Synthesis of novel bisphosphorylimides based on Staudinger reaction
A series of bisphosphorylimides based on the reaction sequence of Atherton-Todd and Staudinger reaction were synthesized. These bisphosphorylimides containing phosphorus in different chemical environments, while the reaction sequence is using mild conditions and moreover can be synthesized in an one-pot procedure. The molecular structures were revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography. The stability of the bisphosphorylimides against hydrolysis and thermal influences was tested which allows an initial estimation about the usage as flame retardant
Nonthermal fragmentation of C60
A theoretical study of the subpicosecond fragmentation of C60 clusters in
response to ultrafast laser pulses is presented. We simulate the laser
excitation and the consequent nonequilibrium relaxation dynamics of the
electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. The first stages of the
nonequilibrium dynamics are dominated by a coherent breathing mode followed by
the cold ejection of single C atoms, in contrast to the dimer emission which
characterizes the thermal relaxation. We also determine the nonequilibrium
damage thresholds as a function of the pulse duration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Chem. Phys. Let
Inhibition of DNA damage response at telomeres improves the detrimental phenotypes of Hutchinson–Gilford Progeria Syndrome
Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a genetic disorder characterized by premature aging features. Cells from HGPS patients express progerin, a truncated form of Lamin A, which perturbs cellular homeostasis leading to nuclear shape alterations, genome instability, heterochromatin loss, telomere dysfunction and premature entry into cellular senescence. Recently, we reported that telomere dysfunction induces the transcription of telomeric non-coding RNAs (tncRNAs) which control the DNA damage response (DDR) at dysfunctional telomeres. Here we show that progerin-induced telomere dysfunction induces the transcription of tncRNAs. Their functional inhibition by sequence-specific telomeric antisense oligonucleotides (tASOs) prevents full DDR activation and premature cellular senescence in various HGPS cell systems, including HGPS patient fibroblasts. We also show in vivo that tASO treatment significantly enhances skin homeostasis and lifespan in a transgenic HGPS mouse model. In summary, our results demonstrate an important role for telomeric DDR activation in HGPS progeroid detrimental phenotypes in vitro and in vivo
Magnetic and electronic structures of superconducting RuSrGdCuO
The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in
RuSrGdCuO was reported both from experiments (by Tallon et. al.)
and first-principles calculations (by Pickett et. al.). Here we report that our
first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW)
calculations, employing the precise crystal structure with structural
distortions (i.e., RuO rotations) determined by neutron diffraction,
demonstrate that antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru moments is energetically
favored over the previously proposed ferromagnetic ordering. Our results are
consistent with recently performed magnetic neutron diffraction experiments
(Lynn et. al). Ru states, which are responsible for the magnetism,
have only a very small interaction with Cu states, which results in a
small exchange splitting of these states. The Fermi surface, characterized by
strongly hybridized orbitals, has nesting features similar to those
in the two-dimensional high cuprate superconductors.Comment: 6 pages,6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Lines of Descent: Kuhn and Beyond
yesThomas S. Kuhn is famous both for his work on the Copernican Revolution and his ‘paradigm’ view of scientific revolutions. But Kuhn later abandoned the notion of paradigm (and related notions) in favour of a more ‘evolutionary’ view of the history of science. Kuhn’s position therefore moved closer to ‘continuity’ models of scientific progress, for instance ‘chain-of-reasoning’ models, originally championed by D. Shapere. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate around Kuhn’s new ‘developmental’ view and to evaluate these competing models with reference to some major innovations in the history of cosmology, from Copernicanism to modern cosmology. This evaluation is made possible through some unexpected overlap between Kuhn’s earlier discontinuity model and various versions of the later continuity models. It is the thesis of this paper that the ‘chain-of-reasoning’ model accounts better for the cosmological evidence than both Kuhn’s early paradigm model and his later developmental view of the history of science
The Stern-Gerlach Experiment Revisited
The Stern-Gerlach-Experiment (SGE) of 1922 is a seminal benchmark experiment
of quantum physics providing evidence for several fundamental properties of
quantum systems. Based on today's knowledge we illustrate the different
benchmark results of the SGE for the development of modern quantum physics and
chemistry.
The SGE provided the first direct experimental evidence for angular momentum
quantization in the quantum world and thus also for the existence of
directional quantization of all angular momenta in the process of measurement.
It measured for the first time a ground state property of an atom, it produced
for the first time a `spin-polarized' atomic beam, it almost revealed the
electron spin. The SGE was the first fully successful molecular beam experiment
with high momentum-resolution by beam measurements in vacuum. This technique
provided a new kinematic microscope with which inner atomic or nuclear
properties could be investigated.
The original SGE is described together with early attempts by Einstein,
Ehrenfest, Heisenberg, and others to understand directional quantization in the
SGE. Heisenberg's and Einstein's proposals of an improved multi-stage SGE are
presented. The first realization of these proposals by Stern, Phipps, Frisch
and Segr\`e is described. The set-up suggested by Einstein can be considered an
anticipation of a Rabi-apparatus. Recent theoretical work is mentioned in which
the directional quantization process and possible interference effects of the
two different spin states are investigated.
In full agreement with the results of the new quantum theory directional
quantization appears as a general and universal feature of quantum
measurements. One experimental example for such directional quantization in
scattering processes is shown. Last not least, the early history of the
`almost' discovery of the electron spin in the SGE is revisited.Comment: 50pp, 17 fig
Point defects, ferromagnetism and transport in calcium hexaboride
The formation energy and local magnetic moment of a series of point defects
in CaB are computed using a supercell approach within the generalized
gradient approximation to density functional theory. Based on these results,
speculations are made as to the influence of these defects on electrical
transport. It is found that the substitution of Ca by La does not lead to the
formation of a local moment, while a neutral B vacancy carries a moment of
2.4 Bohr magnetons, mostly distributed over the six nearest-neighbour B atoms.
A plausible mechanism for the ferromagnetic ordering of these moments is
suggested. Since the same broken B-B bonds appear on the preferred (100)
cleavage planes of the CaB structure, it is argued that internal surfaces
in polycrystals as well as external surfaces in general will make a large
contribution to the observed magnetization.Comment: Calculated defect formation energies had to be corrected, due to the
use of a wrong reference energy for the perfect crystal in the original pape
Electronic Structure and Charge Dynamics of Huesler Alloy Fe2TiSn Probed by Infrared and Optical Spectroscopy
We report on the electrodynamics of a Heusler alloy Fe2TiSn probed over four
decades in energy: from the far infrared to the ultraviolet. Our results do not
support the suggestion of Kondo-lattice behavior inferred from specific heat
measurements. Instead, we find a conventional Drude-like response of free
carriers, with two additional absorption bands centered at around 0.1 and 0.87
eV. The latter feature can be interpreted as excitations across a pseudogap, in
accord with band structure calculations.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Surface relaxation and ferromagnetism of Rh(001)
The significant discrepancy between first-principles calculations and
experimental analyses for the relaxation of the (001) surface of rhodium has
been a puzzle for some years. In this paper we present density functional
theory calculations using the local-density approximation and the generalized
gradient approximation of the exchange-correlation functional. We investigate
the thermal expansion of the surface and the possibility of surface magnetism.
The results throw light on several, hitherto overlooked, aspects of metal
surfaces. We find, that, when the free energy is considered, density-functional
theory provides results in good agreement with experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (April 28, 1996
