    A new edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Histological classification of tumours of the hypopharynx, larynx, trachea and parapharyngeal space was published in 2017. We have considered this classification regarding laryngeal neoplasms and discuss the grounds for said revision. Many of the laryngeal neoplasms described in the literature and in the previous WHO edition from 2005 have been omitted from this current revision.     The Combination of Organization and Emotion: An Immediate Free Recall Task

    Both organization (e.g., semantic-relatedness) and emotional valence have been found to lead to better memory as seen through the superior recall of semantically-related and emotionally-valenced lists. However, research suggests that these two factors may not only lack an additive effect when combined, but may result in worse recall. Based on this research, we hypothesized emotion would hinder recall of a semantically-related list by impairing the relational processing that usually benefits recall of semantically-related material. This hypothesis was supported, as it was found that emotional valence resulted in reduced recall in a semantically-related list. This finding may have important implications for fields like education and advertising, where the use of emotional stimuli within a message could cause a a person to miss its bigger picture

    The GLP-E is an initiative aimed at supporting the teaching and learning of global learning in schools in England at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. It is a ļ¬ve-year national programme of support to schools to enhance their provision of global learning. Speciļ¬cally, the GLP-E works with teachers to enhance their conļ¬dence and ability to provide whole school support to global learning across their institutions. The GLP-E has a strong emphasis on research and evaluation, in particular using research evidence to support the development of better practice in the programme.The Whole School Audit (WSA) is an online data-gathering tool that respondents in participating schools complete after registering onto the GLP-E. This paper presents ļ¬ndings from the baseline analysis of WSA submissions for schools joining the GLP-E between June 2013 and February 2014. Speciļ¬cally, the paper responds to four key questions: 1. Which schools are signing up for the GLP-E? 2. Why are schools signing up for the GLP-E? 3. What global learning activities are schools signing up to the GLP-E already involved in? 4. What are levels of global learning in schools signing up to the GLP-E

    Online identification and nonlinear control of the electrically stimulated quadriceps muscle

    A new approach for estimating nonlinear models of the electrically stimulated quadriceps muscle group under nonisometric conditions is investigated. The model can be used for designing controlled neuro-prostheses. In order to identify the muscle dynamics (stimulation pulsewidth-active knee moment relation) from discrete-time angle measurements only, a hybrid model structure is postulated for the shank-quadriceps dynamics. The model consists of a relatively well known time-invariant passive component and an uncertain time-variant active component. Rigid body dynamics, described by the Equation of Motion (EoM), and passive joint properties form the time-invariant part. The actuator, i.e. the electrically stimulated muscle group, represents the uncertain time-varying section. A recursive algorithm is outlined for identifying online the stimulated quadriceps muscle group. The algorithm requires EoM and passive joint characteristics to be known a priori. The muscle dynamics represent the product of a continuous-time nonlinear activation dynamics and a nonlinear static contraction function described by a Normalised Radial Basis Function (NRBF) network which has knee-joint angle and angular velocity as input arguments. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) approach is chosen to estimate muscle dynamics parameters and to obtain full state estimates of the shank-quadriceps dynamics simultaneously. The latter is important for implementing state feedback controllers. A nonlinear state feedback controller using the backstepping method is explicitly designed whereas the model was identified a priori using the developed identification procedure

    A unitary, strongly centralized state has characterized French political thought and practice for centuries. The Socialist Party broke from this tradition during its recent tenure in national office when it passed a comprehensive program of political decentralization. We consider these recent changes in the structure of the French state from pluralist, elitist, and ruling class perspectives, and conclude that each of these traditional conceptualizations limits our understanding of state power in various ways. We explore the utility of a refined ruling class perspective known as social capital, and suggest it offers insights into political decentralization and state structure not provided by alternative perspectives. We conclude by suggesting that social capital holds promise for application to problems of analytical and practical significance

    Although historical sources for the Early Modern development of the Maltese landscape are abundant and well-documented, these records are uncorroborated by other forms of evidence. As part of investigations of the development of a field system at Mistra Valley, Malta, a sample was taken from a waterlain layer at the base of a field-fill on the edge of the valley-floor in Mistra Valley. Pollen and other analyses were done on this layer to identify the environment and agriculture of an early stage in the field system.peer-reviewe
