Effect with Ultrafast Core Hole Spectroscopy
In the current work, X-ray emission spectra of aqueous solutions of different inorganic salts within the Hofmeister series are presented. The results reflect the direct interaction of the ions with the water molecules and therefore, reveal general properties of the salt-water interactions. Within the experimental precision a significant effect of the ions on the water structure has been observed but no ordering according to the structure maker/structure breaker concept could be mirrored in the results indicating that the Hofmeister effect-if existent-may be caused by more complex interactions
